Here are my times for this past week:

Arcade:

Mr. Do's Castle - 93 min. in 2 sessions

Atari 2600:

Mr. Do's Castle - 23 min.

As you can see, I only played one game in 2 versions, actually inspired by disjaukifa playing it on the Atari 2600 first. But I played the arcade version first. Actually, this game has much in common with the later game "Rod land" by Jaleco:

- Both games are platformers where you can climb letters, but not jump.

- In both games, some ladders can be moved. In Mr. Do's Castle, you have the diagonal ladders which can be moved left or right, while in Rod Land you have one custom ladder you can spawn nearly anywhere you are.

- In both games you can end the level in multiple ways, among them clearing all the enemies (this element is also common with the original Mr. Do!).

- Both games also retain the "EXTRA" system for gaining extra lives which started with Mr. Do!, and the enemies turn into letters "E" through "A" which you have to kill to get the corresponding letter.

- The music, in places, is also similar between the two games.

The Atari 2600 is not as severely watered down as earlier Coleco games are... in fact, most of the game elements in the arcade have been preserved here, just minor adjustments had to be made to adapt to the 2600 graphics and memory, such as a lower count of cherries, of course less colorful graphics and the fact that player and enemies are covered by the scanlines where the cherries get displayed, even if there's nothing to cover them. Even the music is as good as it can be on the 2600. The only thing that could be improved is the steering... you have to stand in a pretty exact spot in order to be able to hit the cherries and other things with your hammer, and it's not possible to push back the enemies with your hammer as it is in the first levels of the arcade original. These details make the game rather frustrating, because the arcade original is much more forgiving in this respect.

My times for the week:

Intellivision:

Burgertime - 22 min.

Sega Master System:

Super Boy I - 34 min.

Genesis:

Shadow Blasters - 7 min.

The Smurfs - 463 min.

Streets of Rage - 64 min.

Game Boy:

Double Dragon - 7 min.

Nemesis - 4 min.

Beat The Smurfs on Easy, Medium, and Hard. As I wrote elsewhere, it's a tricky platformer that's somewhat similar to the Master System game I beat earlier this year. My girlfriend and I also beat Streets of Rage on Easy, which was good fun -- not sure why we hadn't touched that game in ages, but we enjoyed it thoroughly.

Also spent some time playing the newly-dumped Super Boy I, an unlicensed Korean clone of Super Mario Bros. that I think was originally made for MSX. Naturally, it's dreadful: horrible controls, choppy scrolling, botched music, the whole nine yards. Its biggest claim to fame is that, instead of saying "THANK YOU MARIO! BUT OUR PRINCESS IS IN ANOTHER CASTLE!" at the end of every world, it just says "SORRY NOTHING". Which is awesome.

Here's the summary for Week 37, running from September 5-11. We logged 3493 minutes of eligible play, playing 45 games on a total of 13 systems.

Top 10:

1. Berzerk (Atari 2600) - 475

2. The Smurfs (Genesis) - 463

3. Mr. Do's Castle (Atari 2600) - 383

4. Burgertime (Intellivision) - 372

5. Super Tempo (Sega Saturn) - 240*

6. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 208

7. Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (Sega Master System) - 180

8. Final Fantasy (NES/Famicom) - 159

9. Donkey Kong Country (SNES) - 110

10. Mr. Do's Castle (Arcade) - 93

*estimated time; if removed, #11 would be Pole Position (Atari 5200) with 75 minutes

Pre-NES top 10:

1. Berzerk (Atari 2600) - 475

2. Mr. Do's Castle (Atari 2600) - 383

3. Burgertime (Intellivision) - 372

4. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 208

5. Mr. Do's Castle (Arcade) - 93

6. Pole Position (Atari 5200) - 75

7. Solar Storm (Atari 2600) - 70

8. L.E.M. (Atari 2600) - 50

9. King of the Mountain (Intellivision) - 45

10. Lock 'n' Chase (Intellivision) - 40

Top 10 systems:

1. Atari 2600 (1352)

2. Genesis (534)

3. Intellivision (487)

4. Sega Master System (319)

5. Sega Saturn (240)*

6. NES/Famicom (159)

7. SNES (110)

8. Arcade (93)

9. Atari 5200 (85)

10. N64 (40)

*estimated; #11 is a tie between Atari 7800 and Atari 8-bit, which both had 30 minutes

The plot for Week 37 looks a lot like Week 36, with the Atari 2600 racking up more minutes on the system charts than its nearest three competitors combined. However, flagship title Berzerk just barely retains the top spot after withstanding a tough challenge from a band of blue collectivists. Two places down, a guy who deals in wholesale cherries just edges out a guy who deals in prepared meat products.

I don't think I can always say how long, but it may be fun to try and participate in this thread more.

