What's the secret of this version of the game?

I've seen people mention high scores in the hundreds of thousands for this game. What's the trick that I'm missing? At best, I've still been extremely far away from even 100K.

The rivet level is what always gets me. The firefoxes move unpredictably and skip over the gaps without warning. I get to the third or fourth rivet level and I invariably start dying as the firefoxes reverse spontaneously while I climb a ladder or jump. Is there some pattern I'm missing, or some sign of what behaviour they'll use?

I've been playing this for years and I was absolutely convinced that it was effectively impossible to progress much further without a huge amount of pure luck.

It's so easy that it is actually boring. The trick is on the second level work your way up from the left side and cross over to the right and go down. Don't grab the hammers (or whatever they are) on either screen.

Yeah, patience is the key. Don't try to be a hero and don't get trapped. The fireballs can be avoided if you go halfway up a ladder. Just wait it out.

I always grab the hammer so I can have the floor all to myself. Then, using the ladder method, grab a rivet and go right back up, cross over and repeat. That make 3 of the 4 floors pretty easy to do.

It's like all versions of DK, some people are awesome, some suck balls, there is no middle ground :P

Oh, well damn. That pretty much explains my problem with 90% of the games I play. Thank you for clearing that up.

I believe the fireballs also respond to your movements - esp in later levels. You can use this to your advantage.

This game is really not too difficult. I used to play a single game for hours in the early 80's. Don't remember my top score, but I could have played forever if I had not gotten tired and powered off the console.
