+thegoldenband
Here's the summary for Week 27, running from June 27 - July 3. We logged 2575 minutes of eligible play, playing 42 games on a total of 13 systems. Top 10: 1. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 534 2. Astrosmash (Intellivision) - 440 3. AD&D: Treasure of Tarmin (Intellivision) - 182 4. Super Breakout (Atari 8-bit) - 180 5. Mario Kart 64 (N64) - 149 6. Joust (Atari 5200) - 105 7. Dr. Mario (Game Boy) - 87 8. Bust-A-Move 2 (N64) - 84 9. Pokemon Blue Version (Game Boy) - 66 10. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (N64) - 62 Pre-NES top 10: 1. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 534 2. Astrosmash (Intellivision) - 440 3. AD&D: Treasure of Tarmin (Intellivision) - 182 4. Super Breakout (Atari 8-bit) - 180 5. Joust (Atari 5200) - 105 6. Super Smash (VIC-20) - 60 7. The Sky Is Falling (VIC-20) - 45 7. Spy's Demise (C64) - 45 9. Clowns (C64) - 35 10. Kaboom (Atari 8-bit) - 30 10. Super Smash (C64) - 30 Top 10 systems: 1. Intellivision (656) 2. Atari 2600 (588) 3. N64 (360) 4. Atari 8-bit (210) 5. Game Boy (153) 6. VIC-20 (130) 7. Atari 5200 (125) 8. C64 (120) 9. SNES (92) 10. NES/Famicom (90) Kaboom returns to the pinnacle once again, topping both individual charts. It's closely followed by Astrosmash for Intellivision, however, and George Plimpton's favorite system ultimately edges out the VCS, making a rare appearance in the top spot on the system charts. In fact the top 4 spots of the pre-NES charts look identical to the top 4 overall. A strong showing for pre-crash systems, in sharp contrast to last week! +thegoldenband
Since we're at the halfway point for the year, I thought I'd post a mid-year update. +thegoldenband
My times for Monday - Friday: Atari 2600: Bugs - 32 min. Casino - 11 min. Frogger - 3 min. Medieval Mayhem - 10 min. NES: Tetris - 5 min. Genesis: Art of Fighting - 33 min. Pinocchio - 67 min. Star Odyssey - 820 min. Whip Rush - 6 min. SNES: Spiderman/X-Men: Arcade's Revenge - 3 min. PlayStation: Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge - 65 min. Game Boy Color: Game & Watch Gallery 2 - 26 min. I beat Pinocchio on Hard and thought I ought to try one of my Genesis RPGs, so I fired up Star Odyssey, the latest release from Super Fighter Team (the same folks who put out Beggar Prince and Legend of Wukong), and quickly got sucked in. I'm enjoying it so far, though at the moment I'm stuck on an annoying puzzle/boss I have to walk for 10 minutes in order to reach. I think I'm close to the end of the game. Otherwise I tried out a few games, got a little ways into Frogger 2 for PlayStation, and also managed a new personal best of 457 pts. on Bugs for Atari 2600. Can I roll the score someday? Perhaps -- the standing world record is in the 800s, but that's on the more difficult "B" setting.

Kurt_Woloch
Here are my times for this past week (July 4th through 10th)... Again, no gaming time eligible for the Top 10. I just played a bit of Pizza Connection Online (22 minutes in total), but the game kept on crashing, so I quickly gave up. Sorry, no classic games this week... just some days of swimming and about 160 minutes of riding time on my Peg Perego Corral T-Rex quad (which isn't eligible either). +thegoldenband
Times for the weekend: Genesis: Art of Fighting (Japanese version) - 36 min. Art of Fighting (U.S. version) - 185 min. Star Odyssey - 229 min. Last night, I made it to the boss in Star Odyssey. I lost a few times, and it was getting late, so I figured I'd do some grinding in the morning, and finish the game off. This morning, I start the game up, and one of my character's names is corrupted with graphic tiles and Japanese characters. I reset the game, make a safety copy of the savefile in a different slot, and try again. Nope, still corrupted. I decided to power down, pull the cartridge out, put it back in, and power back up. Worst case scenario, I figured I could resume from a third, older savefile I had. So I power back up. And...all my savefiles are gone. Including the third, older file. Goodbye to 17+ hours' work. Who knows whether it's a bug, or just "one of those things", but I don't know when I'll want to play Star Odyssey again. Surprisingly, I wasn't that angry or surprised, maybe because the name corruption warned me that something was up. But why a problem in one save slot should affect all three, I have no idea. I emailed Super Fighter Team, and Brandon had me check the battery, which was securely in place as far as I could tell (though the + symbol wasn't quite lined up with the corresponding terminal -- don't know if it needs to be). We'll see if he's able to shed any further light on the issue. As you might imagine, the idea of