Kurt_Woloch #556 Posted September 4, 2011 Here are my times for this past week (August 29th through September 4th): Arcade: Mr. TNT - 63 min. Colecovision: SteamRoller - 32 min. Most of the week, there was still nice weather here, but I got some gaming in on two days where our swimming session unexpectedly was ended by rain... there was another short session of SteamRoller (containing two games), and on the other day, I actually was going to play SteamRoller again, but then the Windows wallpaper on my PC (an Amsler net) reminded me of a game that initially looks much like an Amsler net, Mr. TNT. I've extensively played it on the C-64 back in the day, and now I tried the arcade original. The game itself is pretty good and fluid, but graphics and sound aren't too well for a 1983 game. From the specs I figure that this actually runs on Pac-Man hardware, which was done in 1980, and it utilizes it in fact even worse than Pac-Man itself. There only seems to be a single 4-color scheme for the whole background graphics where, in fact, most of the tiles are monochrome although 4 colors per tile would be allowed, and the game seems to use the same color PROM as Pac-Man, which means the same color combinations for background and sprites. Also it seems they didn't quite figure out all of the features of Namco's sound chip... there's only monophonic music even though the chip has 2 voices, and all sounds use the same waveform, although different waveforms are selectable. This reminds me of the Amiga version of Marble Madness by EA, which also only uses one single sample for all sounds... actually, that sample (guitar) sounds similar to the waveform used in Mr. TNT. It also occured to me that Mr. TNT scores rather generously... you typically make about 100,000 points per minute where you make only 10,000 in Pac Man, and extra lives are generously awarded every 75,000 points, but only up to the 300,000 mark, after which no more extra lives get awarded. Started out the week on an Intellivision kick. Really played a lot of Cloudy Mountain on the hardest level. Only wiped on one game most of the other I finished with 2 or all of my lives. I really enjoy trying to find the shortest route and going in the final mountain with the minimum amount of arrows and hope I only find the winged dragons. Spent a bit of time playing Tron Deadly Discs. I get to about 60k and then the computer kicks my butt. I have decided I must add Q*Bert to my Intellivision collection. I played the arcade, 2600 and NES versions and loved 'em all. In fact I think I'll try to find a copy of Q*Bert for every system I currently own. I know Battle Toads is an internet meme, which I admit I don't fully understand, so I had to try the game out. Pretty decent beat 'em up. Now how do I ask clerks if they have Battle Toads without them thinking I'm just trollin'? Maybe I'll stick to ebay for that one. I got 2600 Pac-man to glitch out. I popped the game in and powered on the console and immediately heard the Pac-man dying sound. Then I started with 3000 points and three lives. No idea how it happened or if I could repro it. +thegoldenband #562 Posted September 5, 2011 (edited) My times for the week: Atari 2600: Journey Escape - 5 min. Intellivision: Burgertime - 30 min. Donkey Kong - 3 min. Donkey Kong Arcade - 25 min. Atari 7800: Asteroids - 3 min. Ballblazer - 6 min. Mario Bros. - 5 min. Title Match Pro Wrestling - 4 min. Tower Toppler - 8 min. Genesis: Bonanza Bros. - 3 min. Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls - 3 min. Final Zone - 21 min. Lotus Turbo Challenge - 3 min. Primal Rage - 32 min. Shadow of the Beast - 370 min. Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition - 3 min. Thunder Force II - 30 min. Virtua Racing - 5 min. Beat two Genesis games this week, Shadow of the Beast and Thunder Force II (on Hard/5 Lives). I'd never really played Shadow of the Beast before this week, but I quite liked it; despite its reputation for brutal difficulty (and for being a flawed port that runs too fast), it's actually very fun once you get the hang of it, and wasn't too fast for me at all. I was less keen on Thunder Force II, though, which has some design flaws that keep it from being more than OK. I also tried to get into Final Zone, with no luck -- the choppy animation and erratic framerate are hard to overlook -- and played through Primal Rage on a higher, but still low, difficulty level (5). On the pre-NES front, I spent some time trying out the new Donkey Kong Arcade homebrew -- good port with some cool additions -- and I joined the 7800 club at last when my power adapter arrived this week. I don't have a two-button controller so I can't play some of the games, but my girlfriend and I had a fun match of Ballblazer, and she liked Tower Toppler too. Asteroids was a bust, though, at least in competitive mode. Edited September 5, 2011 by thegoldenband

I like hearing about things that I may never have otherwise, or be reminded of neglected items. Spent allot of time with Super Tempo on Saturn over the past week. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vlSCTQXiRQ Great game. Some levels require Japanese reading skills, but you can blunder through. No freaking Save, so I've had to leave my Saturn on. AX

You don't have to stopwatch it -- estimates are OK if exact numbers aren't available. What should I put down as a ballpark for Super Tempo -- three hours? Four?
