TheGameCollector #527 Posted August 16, 2011 Despite a certain lack of system diversity this week, we had a rare visit from the Bally Astrocade! It might be the first -- it's certainly the first one in my spreadsheet, though I don't have stats for 2009 yet. It's probably because not a lot of people have the system. Expect to see more of it pretty soon. I finally found Muncher for what I consider an acceptable price after looking for it for the past 3 years. I can't wait till it gets here. +thegoldenband #530 Posted August 19, 2011 My times for Monday - Thursday: Intellivision: Dig Dug - 3 min. Spiker Super Pro Volleyball - 6 min. Sega Genesis: Thunder Force II - 106 min. Sega CD: Tomcat Alley - 255 min. Beat Tomcat Alley in two days on both Easy and Hard. Gotta love the FMV. Before that, I spent some time chipping away at Thunder Force II on Normal, but wasn't able to get past the second half of Stage 4 (where the Normal game ends, since you have to play on Hard to access Stage 5). The game often gets knocked for its overhead levels, but though they can be confusing, I actually prefer them to the sidescrolling levels. Very weird interface in this game -- you have to hold A and press Start to access the options menu. Even less intuitively, you have to press A to continue: if you press Start, it's game over! I also played around with two Intellivision games I don't yet own, via emulation. The famous Spiker seemed like it'd be worth learning to play, but I was a little disappointed by Dig Dug, which somehow felt anemic compared to other versions I've tried.

Kurt_Woloch #536 Posted August 21, 2011 Here are my times for this past week (August 15th through 21st)... Sorry, there are no times this week. There was nice weather all week long, and I've been swimming every day, so no time for gaming. Total gaming time: 0 minutes (0 minutes per day) Total riding time on my Peg Perego Corral T-Rex: about 35-40 minutes Total swimming time: about 300 minutes (43 minutes per day)
JayWI #537 Posted August 22, 2011 Genesis Tecmo Super Bowl 3 - 330 minutes Intellivision AD&D Cloudy Mountain - 35 minutes Dracula - 20 minutes Lock 'n' Chase - 20 minutes Colecovision Donkey Kong - 20 minutes Frogger - 35 minutes Mousetrap - 25 minutes Just about finished with Tecmo Super Bowl. Have 2 more games to go for another undefeated season. There's no challenge in this game except for the game within a game, like throwing 100 TD passes, or going a whole season with less than 100 points against or trying to score 1000 points. Did Cloudy Mountain on the hardest level and beat it on the second try. In fact got all the way through without losing a life. Love the Colecovision on my big TV with the composite mod done. The picture is incredible. I'll have to expand my library a bit so I can try out some other games.
+thegoldenband #538 Posted August 22, 2011 My times for Friday - Sunday: Atari 2600: Basketball - 4 min. BeeBall - 5 min. Dragonfire - 8 min. Entombed - 7 min. Fall Down - 7 min. Go Fish - 14 min. Missile Command - 5 min. Sky Diver - 8 min. Apple II: History Mystery - 70 min. Sega CD: Burning Fists: Force Striker - 3 min. Fatal Fury Special - 4 min. Mickey Mania - 2 min. Mortal Kombat CD - 10 min. Radical Rex - 45 min. Revenge of the Ninja - 25 min. Sol-Feace - 85 min. Played through History Mystery, an old Apple II educational game that was discussed, and eventually identified, here. I wonder how many years it's been since someone's beaten it? It's just a little bit too long to complete during a grade school recess. Otherwise my girlfriend and I played a bunch of two-player VCS games (I used Missile Command for joystick testing), and I spent some more time with the Sega CD. I played through all 18 levels of Revenge of the Ninja on Easy on my first try -- indeed, my first time ever playing the game -- but I suspect Hard will require a lot of memorization, perhaps more than I'm willing to undertake. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat CD seems rather dismal, Radical Rex surprisingly average, and Fatal Fury Special unexpectedly familiar (given the inclusion of Ryo Sakazaki from Art of Fighting). And then there's my old enemy, Sol-Feace...I made it to the last level on Mania, but no joy. Someday I will bring you to your knees, Sol-Feace, as I did to your lesser (if nobler) cousin Sol-Deace.
