Armonigann #1 Posted January 29, 2011 (edited) As topic says. Me personally, I'm going with the NES. Lord only knows how many NES controllers(or console for that matter ) have been thrown and broken because of a game. What console do you believe had/has the hardest games? bomberpunk #2 Posted January 29, 2011 it's totally the NES. a bulk of the library predated or opted out of saving and checkpoints. and look at Contra. those 30 extra lives don't mean shit.
Austin #3 Posted January 29, 2011 That's a tough call. I'd honestly say it's pretty even between most of the systems from the 8 and 16-bit eras. They all had their fair-share of platformers, shooters, action games and more that were fairly difficult, sometimes even brutal in the old-school sense (sans-checkpoints that was mentioned above). Well, actually, I take that back--I am going to go with the Neo Geo (AES or CD) as one of the platforms with the most-difficult games. The majority of the games were designed to take your money (having originated in the arcades). I can run through many NES games on one life or one credit, but I'll be damned if I can do that on any Neo-Geo game.
Taskmaster99 #4 Posted January 29, 2011 Im also going with Neo Geo AES/CD. Trying to get through some of the games is a task in itself. Magician Lord for one. Damn that game is hard!!!!
GKC #5 Posted January 29, 2011 Of the consoles I have its the NES.
Arkhan #6 Posted January 29, 2011 it's totally the NES. a bulk of the library predated or opted out of saving and checkpoints. and look at Contra. those 30 extra lives don't mean shit. Hi. I can beat contra without the 30 lives code. lol I think The hardest games are on the C64/Amiga because of the retarded 1 button for games that shouldn't have 1 button thing. But those aren't consoles. :-/
chrisbid #7 Posted January 29, 2011 id say the master system,
mbd30 #8 Posted January 29, 2011 Im also going with Neo Geo AES/CD. Trying to get through some of the games is a task in itself. Magician Lord for one. Damn that game is hard!!!! Yep. "Viewpoint", "Pulstar", "Metal Slug" series, "Magician Lord", "Last Resort", etc. The Neo Geo has a bunch of tough games. Makes sense considering that it is first and foremost arcade hardware, so the games are designed to suck quarters.
Gabriel #9 Posted January 29, 2011 I'll go with Neo Geo as the hardest with NES a close second. Neo Geo was hard by intent, since the games were meant to be quarter suckers. The NES library is hard because developers worshiped at the altar of piss poor game design.

high voltage #11 Posted January 29, 2011 Wow, I always thought NES games were easy. I mean you play a bit, get the code, come back later to the game, play some more where you left off...etc
mbd30 #12 Posted January 29, 2011 Wow, I always thought NES games were easy. I mean you play a bit, get the code, come back later to the game, play some more where you left off...etc Not all NES games have any way to continue where you left off (at least without using cheats). Go beat "Battletoads" or "Ghosts n Goblins" then talk about NES games being easy.
Petran79 #13 Posted January 29, 2011 I find modern fps and sports simulators incredibly hard with so many buttons and quick reflexes. If they had not so many save points... Eg for fifa you have to read 15 pages of player control moves! While we played football games with 2-3 buttons. Really better to play real football. Less tiresome and there is a better chance to perform those tricks! I agree about commodore.

GnG made me break a controller as a kid Even though I was playing GnG on the Genesis I can concur that this is a tought game. I felt so dejected after thinking I had beat it only to discover that I had to start back at the beginning and beat it again I couldn't do it.
ls650 #16 Posted January 30, 2011 As soon as I saw the topic I thought 'Neo Geo'.
toptenmaterial #17 Posted January 30, 2011 NES. Right away I think of Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden and SMB 2.
Taskmaster99 #18 Posted January 30, 2011 Quite a few have mentioned Ghosts N Goblins. I remember many moons ago when my parents grounded me from my NES for chucking a controller across the room thanks to that freakin game!!!
Tr3vor #19 Posted January 30, 2011 What? Its possible to break an NES controller, not any time in my life or anyone's that I personally know have broken a NES controller. Except the time one of my cousin's dogs chewed up the end for a controller so It wouldn't fit in the NES. yep NES wins for me. I cannot get past the stupid crab in area 5 in blaster master, cant get past level 4 (or was it 5) on batman. SMB3 is a bitch. I just barely figured out the patterns of hammer bros and the hammer bowsers in smb1.
Itchy Koala #20 Posted January 30, 2011 NES is definitely the one. Earlier games were too simple to be hard, later games had save states.

The Genesis version is a different game ("Ghouls n Ghosts") and easier than "Ghosts n Goblins". The Genesis game is beatable with enough time and effort. I've done it. MagitekAngel #22 Posted January 30, 2011 Neo Geo was my first instinct as well. Let's go with that.

I've done it. Yeah, Ghouls 'n Ghosts is easier at points than Ghosts 'n Goblins.. But it certainly has its annoying parts! Also, I'd like to note that I feel the arcade version of Ghosts 'n Goblins is actually easier than the NES version. It doesn't have the choppiness, odd platform detection, flicker, and more issues that the NES game has. It's much more precise and smooth overall and is a hell of a lot easier to play.
