kyle #1 Posted January 27, 2011 (edited) I love Kung Fu Master on the 2600! It's a great looking game it has some of the best graphics on the 2600. It also has great music and sound. The fact that you can kick punch leg sweep and jump all with one button and a joystick is just awesome. Plus the dragons appearing blowing fire at you and fading away is one of the best looking things on ANY 2600 game if you ask me. After Tapper this is to me the most underrated game on the 2600. I also find Kung Fu Master to be even more fun playing it with a SEGA controller or an atari joypad. By the way I posted this same thread a few years back I wanna see if there are anymore fans of the game now than there were back then. +Omegamatrix #3 Posted January 27, 2011 I also find Kung Fu Master to be even more fun playing it with a SEGA controller or an atari joypad. Have you ever tried with a Genesis Controller? http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/158430-rom-hacks-to-support-2-buttons-with-genesis-controllers/page__view__findpost__p__1973988
Rodrigo #4 Posted January 27, 2011 I also love it. The graphics are amazing and also the sound. Despite you can't jumpkick, it's still a great addictive game.
Cynicaster #5 Posted January 27, 2011 This is one of the last "new" 2600 games I ever got back in the day before jumping ship to the 7800, and NES shortly thereafter. Also, coincidentally, just the other day my sister picked it up for her collection, so I was able to see it again after all this time. IMO, while the game does a good job of stretching the 2600's meager capabilities, I think the game kind of stinks. To me the jump-kick "ho-ya!" was the coolest part of the arcade game, and this port omits it entirely. In general I just don't care for that era of 2600 titles where the remaining developers were biting off more than they (or, rather, the system) could chew (Rampage, I'm looking at you). It's almost akin to that star athlete who tarnishes his legacy by retiring 3 years too late and sucking at the end.
toiletunes #6 Posted January 27, 2011 One of my favorites.
Godzilla #7 Posted January 27, 2011 i thought 2600 kfm was one of the good ones of that era, that got it right. i really like and think it plays well and looks and sounds great.
Buck #8 Posted January 30, 2011 Looks great, sounds great, but man, do I have a hard time when one of those guys catch me. I have always loved the arcade version of this as well!
maiki #9 Posted February 1, 2011 Yeah, the gameplay is not that good (forcing you to push joystick and fire to kick etc.) but this kernel could be used for something like Green Beret 2600 and for sure it would be better than A800 version.
0078265317 #10 Posted February 1, 2011 Hey I just googled kung fu master atari 2600. This looks alot like Kung Fu Nes Nintendo. Even same music.
Lord Helmet #11 Posted February 1, 2011 Hey I just googled kung fu master atari 2600. This looks alot like Kung Fu Nes Nintendo. Even same music. Its the same game. They're both ports of the original Data East arcade game King Fu Master...strangely the 'Master' was dropped from the NES version.
opeygon #12 Posted February 1, 2011 I had this game when it came out. Looking at it now, it is a pretty impressive 2600 port of an arcade game. Back in the day however, I always felt like it sucked, and it made me want to play the arcade game
Stan #13 Posted February 2, 2011 I grew up with the NES version, so I don't own the 2600 one, but I was impressed with it.
james82 #14 Posted February 5, 2011 just played it not long ago ,great game i also own the nes version and i dont like it as much
NightSprinter #15 Posted June 28, 2011 Definitely becoming worth the cash I paid for at a local flea market. I'd say the fourth floor (with its boss) and Mr. X are probably the most difficult parts of the game. Also, to kyle and Omegamatrix, something about playing the game with my Genesis "Megafire" pad just feels right.
Bentley Bear! #16 Posted June 29, 2011 Used to play this quite a bit back in the day when I first got it! It was great for what it was and surely pushed the abilities of the 2600, but it was definitely "neutered" in comparison to other ports, namely the excellent port of it on the NES. The lack of jump kicks and jump punches was a definite disappointment to me... I only wish I knew enough about programming in batari to fix this glaring ommission personally, that's one of the very few things that's missing that would make it a nearly perfect port for the 2600 within it's abilities IMHO. All in all, like most of the activision/absolute arcade ports of the late 80s/early 90s, it's a noble effort,(and one of the better attempts compared to say, Rampage) but perhaps just beyond the abilities of the 2600 to give a faithful port of the arcade game.
NightSprinter #17 Posted June 30, 2011 Bentley, I think it was worse on the 7800. That system had two buttons yet kept the 2600 control setup. I think Absolute could've done a "slightly" better job.
maiki #18 Posted June 30, 2011 (edited) Well, I wouldn't put the NES and 2600 versions next to each other, that's for sure, but the 2600 version is really good and stays above many 8bit ports including C-64! - and plays much better than that 7800 hectic run. And look at the smooth horizontal scrolling... I know it's "fake" but it works... more or less, nothing beats the original Data East Irem coin-op... Yikes. Almost makes me glad I didn't get the 7800 version with what you've said NightSprinter... Yea, after seeing some of the 7800 versions of these after playing the 2600 versions for years, they are almost as much a disappointment. The 7800 was well equipped to do a very accurate port of all of those games IMHO, so far, only Rampage and Commando seem to be the most faithful or most accurate of them. NightSprinter #20 Posted June 30, 2011 Graphically it's better (and just missing the better-detailed sprites and the markers to tell how close you are to the boss like on the NES version), but a lack of 2-button attacking on a system with 2-button controllers doesn't cut it.
