I want to be the CGRHD guy!

Recommended Posts

I watch this show on YouTube all the time and I think its great, but I can't help wanting to be that guy. Sorry I don't know his name, but I don't know that I have noticed it being said in the videos so maybe that is by design.

Think about this man. Beer and Truxton. I will say more later but first let the swelling in your brain go down so as to stop it from popping.

Aside from having this show and all the viewers and all the fun that must go with it, people send him free stuff! Man that is a dream for a collector.

If you are around here CGRHD guy, you are my hero I think. I wish I had thought of your show first, because that would rock. Also, if you aren't getting paid for your show you really should, I have gotten many a game off your reviews.

Mark Bussler is his name. I too have watched him since he started his YouTube channel and I think his reviews are great! And funny!

^^ You should check him out. He's not as over the top as AVGN, but he tends to point out the quality in games instead of the flaws like AVGN

I just can't help but feel the only reason he is so popular is because he was "supposedly" the first video review series on the internet. That doesn't amount to much of anything. If we went by that rule in other areas, people would be praising the Magnavox Odyssey up and down for what a great achievement it was and how revolutionary the games were.

I've been a fan (though not a serious fan or anything) of his reviews since I got into classic gaming.

I like that he shows gameplay in his reviews so that if you're looking to buy the game, you have an idea what you're getting into. He also does try to explain the pros and cons of the game or hardware he's reviewing. I also find his dry wit mildly amusing.

Course, I also pretty much can't stand the AVGN. But then I can't stand potty humor in general. And I'm not much into the Swears either. Yeah, I'm a goody two shoes. :P

He's not for everyone, sure. But then, the entire thing is a satire. My brother would act similarly with some games, yelling and screaming and carrying on about how the game was cheating, and then throwing controllers.

I do watch the show alone, typically. It's not something that's necessarily meant for group viewing.

he was first back in 2000, and he reviews a wide range of games from the 2600 to modern games.

he has the same general tastes i do (2600, Genesis, Dreamcast/action games over rpgs), a dry sense of humor, and he doesnt pretend to be a know-it-all. he isnt tech savvy, so the context of his reviews arent as clouded with nerd speak disguised as real opinion and knowledge.

i also love that he doesnt grade games.

I take CGR reviews over most others because his tastes are pretty well in line with mine. He's about scrolling shooters, fighting games and console racing sims. He doesn't take every game as seriously as I might like, but the flip side is that it tells me that I probably won't bother playing it long enough to figure it out either. The number of reviews he's done frequently put him at the top of my queue when I'm looking up games before ebay purchases.

Along with the pure number of reviews he's done, his video capture process is high on my list. He always takes his video from real consoles, and he does it with proper equipment. Most of the time I just want to see a few seconds of a game before I buy it, and wind up staying for the review. His sure beats some of the stuttering framerates, emulator captures and tv-filming I otherwise have to deal with.

One thing that does bug me is that I don't believe he has a steering wheel, so I have to take his console racing sim opinions with a bit of reservation. There are also enough other sources for RPG/Strategy reviews that I don't mind him skipping over those genres totally.

I enjoy his reviews as well. His sense of humor is just right for what he's doing, and he lets you see enough of the game (and explains enough about what's going on) to form something of your own opinion. Plus he seems to be pretty broad-minded about the older systems. He doesn't seem to feel the need to express complete disdain for any system, and even simple games have their better points brought forward during his reviews.

I like AVGN as well, but those aren't reviews so much as performance pieces.

Like a few others if I'm looking at buying a new game or would like to get something new but don't know what yet I look for his reviews first. If nothing else the information he covers is the same in most videos so you are going to get a good idea of what the game is before you buy it. His review actually made me buy House of the Dead for the Wii. I had heard from the dumb shits at GameStop that reloading required a button press so I put the game back. Then I see his review and he took the time to mention shooting off screen worked. I got the game that day.

I guess the point of the post is he seems like a real gamer more then some others and as such he knows what information we really want and he gives it. I dig him the most of all the reviewers I've seen.

Naw, mostly his videos are popular because he is laid back, easy going, has a sense of humor and doesn't take himself too seriously like a lot of people doing the same type of thing. He also uploads a lot of videos and covers a lot of different areas of gaming from software to hardware old and new. That is why he is popular.

Wow, I guess I'm not seeing it. I just watched 3 of his videos and could barely stay awake through them. Point to one you guys think is actually good. Maybe I just happened to pick 3 lame ones.

His videos are often slow paced (tho not as slow paced and meandering as some of the others out there). So I can see why you might have been bored. I was for the first several I watched, too. But I was looking for info on some console and its games at the time (I don't recall which), so I kept slogging through them. At some point, it just became something I accepted about his style.

Yeah, it's not that I need a ton of excitement to hold my interest, but he not only was slow, but just didn't really seem to say much <shrug>. I'll watch a few more though, since you guys like him, there must be something there.

Keep in mind its classic video games he's reviewing, its not going to be an on the edge of your seat action packed 3 minutes

No, I get that, but a presentation about anything doesn't need to be boring and pointless. Like I said, he has tons of videos, I may have just not found the ones I'm interested in yet.

Okay, I found one that wasn't too bad (Alien Invaders Plus). He has a subtle humor that can be funny, and normally that would be just my style (I guess I'm not in a real subtle mood right now). But yeah, I guess he's okay, or can be.

If I actually review a game at any point, I'd like to think I'd make a video and then link to the text review. I hate listening to someone drone on about something while watching. I want to see and hear the game.

the slow pace allows for longer clips of gameplay footage. 1-2 second gameplay clips do not do a good job of showing how a game plays