beating people up sounded remarkably appealing after all that, so I played Art of Fighting for a while. First I played the Japanese version, which is quite a bit easier and saner than the US release, and beat it on Hard with little difficulty. Then I worked on the American version, and got to the final boss a few times on Normal, but couldn't beat him. There are only two continues in the US release, vs. unlimited in the SNES port and Neo Geo original. I also spent some time researching the moves, since they're different from the Neo Geo and SNES versions, and found out that contrary to popular belief, there are desperation moves in this version of the game -- they're just not documented in the manual. If anyone's curious, the move is quarter circle toward + kick, followed by punch. (This has to be performed on A and X if you use the fourth, SFII-esque control type.) TheGameCollector
NES: Ice Hockey - 17 minutes Genesis: Championship Pro-Am - 30 minutes SNES: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - 53 minutes Nintendo 64: Diddy Kong Racing - 360 minutes Goldeneye 007 - 160 minutes Game Boy Color: Dragon Warrior I & II - 78 minutes Super Mario Bros. Deluxe - 49 minutes Most of my classic gaming this week was on Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color. I played some Game Boy Advance and Playstation 2 as well, but those systems don't count. The physics in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe are way off. It took me twice as long as usual to play just the normal mode levels all the way through and I had a hard time. +thegoldenband
Here's the summary for Week 28, running from July 4-10. We logged 4121 minutes of eligible play, playing 50 games on a total of 12 systems. Top 10: 1. Star Odyssey (Genesis) - 1049 2. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 463 3. Astrosmash (Intellivision) - 375 4. Diddy Kong Racing (N64) - 360 5. Art of Fighting [uS version] (Genesis) - 218 6. GoldenEye 007 (N64) - 160 7. Asteroids (Atari 2600) - 110 8. Dragon Warrior I & II (Game Boy Color) - 78 9. Battlezone (Atari 2600) - 75 9. AD&D: Treasure of Tarmin (Intellivision) - 75 Pre-NES top 10: 1. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 463 2. Astrosmash (Intellivision) - 375 3. Asteroids (Atari 2600) - 110 4. Yars' Revenge (Atari 2600) - 45 10. Bugs (Atari 2600) - 32 Top 10 systems: 1. Genesis (1426) 2. Atari 2600 (824) 3. Intellivision (585) 4. N64 (520) 5. NES/Famicom (207) 6. Game Boy Color (153) 7. Game Boy (115) 8. Atari 7800 (110) 9. PlayStation (65) 10. SNES (56) The Genesis takes the top spot on the system and individual charts, thanks to the newly released RPG Star Odyssey (unfortunate savegame wipe-itude notwithstanding). The #2 spot on both charts, as well as the #1 spot on the pre-NES charts, goes to that perennial combination: the Atari 2600, and Kaboom. And right behind at #3 (#2 on the pre-NES charts) comes the Intellivision, with Astrosmash in tow, across the board.
+thegoldenband
My gameplay for Monday - Friday: Intellivision: AD&D: Cloudy Mountain - 31 min. Astrosmash - 11 min. Thunder Castle - 11 min. Sega SG-1000: Champion Tennis - 15 min. Genesis: Art of Fighting (U) - 161 min. Golden Axe III - 58 min. Granada - 68 min. The Smurfs - 106 min. SNES: Firepower 2000 - 33 min. Brunswick World Tournament Champions - 17 min. Sunset Riders - 21 min. Neo Geo: Art of Fighting - 25 min. After many attempts, I beat the US release of Art of Fighting for Genesis on Hard, though on the one-round-per-match setting. My inquiries into the game led me to set up a Neo Geo emulator and play the original. Despite the graphic and sonic superiority of the Neo Geo, I think I actually prefer the Genny version, simply because it controls so much better! (I don't think this is an emulation issue -- the Video Game Critic mentions having major issues with the controls, and the SNES version is the exact same way.) I also beat Granada on Hard without much difficulty, but between the short health bar and limited time, Mania looks near-impossible! I think I may wait a bit before I take that on, so I started playing through The Smurfs for Genesis, which is shaping up to be another very good platformer in the franchise. Meanwhile my girlfriend and I made another attempt on Golden Axe III, ending with "AND YOU DEAD", as well as trying out a few SNES titles (and getting our butts kicked by Firepower 2000). On the pre-NES front, I played a few matches of Champion Tennis, a fairly terrible SG-1000 title. All matches are one set, and I lost the first two 6-0 before scraping 6-2 in my third attempt. Some aspects of the control scheme are eluding me, I think, and it'd be nice to see an English-language manual.

