Hey everyone

I'm new to this message board, and new to Atari's :)

Well, I just got hold of an Atari 1040STe. I've opened it up and I'm sure it's got 4MB of RAM.

I'm hoping if someone on here from England could tell me how much it would cost to get the TOS upgraded to something like 2.06. I know that it's god an old one, I think it might be TOS 1.0.

I would really like to get it upgraded, and I'm just hoping that it's not going to cost too much!

Also, I'm trying to get hold of an Atari Portfolio (the handheld computer that John Conner uses to hack into an ATM in Terminator 2)

Thanks everyone

You mean the actual Portfolio used by Edward Furlong in T2??

My god... that thing went for $12,000 last time (I think). I can't

recall the auction site that sold it...perhaps it was Fleetwood-Owen

(yes, that's Mick Fleetwood). Good luck on finding it. I've got my

eye on Biff Tannen's Oh-la-la magazine seen in Back To The

Future II.... but I'll never actually have enough money to get it.

< I just have my eye on it.... no comment! >

If I understood you wrong, there is a thread here that has some

board members that might be willing to part with one of theirs.

well, not THE actualy one that Edward Fulong used, that'd be cool, especially if it came with that stolen credit card and the connecting cable!

I'm gonna try and get a second hand one off someone, somehow! lol

I have seen one one on ebay a month or so back, probably worth setting up a search and getting it to email you if any appear. I believe that the German EBay is pretty good for Atari stuff as Atari was very popular over in Germany. Possibly look there?

I myself have a German one, the keyboard is a little odd with the chars mixed around, but the keymap sorts that out :)

Not sure where you could get a TOS upgrade from now, Best Electronics may still sell them (US). I got the T-Board when it was released and recommend that one :)

I suppose you could get hold of the ROM image and just burn the ROM's yourself and give that a go? There is a Pirate version that you can boot up with (loads from Disk). as long as you don't mind loosing some RAM?

do you know of anywhere in England that might do the upgrade?

I've been to Atari Workshop, and they sell the ROM, but I don't think it mentions anything about actually performing the upgrade.

About the pirate 2.06 TOS on disk, where can I get it? :P

Just get the ROM's the upgrade itself isn't that hard to do..

As for the rom on disk, checkout LGD www.atari.st

I am sure there is a menu with it on

Hi there ziggomatic

I am sure you don't have Tos 1.0, it just has to be a later version. From what I know Tos 1.0 was only shipped with the earliest of AtariSTs and Atari 1040STE wasn't one of them.

Take care

well, i have no way of finding out what version of TOS is on there, all I can tell you is that the menus on the main desktop are VERY limited

there's no option for customising the colour of the desktop or anything...i don't even have the option to install a desktop icon!

you have TOS 1.6 in your STe, Mega STe's have TOS 2.05 for ones with 720K DSDD drive and TOS 2.06 for the ones with the 1.44Mb DSHD disk drive. As far as the upgrade you have 2 choices, you can buy the ROMS, there are 2 of them, and replace the TOS 1.6, with the TOS 2.06, or you can get a switchable ROM board with the TOS 2.06, with those you pull out the TOS 1.6 roms, insert the board into the ROM sockets on the motherboard, and then insert your TOS 1.6 ROMS into the empty sockets on the board, this gives you the option of switching between the two operating systems. check online for atari vendors to locate someone that has the parts you need. For future reference here is the TOS versions

1.0 - originally on disk, then on ROMS, found in Atari ST's made in 1985/86

1.2 - First revison found in ST's and Mega ST's made from 87-89

1.4 - Second revision, called rainbow TOS for the multicolor atari logo

under the "DESK" menu - note TOS 1.6 for STe's is essentially the

same version with additional code for blitter chip and extended

pallette and stereo sound

1.6 - Atari STe version of TOS 1.4

2.05 - Mega STe version of TOS 1.6

2.06 - revised version of 2.05 with support for high density disk drives

3.05 - for Atari TT030's with DSDD disk drives

3.06 - revised version for TT030's with 1.44Mb floppys

4.00 - prototype for Atari Falcon030

4.04 - general release for Atari Falcon030

hope this answers some questions, feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have any tech questions about your atari computers, I used to repair them back in the day :)

First ST I worked on was the 520ST, without rom. I still recall the start screen of 520, asking for TOS disk :)

On my Falcon there is 4.04, and I also have (like a lot of falcon users...) on disk TOS 4.92. It seems to work well, even if it's considered a beta version.

My first ST (260 ST) in 1987 has no ROMs, I have to boot the TOS from disk (still got the disk).

After 4 weeks I bought the ROMs and my father set them in the ST, it was 1.0.

After 2 years I got TOS 1.04 (1.4) and my ST still got it.

I'm assuming I have version 1.2(1.02?) on my 1040STf, it's on two chips, but my ST doens't show the exact version number anywhere. So, what is the latest version that an unmodified 1040STf can use? Can the 1040STf be upgraded to use the newer STE/TT/Falcon TOS's? I plan on upgrading my STF with a blitter and some other minor hacks, so if using an STE version of TOS is possible, to take advantage of the Blitter, etc., I want to know.

What's this 4.92 thing? I didn't know!

What are the diffferences?

Does it deserve a trial run?

P

Tos 4.92 is the last Falcon TOS from Atari. It was almost complete (I assume that from what I've read on the 'net), when Atari folded, so it was never released. But in the 'net you could find it easily. TOS 4.92 could be loaded from a floppy disk or the disk drive. Nice to note that, when loaded, it shows the Star Trek UFP logo instead of Fuji at the start screen :)