TheGameCollector #539 Posted August 22, 2011 Playstation: Alundra - 140 minutes Nintendo 64: Super Smash Bros. - 112 minutes Bally Astrocade: Muncher - 49 minutes In Alundra, I've made it to the save point in the desert temple. In Super Smash Bros. I've unlocked everything except for item switch. My time for Muncher spans three sessions. I just got the game in the mail this week so I thought I'd put some time into such a rare game since I was lucky to get it.It's a good Pac-Man clone, but what makes it hard is the system's controller itself. It's kind of hard to switch from up to left for example because of the way the grooves in the plastic are. I spent most of the week playing Suikoden III for PS2 and Super Smash Bros. Melee for Gamecube

+thegoldenband #541 Posted August 23, 2011 Here's the summary for Week 34, running from August 15-21. We logged 3613 minutes of eligible play, playing 47 games on a total of 13 systems. Top 10: 1. Monopoly (NES/Famicom) - 485 2. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 345 3. AD&D: Treasure of Tarmin (Intellivision) - 330 3. Tecmo Super Bowl 3 (Genesis) - 330 5. Tomcat Alley (Sega CD) - 255 6. Where's Waldo? (NES/Famicom) - 225 7. Alundra (PlayStation) - 140 8. Auto Racing (Intellivision) - 135 9. Super Breakout (Atari 5200) - 120 10. Super Smash Bros. (N64) - 112 Pre-NES top 10: 1. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 345 2. AD&D: Treasure of Tarmin (Intellivision) - 330 3. Auto Racing (Intellivision) - 135 4. Super Breakout (Atari 5200) - 120 5. Astrosmash (Intellivision) - 90 6. Threshold (C64) - 80 7. History Mystery (Apple II) - 70 8. Toyshop Trouble (Atari 2600) - 60 9. Muncher (Bally Astrocade) - 49 10. Threshold (VIC-20) - 45 Top 10 systems: 1. NES/Famicom (850) 2. Intellivision (674) 3. Atari 2600 (513) 4. Genesis (436) 5. Sega CD (429) 6. PlayStation (140) 7. Atari 5200 (120) 8. N64 (112) 9. C64 (95) 10. ColecoVision (80) The NES unexpectedly "monopolizes" the top spot, while Kaboom holds sway with the 25-and-over crowd. Soon it'll be old enough to run for President! BTW, Sol-Feace for Sega CD reached the 1000-minute club this week. Full updates are still pending, but some PlayStation RPGs have obviously joined in recent weeks as well.
+thegoldenband #542 Posted August 27, 2011 My times for Monday - Friday: Atari 2600: Phantom Tank - 3 min. Survival Run (Data Age proto) - 3 min. Intellivision: NBA Basketball - 36 min. Shark! Shark! - 56 min. NES: Hello Kitty World - 3 min. Mottomo Abunai Deka (The Most Dangerous Detectives) - 6 min. Star Wars (J) - 7 min. Ys III: Wanderers From Ys - 5 min. Sega CD: Fatal Fury Special - 41 min. Sol-Feace - 36 min. Star Wars Chess - 27 min. Game Boy Color: Game & Watch Gallery 2 - 7 min. Finally beat Sol-Feace on Mania! I also defeated Star Wars Chess on the highest difficulty setting with the Black pieces, and played through Fatal Fury Special on the easiest difficulty setting (Beginner) without losing a round. Also played a bunch of translated NES ROMs while my Internet was out. That Japanese Star Wars is a bizarre abomination -- "Scorpion Darth Vader"? But Hello Kitty World (released stateside as Balloon Kid) is great!

Kurt_Woloch #545 Posted August 28, 2011 Here are my times for this past week (August 22th through 28th)... The heatwave is over, so I got some time for gaming again... Arcade: Kicker - 89 min. Colecovision: Gorf - 5 min. Steamroller - 23 min. Total gaming time: 117 min. Total swimming time: about 400 min. Total riding time on my Peg-Perego Corral T-Rex: about 40 min. "Kicker" is basically the same as "Shao-Lin's road", which was another name for the game, and the name for its home computer conversions back in the 80's. On easy setting and 7 lives, I made it through all of the 5 screens, after which the 1st screen reappears, but with a bird dropping additional obstacles you have to avoid (similar to the skulls in Popeye from the 2nd round on). "Gorf" is an, well, approximation of the arcade game with a more consistent speed (the speed in the arcade, especially that of the enemies, is very inconsistent!). And I think I've written enough about "Steamroller" which I tried again, but only for 1 or 2 games.
