Which classic console has the best sound?

Recommended Posts

There have been a lot of different systems compared on aa. How does the sound measure up, and which system's sound do you personally like the most? What games do you think sound the best? We'll say that the cutoff is about 1990 or so...

If the cut off is 1990 then I would say firstly the Megadrive as while alot of the samples sounded ropey there is some brilliant music in alot of the games. Some of my favourite chip tunes are on the Megadrive. Secondly I would say the Lynx as up until then I had NEVER heard speech that good on any machine, just listen to Klax when I got that game it made my jaw drop to the floor.

I like the Turbografx-16's sound the best of that generation's systems.

I like the 5200's sound best of its generation's systems.

I love the sound of the NES, so many of the themes are so iconic. Game Boy also supported great sound from games like Super Mario Land, Shadowgate and the Castlevania series.

I too am partial to the sounds of the Intellivision. Love the crowd cheer, Snafu surfing sound, Tron Deadly Discs hisses and crashes, Locomotion music, etc.

I hope you guys are talking about the SMS's optional FM sound, because if you aren't, all I have to say is WTF is wrong with you people. The regular PSG in the SMS is downright awful. It's the only thing bad about the Master System and I hate it with a passion. It like a toy piano, compared to an electric guitar (Genesis). The only games I've played so far that don't sound absolutely horrendous are Shanghai and Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap.

Anyway, my vote for the best is a tough decision. Cut-off is 1990? That's good, because I can still vote for the Genesis (1989). That thing is a beast when used properly. Runner up would be the NES. It just has such classic sound hardware.

EDIT: Somebody mentioned the Game Boy. If that counts (since it's a handheld), then I add that to my vote. It's just as classic as the NES IMO.

I'd be tempted to say ColecoVision, but I have to go with the NES, if only for such memorable tunes as those in the Mega Man series... and the Contras... and the Castlevanias... Blaster Master... the list goes on and on and on. :)

The NES's sound is for me the quintessential classic.

As for the 16 bit era, I can't choose between the SNES and the Genesis: I appreciate the thick base and depth of sound the SNES can do, as well as the uncannily faithful synthesized instruments in late-gen titles (Chrono Trigger comes to mind), but at the same time I also enjoy the "hard" metallic edge Genesis games have acoustically.

On the other hand, I never cared for the MIDI tunes on either the Playstation or N64 - I thought the SNES was more convincing.

I like the NES's sound. Mostly blaster master and Kirby. It's interesting what people can do with 5 channels.

+1

To this day I'm still moderately impressed by Klax on Lynx. It's hands down my favorite version of the game, and really holds its own against even the arcade version.

What, not votes for the 7800?

Cuz some of the games' sound effects sound like armpit farting noises...

hey I got love for it man but you can tell those 1988 sounds are close to making that '77 sound chip shit the bed... so bad it's awesome!!!

As far as the 8-bitters, probably the C64GS. Sure it's a cheater way to get the C64 into a console list, but it works for me.

Otherwise for the 16-bitters, neo geo barely fits into the 1990 window. Of course, its sound didn't start getting really good until later. Matrimelee really caught my attention with a very vocal soundtrack. That's a really late entry in the neo geo lineup though.

Getting down to 'more standard' hardware of the era, konami did some neat things with it's NES soundtracks. The end song of Super C, and Castlevania III stand out. But the japanese castlevania III, with its custom sound chip, is out of this world.

doesn't it have the 2600 sound chip in it? that makes it way outdated for the time.

The good games had an A8 pokey chip in the cart (like ballblazer), but even that was pretty dated.

Me three on the TurboGrafx. Second place goes to the NES, but only because so much of the music is memorable for me. TG16 chiptunes win hands-down though.
