Favorite Tetris

Recommended Posts

Since the late 80's there have been a slew of Tetris games released on nearly every platform. I was just curious to which ones are your guys favorites and what ones stand out from all the others.

I'd probably have to say I've logged the most hours on the original GameBoy version. As for it being my favorite, I'm not sure, I think its probably just the most convienient. I have the NES (non-Tengen) version also which is still quite enjoyable. I think the newest one I have is Tetris Worlds for the Xbox, which I've logged probably the least time into. I just wanted to see what your guys thoughts were on the series and if there are hidden gems, given how many different versions and ports there are.

My favorite is the NES one. I like the music the most there.

I don't like when tetris started to try and get fancy on me. Plain ass tetris is what I want. None of this attack BS.

For consoles I'd have to go with plain vanilla NES Tetris. It's the core Tetris game play without all of that extra crap tacked on in later versions.

My favorite all around version has to be Tetris Max (aka Bricklayer) for the classic Mac OS. It's an unofficial version but the core gameplay is there and the sound effects are great and the music is fantastic.

For plain vanilla original Tetris, the Mac version was always my favorite. Of all versions ever, I think I like The New Tetris for N64 best. I was just wondering the other day how many hours I've put into various versions of Tetris over the years... must be many hundreds, if not thousands.

The CD-i has a great conversion of Tetris with some beautiful animated backdrops.

The Mirrorsoft conversions for the 8-Bit computers were very good too, especially the ones for the BBC Micro and Spectrum 128k.

I liked playing the version of Tetris that was bundled with Fedora 9 (Linux distro). Too bad I can't find it anywhere underneath the stack of hundreds upon thousands of Linux games. :(

Tetris DS for me. I play this every day and have for years (not kidding, EVERY day) my online scores are in the 7,000's my 200 level completions are 600k - 1m. I don't play any other game more.

I like the nes tetris game best. I don't care if the Tengen version is "better", I like that one better.

Second: Tetris from Microsoft's best of entertainment. ski free is also awesome

third: Gameboy.

I have heard that the Tengen cart for NES is the best and want it badly. I saw it at a game store last week, but they wanted $49 for it loose cart. I didn't want to part with that much cash so passed.

Tengen NES Tetris is stupid because it forces you to pause every 30 lines or so to tally up the score. I think that is STUPID!

Original Gameboy, hands down.

NES gets second place.

I will award 3rd place to Tetris Party on Wii because I have had soem fun with the extra games and playing with the balance board is... interesting. It was worth the price.

I'm partial to two versions: the original gameboy tetris (so convenient and responsive), and The New Tetris on Nintendo 64 (I like the ability to shove one piece aside for a while).

The New Tetris for the Nintendo 64. I think it was one of the first console versions of Tetris (if not the first) that allowed you to store away a piece. Also, the "power block" system makes things really interesting.

Tetris DS is a close second for me, but The New Tetris on the N64 has some things I enjoy more (The power blocks, a constant unlocking scheme as you play more, sort of tribal backgrounds that are well-animated, and a fitting electronic soundtrack).

Was it ...

Unfortunately no, sorry. The one I played had a simpler appearance; no fancy graphical effects or anything. The play window was also fairly small, only focusing on the stuff required in Tetris.

Wow I was going to buy Tetris DS but it's going for 100 bucks new... wtf?

I guess I'll get it used than wow.

Yeah.. Unfortunately, it's been discontinued for several years now. I believe GameStop sells it for $35 on the used market. :(