JayWI #546 Posted August 29, 2011 Intellivision AD&D Treasure of Tarmin - 25 minutes Centipede - 10 minutes Lock 'n' Chase - 20 minutes Popeye - 20 minutes Thin Ice - 15 minutes Tron Deadly Discs - 20 minutes World Championship Baseball - 40 minutes SNES Donkey Kong Country - 20 minutes Super Punch Out - 30 minutes TurboGrafx 16 Blazing Lazers - 20 minutes Ninja Spirit - 15 minutes Finally got my new game room completely set up. The only system I haven't touched yet is N64. Perhaps next week. Really got crazy with the Intellivision this week. I actually played a full 9 inning game on the hardest skill level in World Championship Baseball. After a couple innings I had it down again and ended up winning 8-2. It's very easy to steal 2nd, 3rd and home after getting a single. As long as it's time right and the pitcher throws a slow pitch you'll have the base no problem. Tarmin I never sat down and learned how to play. I tried the easiest skill level and made it to the last level before being defeated by what I believe was a giant. Still don't know how to use all the loot so I'll need to read up on that. Tron Deadly Discs was a game I picked up at little used game store for 50 cents. Once I gave it a good cleaning it ran perfectly. I scored just over 50k before being eliminated. A pretty fun game that will probably stay in rotation for a while. The TG-16 games Blazing Lazers and Ninja Spirit are two of my favorites on the system so far. Blazing Lazers is a good top down space shooter. Pick up power ups for your ship and the game is almost to easy. However if you do get whacked later on it's damn near impossible. The same for Ninja Spirit. Get all sorts of power ups like having 3 guys on the screen at one with a sword that emits a big explosion and hits anything within a few steps of you. Once again if you go down you lose all your power ups and the game is very hard.
disjaukifa #547 Posted August 29, 2011 (edited) Atari 2600 Tempest - 5 minutes <-- really rough game Berzerk - 45 minutes On my last game I got the highest score I've ever gotten, granted its on Difficulty B so I don't have to worry about evil Otto, I got 10,700, consider I just played this game for the first time this past week and when I was playing it earlier this week I was only averaging 3000 ~ 4200, I was very happy with 10,700! TheGameCollector #548 Posted August 29, 2011 Playstation: Alundra - 496 minutes I only had 4 chances to sit and play video games this week and it all went into Alundra. It's quite a long game. I'm in Meia's dream now.
+thegoldenband #549 Posted August 29, 2011 (edited) Times from the weekend: Atari 2600: Starmaster - 3 min. Game Boy: Bart Simpson's Escape From Camp Deadly - 138 min. Genesis: Weaponlord - 3 min. Sega CD: Fatal Fury Special - 7 min. Dreamcast: Worms World Party - 44 min. Wacky Races - 20 min. Beat Bart Simpson's Escape From Camp Deadly while the power was out, sitting by the screen door to catch the light from outside, in the aftermath of the storm. I've posted some thoughts on the game here. It's interesting how having fewer options, i.e. a power outage, helps you to focus. Would I have gone back for a second, third, fourth consecutive attempt on the game if I could've just fired up the Atari instead? Probably not! +thegoldenband #550 Posted August 29, 2011 (edited) Here's the summary for Week 35, running from August 22-28. We logged 2008 minutes of eligible play, playing 37 games on a total of 13 systems. Top 10: 1. Alundra (PlayStation) - 496 2. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 380 3. Berzerk (Atari 2600) - 225 4. Bart Simpson's Escape from Camp Deadly (Game Boy) - 138 5. SteamRoller (ColecoVision) - 23 10. Lock 'n' Chase (Intellivision) - 20 10. Popeye (Intellivision) - 20 10. Tron: Deadly Discs (Intellivision) - 20 (I've counted Shao-Lin's Road, which came out in 1985, in the pre-NES category. Since there's a three-way tie for 10th place, the overall standings wouldn't much change if it were removed.) Top 10 systems: 1. Atari 2600 (679) 2. PlayStation (496) 3. Intellivision (242) 4. Game Boy (138) 5. Sega CD (111) 6. Arcade (89) 7. NES/Famicom (66) 8. Dreamcast (64) 9. SNES (50) 10. Turbografx-16 (35) PlayStation title Alundra takes the top spot on the individual game charts, but the system itself is beaten out a loose coalition of Atari 2600 titles which capture the #1 spot for the VCS.