Contrary to popular disbelief, I did play some classic games this week, but not for long... Creativision: Auto Chase - 13 min. Locomotive - 4 min. Mouse Puzzle - 17 min. Auto Chase is an adaptation of "Rally X", with actually better graphics, but a much more monotone maze which only seems to consist of a 8x9 grid and then repeats. The boundaries are done by setting bushes into what would otherwise be open roads. The graphics are actually pretty nice, and there are more background objects than in "Rally X", but the game is also slower, and the music sometimes sounds cacophonic. Locomotive is a bad clone of Burger Time where you have to complete a locomotive and wagons instead of burgers, and are chased by technical things which you have to spray with grease (instead of pepper) so that they disappear (instead of being stunned). Mouse Puzzle is a variation on Locomotion (and, to a lesser extent, Happy Trails for the Intellivision). The difference is that you have a mouse in the maze instead of the locomotive, and there are (again) better graphics, but some game elements taken away like the bonus counters, the additional enemies (there is always only one enemy) and the slow magnification of the maze (which seems to always stay at the starting size). Other than that, I had about 160 minutes of riding time on my Peg Perego Corral T-Rex, and about 195 minutes of swimming time, so I didn't really need more gaming time this week. +thegoldenband
I just wanted to post a quick heads-up that the tracker totals will probably be a couple days late this week, because I just had a hard disk crash. Fortunately I have a backup from a few weeks ago, but I did lose a few things, including the last few weeks of database entries (which will be easy enough to reconstruct if necessary). Once my replacement HD shows up, I'm going to try the hard-disk-in-the-freezer trick and see what can be done!

+thegoldenband
Here's the summary for Week 29, running from July 11-17. We logged 2058 minutes of eligible play, playing 52 games on a total of 14 systems. Top 10: 1. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 367 2. Dragon Warrior I & II (Game Boy Color) - 316 3. Art of Fighting (U) (Genesis) - 161 4. Galaxian (Atari 5200) - 150 5. Transbot (Sega Master System) - 120 6. Smurfs, The (Genesis) - 106 7. Toy Commander (Dreamcast) - 70 8. Granada (Genesis) - 68 9. Pole Position II (Atari 7800) - 60 10. Golden Axe 3 (Genesis) - 58 Pre-NES top 10: 1. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 367 2. Galaxian (Atari 5200) - 150 3. Pole Position II (Atari 7800) - 60 4. AD&D: Cloudy Mountain (Intellivision) - 31 5. Megamania (Atari 5200) - 30 5. Robot Tank (Atari 2600) - 30 5. Space Invaders (Atari 5200) - 30 8. Pac-Man (Atari 2600) - 20 9. Mouse Puzzle (Creativision) - 17 10. Champion Tennis (SG-1000) - 15 Top 10 systems: 1. Atari 2600 (438) 2. Genesis (402) 3. Game Boy Color (316) 4. Atari 5200 (210) 5. Dreamcast (142) 6. Atari 7800 (120) 7. Sega Master System (120) 8. NES/Famicom (86) 9. SNES (71) 10. Intellivision (53) Kaboom regains the summit on both the overall and individual charts, and the VCS takes the top spot on the system charts. In other news, the Creativision makes its very first appearance to date (unless it showed up sometime in 2009?), even taking a spot in a pre-NES top 10 that's otherwise dominated by Atari titles. BTW I wasn't able to recover my crashed hard drive, but I've restored from a three-week-old backup, and have re-entered the lost information from Weeks 26-28 (while listening to Steely Dan and Jefferson Airplane!). +thegoldenband
Here's my own gameplay for Monday - Wednesday of this week: Arcade: Major Havoc - 5 min. Marble Madness - 4 min. SG-1000: Ninja Princess - 44 min. Neo Geo CD: Blue's Journey - 10 min. Crossed Swords - 6 min. Legend of Success Joe - 18 min. Neo Mr. Do - 8 min. Dreamcast: Toy Commander - 75 min. All of these were played via emulation (or not-emulation!) on the Dreamcast. The SG-1000 looks great, the arcade games were mostly unplayable except for the two I listed, and the Neo Geo CD stuff seemed to work well, except for Neo Mr. Do which had messed-up music. Legend of Success Joe is a truly terrible game, especially given the console's normally high standards!
