HatefulGravey #51 Posted February 4, 2011 Glad to see someone mentioned System Shock 2. The original is a damn scary game also. Others I will mention include Doom 1 and 2, the Silent Hill and Resident Evil games, and 'D' for the 3DO. I do remember as a child my dad got a used PC from a friend. It ran DOS as I remeber. He hit DIR and I saw nothing but DOOM on the screne. There were other things, but for some reason DOOM was all I saw. He ran the program at my request. I remember him protesting as no one in the house knew what it was at the time and he thought it might be a virus or something. When that game started we played for hours, and played often there after. That game did have the effect of scaring the crap out of me from time to time. When you turn a corner and there are imps every where, and then you have tripped a secret door behind you that release pinkies behind you too and you have no idea. Yeah, that was a little scary as a kid. Oh, and all the flashing lights and imps screaming on the other side of the map.
chris36 #52 Posted February 5, 2011 For some reason I found The Shalebridge Cradle episode of Thief: Deadly Shadows (modern PC game) to be pretty creepy.
Koopa64 #53 Posted February 5, 2011 Similarly, later in Second Sight, eventually you go through the mental part of the asylum. There are these guys in straitjackets that you can let loose or not. For some reason I thought they were overly scary, just in how they moved. I don't think they made any noise, but they had a creepy look and shuffled around. Egh... HatefulGravey #57 Posted February 7, 2011 Before Doom or Manhunt there was a game that scared the crap out of me for no good reason. Master Blaster. Something about the intro to that game, I think it was the music and the frog eating the radio active stuff or something. I was going through my NES games and playing a little of this one and that one yesterday and I put in Master Blaster and got a little of that old spine crawl. That music reminded me of the freakout factor that game had for me back in the day. Also, I've never really gotten anywhere in that game, never really took the time to understand it. I played Master Blaster a few years ago. I only played a little bit and don't recall being scared by it, but I'll give it another try. I remember that Spelunker on the NES used to creep me out when the ghost came after you and the music changed. Music used to freak me out as a little kid, I even thought that the underworld music in SMB1 was scary!!

Petran79 #61 Posted February 7, 2011 Scary and sick: Harvester (PC) Especially the moments where there is night in the town. The scenes later in the lodge were not that scary. Scary and funny: Ecstatica 1 (PC) If it were not for that funny ellipsoid 3d design you would think this was a children's title, but it is not! Scary and tense: Bad Mojo (PC) Being a cockroach and crawling in various realistic dirty places of a building makes it very tense. Though they edited the toilet to make it look clean! When i was a kid i was scared by the platform game Warlock's Quest for the Amiga. When you are used to Mario.... Also as an adult the horror trilogy Elvira 1, jaws of cerberus and waxworks scared me a lot in some scenes. Reminded me of all those great 80s horror flicks, before movies and video games started copying saw and hostel for good. I have to try Personal Nightmare and some text based horror games since nothing is scarier than your imagination.

FastRobPlus #65 Posted February 9, 2011 After playing Fatal Frame II, no game will ever scare me again Haunted bowling alleys don't scare me.
FastRobPlus #66 Posted February 9, 2011 Has anyone mentioned Rescue on Fractalus yet? That's literally the only game I've ever seen make people jump or scream out loud. My sleeper nomination: Rustin Parr. It flew in under the radar, but it was a semi-sequel to Nocturne and used the Nocturne engine. It was programmed by the "A" team at TRI
toptenmaterial #67 Posted June 9, 2011 The death screen on Missle Command is kinda freaky... I don't think they would use the strobe effect today for fear of triggering seizures.
JamesD #68 Posted June 9, 2011 There is nothing scarier than E.T. on the 2600. I win. Oh... not that kind of scary? Damn.... If a PC game counts, Clive Barker's Undying. I moved into a large room in the game and saw something on the floor across the room. It was an odd shape so I moved closer to the monitor to see if I could figure out what it was and a creature suddenly arose from a body it was on and started bounding towards me. I jumped back from the monitor and then was dodging and weaving my head around trying to avoid it. It was fast! I've never jumped that much from any other game. +bennybingo #69 Posted June 9, 2011 Scariest video game looks like this: Scary because this is what it looks like when you buy an expensive game off of ePay that is SUPPOSEDLY NTSC according to the seller...very scary moment! ...staying on the true topic tho... Condemned was suspenseful as heck Silent Hill was the creepiest game I ever played.
Cynicaster #70 Posted June 9, 2011 I played Resistance 2 on PS3 last year, and while overall the game isn't very scary/creepy, the scene where you're on that deserted farm and dozens of those tall and lanky zombie alien things start hatching from their cocoons and come sprinting towards you is easily one of the freakiest video game moments of my almost 30 years of playing. Of course, that just makes it all the more satisfying to watch their guts splatter about when you unload on them.
SwampFox56 #71 Posted June 9, 2011 I played a game called "Polybius" at an arcade when I used to live in Portland, Oregon back in the 80's. That game gave m nightmares for years after playing. It was weird though, because all it was like was Tempest, mixed with Asteroids.

MrBeefy #73 Posted June 12, 2011 Friday the 13th on NES.... Hey it was when I was really young. I didn't like it when I inadvertantly found a way to give Jason infinite health. (in case you want to know when you do the last fight on any day do it in front of a cabin. When he goes transparant constantly try to go into the cabin. When you do Jason's health will be full and nothing takes it away).
DickNixonArisen #74 Posted June 12, 2011 There are two games that should be mentioned here that are not really SCARY per se but do a good job of evoking a consistent eerie mood: Fragile dreams: farewell ruins of the moon and Baroque. They're both set in really bleak but beautiful worlds and have twisty stories with a few moments that will make you jump. Megaman 64/Legends also does a good job of making you feel involved; it's "Scary" in that you feel genuinely unnerved by a powerful enemy.
