toptenmaterial #26 Posted February 1, 2011 I remember as a kid Turok for N64 used to scare the s**t out of me. My friend up the street had turok 2... the cerebral bore was a great weapon!!
BEERS AND VIDEOS #27 Posted February 1, 2011 Haunted House and Halloween on the Atari 2600 used to scare the hell out of me as a kid and still are creepy. The simplistic graphics and sound just add to the eeriness. Resident Evil has always been suspenseful and is always good for a jump. Sweet Home on the NES/Famicom is pretty creepy too. Again, the simple graphics and music just add to the mood.
raskar42 #28 Posted February 1, 2011 my son is scared by haunted house. he always wants to look at the 'scary'box art. also the picture in the red catalog of the warrior entering a dungeon scares him, it's his favorite picture. If i could figure out a way to make a poster of it i would.

128Kgames #30 Posted February 1, 2011 Resident Evil 1. When you're walking down the hall, and those demon dogs jump through the boarded up windows. Resident Evil, agreed. Especially the only un-cut version for the PC. Creeped me out back in the day, and the series itself still does. Have to give it up for Dead Space on the 360 for the modern consoles, I literally stopped playing it from being too spooked at times (that, and dying all the time). I must be getting old. Picked it up months later just to prove I could beat it on the hardest setting. The sequel seems to be just as bad, and my Wife won't let me play it in front of the kids.

+Ransom #32 Posted February 1, 2011 When I was a kid, I'd be startled while playing AD&D (Cloudy Mountain) on the Intellivision. Creeping along the corridor, waiting for some small noise to tell you that a monster is up ahead...and then BAM, it's a demon and he's beating the crap out of you before you know it. MagitekAngel #34 Posted February 2, 2011 Never been scared by a game, truth be told. The closest I can think of is Eternal Darkness. And Fatal Frame was fairly creepy too.
WatchVenusSpa #35 Posted February 2, 2011 For me Friday the 13th for NES was one I had to play with all of the lights on in the house. Jason would come out randomly and combined with the scary music would make me crap my pants when I was a kid.
CGQuarterly #36 Posted February 2, 2011 As far as classic games go, based on my experiences as a kid I would have to give the nod to Shadowgate for the NES. I like the game, but it creeped me out and still does. As far as modern games are concerned, Resident Evil 4 tops my list. I certainly haven't played every horror game out there though. But RE4 just got scarier and scarier as the game went on. Chris
almightytodd #37 Posted February 3, 2011 Doom on the PC at the time when it first came out... ...especially if played in the middle of the night in the dark. There was also a nice hack of Half Life called, "They Hunger" - monsters in a mental institution... ...pretty creepy.
A_Locomotive #38 Posted February 3, 2011 Eternal Darkness for the GameCube is a damn scary game at times. And the first time you get smacked with one of its 3rd wall breaking scares it will freak you the hell out.
gooch3008 #39 Posted February 3, 2011 (edited) I feel obligated to post these links. This game needs more recognition! And more entertaining and telling of the games scare factor, this video. He is playing the game while talking on skype with a couple of friends who are also playing it. (Possibly NSFW for language) AMNESIA WHAT THE F*** I finally got ahold of a copy of Eternal Darkness a week or so ago, I cannot wait to play it. atarilovesyou #40 Posted February 3, 2011 I agree with the majority quoting the Resident Evil dog through the window gag...well, that was the first zinger, but there was more. There was a point the first time I played it where I was in the room with the keypad and the bee hive. I didn't see the bees until I was in the room, walking around like nothing was going on. Then a friggin BEE flys past, creepin buzzin noise, while I was on my way to enter the punch code...that freaked me more than the dog! It only happened that way once though, as it was pure chance that the bee happened to be on screen at the time. Resident Evil 2 also had some great moments...mainly where you KNEW something was going to happen because it looked so obvious, but then you find it's safe, only to pass by the same window six more times before a zombie comes crashing through the window!...I literally dropped my controller once, it was that bad, lol...with a then-new tech of force feedback, it creeped the hell outta me. Resident Evil was always good for that tense mood.

HatefulGravey #42 Posted February 3, 2011 My brother was scared to death of Resident Evil 2 when I got it for Christmas back in the day. I mean freaked out! He wouldn't play it, and could barely watch me play it at first. Later on he started to play it but only if I was in the room. My personal freak out game was Manhunt. I don't think it really scared the crap out of me or anything, but I remember feeling very real fear of being found and killed. I had a physical reaction to death in that game. Just a creepy game all the way around. (After reading the title of this thread I had to go order another copy as my original one was traded in)
xenomorpher #43 Posted February 3, 2011 Personally, I think the original Silent Hill is the scariest game ever. The second one felt like you were in the "fog world" most of the game, but Pyramid Head showing up at times bumped up the scare factor too. I also thought the atmosphere music in the first one was way better. I think it put you on edge more with the loud grinding, and I don't think the second one had that as much. I had the first Silent Hill since it came out and was finally able to complete it about two years ago, which was after I completed the second one. I always thought the Resident Evils weren't scary at all. They did have a few surprise jump out parts, but that was about it. The Gamecube re-make and the third Resident Evil are probably the scariest out of the Resident Evils. When Nemesis comes on screen at full speed, it scares the crap out of me. Friday the 13th for the NES made my friend jump up and scream, which scared the crap out of me, when Jason first appeared in a cabin. I can see it giving you a good jump if you're playing late at night and not paying too close attention. AVP for the Jaguar as the marine can be pretty scary, but when you don't have the motion tracker. The original Alone in the Dark can be scary I think because the combat system, at least for the 3DO, isn't great at all. You basically run away or barricade yourself instead of blowing monsters away with a gun. But the overall design of the game has put me off some, and I'll give it another chance sometime. Eternal Darkness is more creepy and weird then it is scary to me. I really love how the game messes with your mind. Too bad more games don't do this. Dead Space and the second one I think are the two scariest games of the current generation. Sure the first one has a scare formula, but it works because of the environments. I really love that one necromorph that's kind of like Nemesis in the third Resident Evil. The second game is a lot more intense and as scary, maybe more in some aspects. bomberpunk #44 Posted February 3, 2011 oh i totally forgot... E.T. for the Atari 2600 gave me nightmares (no, not in a video game crash kind of way). when we were younger, my brother would play the game because he knew the intro headshot and song scared the hell out of me and made me cry. seeing the E.T. death scene made me cry. everything about that game horrified me, being chased by all those people, dying in the holes, the creepy walking noise, everything. years later i can only laugh at how dumb i was. Austin #49 Posted February 4, 2011 DOOM 3 on the PC when at max settings and played in a dark room with headphones (or loud on a surround sound system). F.E.A.R. played in the same manner can be creepy (and tense) as well.
SoulBlazer #50 Posted February 4, 2011 Glad to see someone mentioned System Shock 2. The original is a damn scary game also. Others I will mention include Doom 1 and 2, the Silent Hill and Resident Evil games, and 'D' for the 3DO.
