mark #1 Posted December 12, 2002 just pondering something. is it possible to take a 2600 jr. and hook it up to one of those super small portable tv's (5") or a gameboy color to make a sort of cheap portable 2600? now the power supply would be a big rechargable battery or something. but everything would fit in a briefcase. i don't know anything technical about electroics but what do you think? Channel 2 #2 Posted December 12, 2002 A Gameboy, no. A portable TV should work if it has an antenna jack. Probably the most technical part of the job would be splicing cables and perhaps transformers. There's a forum dedicated to making portables at http://www.classicgaming.com/vcsp/ Seems like a good place to get some knowlegable help. Thinking about a briefcase sized portable has given me an idea: why not use a miniature generator instead of rechargeable batteries?
Curt Vendel #3 Posted December 12, 2002 Sure, its possible... You'll need to do the Composite mod on it and most of the LCD monitors are composite. I currently have a 2600 among other consoles hooked to composite and RF in ports on the back of an Sansung 150MP 15" LCD monitor, the other thing that you'll see is that the image is a little washed out, but you can do a lot of adjustments and make it look pretty clear. JDR, MCM Electronics and Jameco all sell 4" and 5" Composite LCD monitors on the cheap. Many car audio places sell mini lcd monitors in cases with built in speakers, but they are rather pricey. Cupcakus #4 Posted December 12, 2002 http://www.classicgaming.com/vcsp/ I think he built one with a camcorder battery :-)
King Atari #5 Posted December 13, 2002 One that hooks into the GBA would be cool, but as previously stated, not possible.
Trey #6 Posted December 13, 2002 why couldn't a 2600 emulator work on a gameboy? i know nothing of modern game systems, so i don't know the underlying arch. if a cart was made that had the emu on it, and you put several .bin's on it, why not? how about using an Ipaq or any PocketPC? when i first got my Ipaq, there was a version of mame for it. i was running the actual ms. pac man rom on the Ipaq. can mame emu the 2600? is there a stella Ipaq port? if so, there is a cheap portable, right there. Yeah the Gameboy advance should be able to handle a 2600 emu but I don't think anyone has gotten around to program one for it, there are emulators for NES, SMS, and the Spectrum out right now. The NES one works decently. And here's a 2600 emu for PocketPC's http://pocketvcs.emuunlim.com/ There are too many emus for ipaq, pocketpcs, and palms to list so it's an active community. raindog #9 Posted December 13, 2002 Back to the "using a gameboy as a display" question, I have a Gameboy Advance TV tuner and composite input cartridge in the post from Hong Kong right now (a gift for my niece.) So you could use the Gameboy as a very small and rather low resolution 2600 display, but you'd probably do better with one of those 80 dollar active matrix TV's like (name forgotten) used for his portable 2600 a year or two ago. Or a Playstation screen for $100 or so. As for using the GBA as an Atari display, even with the tuner available my best hope is for the eventual maturity of the emulators. The NES emulator is working great at this point so it seems only a matter of time before a passable free 2600 emulator makes the rounds. And you can get every game, hack, demo and what have you ever made onto one of those grey market GBA flash carts, so I'll be pretty happy Rob

moycon #12 Posted December 14, 2002 Wasn't someone making an Atari Emulator for Gameboy color...(Or maybe it was Gameboy Advanced) I swear I remember a site that had status and pictures of this. But now that I think of it...I haven't heard anything about it for a good while.
Cupcakus #13 Posted December 14, 2002 Andrew Davie told me he has wrote GBA emulator demo but never finished... he said it was a little slow but would probably work with a little optimization.
moycon #14 Posted December 14, 2002 I do remember that one of the issue with it was that it ran a tad too slow. But I thought that was being addressed. I just did a look up and found a message Andrew posted a year ago. The link is still good: From: "Andrew Davie" Date: Tue, 4 Dec 2001 18:22:27 +1100 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm not sure if I've announced it before, but I have been working in my spare time on an Atari 2600 emulator for the Gameboy Advance. Well, thinks have progressed nicely, and I'm now able to reveal that the emulator is up and running, and though in very preliminary stages, it does run Qb quite happily. You can follow progress, and see screenshots - and soon even download binaries - from www.2headed.com/2600.html Cheers A -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think that this was the site I was talking about though. Same deal with the framerate: http://www.otakunozoku.com/gbavcs/ This was posted June of 2001 !!! I'm suprised there is not a GBA Atari Emu perfected at this time. I guess there were some obstacles that couldn't be overcome?? Perhaps Andrew can update.
Cupcakus #15 Posted December 14, 2002 Andrew said it was finishable... he just lost interest in it... I'll ask him again next time I see him on IRC if he ever plans to pick it up again... Or maybe he'll just reply here before I can :-)