Hey, that'd be great! You don't have to stopwatch it -- estimates are OK if exact numbers aren't available.

What should I put down as a ballpark for Super Tempo -- three hours? Four?

At least four on Tempo.

Played a little (15min) Sonic 1 last night.

A little Magnetica and Peggle.

Here are my times for this past week (September 12th through 18th)...

sorry, no gaming this week. It was the last week where it was warm enough to go swimming (by now, the Old Danube is already pretty cold), so we went swimming another 4 times. Then I've been at the TI-99 meeting, but there was no TI-99 there, so no chance of gaming either. Lastly, yesterday I've been to the Robotour 2011, a competition of autonomous vehicles which tried to conquer the Türkenschanzpark in Vienna in search of a set goal... but none of the vehicles made it without anything going wrong such as accidentally going off road, the batteries going dead or other things. I think Google does way better than this...

Total gaming time... none

Total swimming time... about 120 minutes

Total riding time on the Peg-Perego Corral T-Rex... about 35 minutes

My times for the week:

Atari 2600:

X-Man - 6 min.

Intellivision:

Blockade Runner - 12 min.

Lock 'N' Chase - 139 min.

NHL Hockey - 38 min.

Reversi - 29 min.

Sega Master System:

Super Boy I - 70 min.

MSX:

Super Boy III - 25 min.

Game Boy:

Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle - 6 min.

Double Dragon - 35 min.

Qix - 9 min.

Genesis:

Sorcerer's Kingdom - 674 min.

Sunset Riders - 24 min.

Taz-Mania - 36 min.

Beat Sorcerer's Kingdom and Super Boy I, both of which I've described elsewhere.

On the Intellivision front, I tried unsuccessfully to get the hang of Lock 'N' Chase for the HSC; played a game of NHL Hockey with my girlfriend, for the sake of trying something new; and made another failed attempt to make any sense of Blockade Runner.

I also beat the computer in Reversi on the middle skill level (#2) on the 8x8 board, though I'm not sure if I should count the victory as, towards the end of the game, I started getting spectacularly bizarre glitches coming from the sound hardware...all kinds of waves and washes of sound, some of which were sort of cool. No idea what happened there, but that Reversi cart is dodgy at best, and is destined for the giveaway thread, I think -- fortunately I have a spare.

The SMS emulators available to me won't play Super Boy III, but as is the case with several other Korean unlicensed games, the ROM loads up just fine on the MSX. It's a somewhat better game than Super Boy I, but longer and more taxing. I'm not sure if I have the stamina to beat this one fair and square, but perhaps I'll try.

Finally, I had my weekly dose of frustration via two games. First, Double Dragon for Game Boy, which helped me while away the minutes at the laundromat today. It seemed very promising at first, but the gameplay dynamics are all wrong, leading to many cheap shots from Abobo et al. It's much less fun than the NES version.

Then I gave Taz-Mania a whirl (no pun intended), and was not impressed at all -- choppy frame rate, astonishingly horrible music, and that minecart level is a textbook example of why most minecart levels are garbage. The game has a bad reputation, and I can see why!

NES/Famicom:

Final Fantasy - 238 minutes

Final Fantasy II - 243 minutes

In Final Fantasy 1 I am at the ending and just have to level grind for forever to gain enough levels to beat the last boss.

I met my "get to final dungeon" requirement for starting another RPG so:

In Final Fantasy 2 I have acquired the silver from the cave above the waterfall and trained my characters in various skills. Haven't switched MingWu for Josef yet and there's still a lot of work to do. After seeing how the bare handed fighting of my Black belt surpassed even the attack power of my well equipped Fighter in FF1, I think I should take time to train my 3 main characters in unarmed combat in FF2.

1. Sorcerer's Kingdom (Genesis) - 674

2. Berzerk (Atari 2600) - 475

7. Reversi (Intellivision) - 29

8. Frantic (Atari 2600) - 20

8. L.E.M. (Atari 2600) - 20

10. Galaxian (Atari 2600) - 15

Top 10 systems:

Not enough entries for a top 10. The Atari 2600 would be #1 with 950 minutes, followed by the Sega Genesis at #2 with 749 minutes.

A fairly light week, in which Genesis RPG Sorcerer's Kingdom hops to the top of the charts, while recent contender Berzerk and perennial favorite Kaboom take the #2 and #3 spots.

Tuesday

Atari 2600

Berzerk - 200 minutes.

Decided tonight to start to try to master game mode 03. My first game was 3420, I was to anxious about Evil Otto that I made really dumb mistakes. My second game I got to 28,930 points, a vast improvement, but I was still making really dumb mistakes. My last game just ended, and I'll admit I just ended up killing myself off in the end because I'm exhausted, but my score was 150,350. Definitely beginning to get the hang out it.
