kyle #1 Posted January 12, 2011 I guess I'm nuts or something but every year around this time I get back into Atari and classic gaming. I never sell off my stuff or anything like that I just don't really care to play or collect classic video games from say May through Dec. But every year in January it never seems to fail I get right back into ATARI! From now until sometime in the spring I'll buy, play, trade and talk atari. I'm thinking of going out atari hunting this weekend for the first time in almsot a year. Is anyone else like this?
flammingcowz #2 Posted January 12, 2011 For me, every couple of months im into Atari and the next couple im either sick of gaming all together or just play xbox. I usually still stay around this site though whether its on or off season
greencoman #3 Posted January 12, 2011 I guess we all have our differnt moods. For me it seems to be all year but its a company thing. Or it seems that way for me its sega something or nintendo than atari back to sega than atari or something like it. Glad to know I am not the only one with this deal. tz101 #4 Posted January 12, 2011 My classic game collecting goes year round, with no special emphasis on a single system. Lately, I have been building my VCS, 5200, Intellivision, and Colecovision game collections. Depending on what the thrifts have, it might change to SNES and 32X again soon. +Ransom #5 Posted January 12, 2011 I play and collect during the cold months, which is about 6 months a year here in northeast IL. The other six months, I spend time at theme parks. I'm a coaster junkie.
Mirage #6 Posted January 12, 2011 This is my winter hobby, and I have <-------- outdoor/garage summer hobbies. If I ever get a heated garage (or install a heater in the garage I have), I probably won't be here as much in winter either.
akator #7 Posted January 12, 2011 For me, it's the opposite. This time of year I want to play the more modern consoles. I have some strange longing to play PSP, Dreamcast, PSX, and Saturn. Around March I'm way into ColecoVision, 5200, and Vectrex. May brings computers, like VIC-20, Apple II, C-64, TRS-80, Amiga, ST, and old Mac. July is the old stuff, like Pong, 2600, and Odyssey2. September is a desire to get rid of everything and switch to emulation. Lots of emulation, especially MAME. November is my confusion and frustration that I can't feel good about getting rid of anything. Then the cycle starts again. At least I've mostly figured it out
+jd_1138 #8 Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) November is my confusion and frustration that I can't feel good about getting rid of anything. I am latching onto my consoles and games and never getting rid of them. Because the prices will only go up, up, up. I wish I would've kept my ColecoVision, Mattel Aquarius and my NES that I had as a kid, not only to play but for sentimental value. I've been buying up Atari games for my 7800 that I just got, and I will proudly keep these 4 copies of Combat (along with the other commons I have), because it's a great game and I will never worry about not having a working copy. Emulation is alright, but not as fun as busting out Combat on the living room TV when friends or family come over. They know it's a vintage game, and it adds to the charm, playing on the original hardware. Edited January 12, 2011 by gps_trekker
SlowCoder #9 Posted January 12, 2011 I have menstrual cycles like that too. Not that I stop playing video games for any particular system, but I sort of jump from one primary one to the next every few weeks.
Scootiecat #10 Posted January 12, 2011 For me, it also depends on how often I get to the thrift shops and what they have. I also have to balance it with my other collecting. I also collect decks of cards. I have over 700 decks. And I love to go to thrift shops and antique malls and buy cards too. Right now, I'm actually in a Dreamcast phase. Mine broke and I'm waiting to get my new one and I'm building my collection. It will be small though, and will mainly consist of racing games. But I did get Atari Anniversary Edition. Will probably eventually get Namco Museum too.
JPjuice23 #11 Posted January 12, 2011 My Atari playing is on than off, usually a few months on, a few months off. It really doesn't correlate with the seasons, which is partely because I live in Southern California, where there's no excuse for me not to be outside. Stan #12 Posted January 13, 2011 Well, it's colder out, so I have more time for it I suppose, but I guess it is that time of year.
toiletunes #13 Posted January 13, 2011 I got my first 2600 in September, many years ago. I used to play after school/before dinner. Every year, when September rolls around, right around 3 or 4pm, I'll get the urge to play again.
Heavy26R #14 Posted January 13, 2011 Cold season for me. Medicine for cabin fever. I do seek out stuff during warmer months at yard sales and antique shops. I do note that I have never found anything worth purchasing, but I'm always optimistic.
