Tubular Gearhead #1 Posted February 1, 2011 I just bought a pair of new in the box 5200 joysticks on Ebay, and I was surprised to see that the boxes say 1987 Atari Corp! I had no idea that Atari Corp was supporting the 5200 with replacement sticks as late as 1987. They look great, and are brand new- are these what is known as Rev-9? Thanks in advance, I am not as familiar with the 5200 as with other Atari products, so I appreciate the input...
Tubular Gearhead #2 Posted February 1, 2011 I did a little more searching and found the answer! http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/54904-1987-a5200-controller-slightly-different/ Pretty cool, I am glad I found these. I got them for $26 shipped last week, and they even came in the outer packing box that holds 4 of them. I kind of wish I would have asked if they would have sold me more.. So I think I found my answer but thanks anyway folks.

peedenmark7 #8 Posted February 2, 2011 then I feel real bad about what I paid for my pair from this guy, but hey I wanted them and NOS is NOS ... find others once this guy is out of them...I seldom see them pop up new in the box. my recently purchased sealed NOS 2 port system [mexican made controllers] I'd bet are the same as the loose used stamped mexico having rev.7 in it. your taiwan should be the same as the taiwan controller I rebuilt last week that had a rev8 flex circuit in it... rev 8's have the carbon tracers on the flex circuit... chances are you will be rebuilding what you bought in short order as the carbon ones seem to crap out real fast ,thats been my experience with them anyway. I dont care for rev 8 flex circuit. give me 9 or at the least

Wow, he must have figured things out real quick after I got mine for $20! Too bad the price skyrocketed so fast... This guy used to run the only Atari store in San Diego in the 1980s. I still remember when they ("Warners" it was called) closed down in 1992 or so and he literally bagged up garbage bags full of 25 and 50 Atari 2600 and 5200 games and controllers for $50 and $100 respectively. These same 5200 controllers were going for basically two bucks each if you bought one of his multiple garbage bags full. Each bag also had multiple copies of the Mystique games and lots of NOS Starpath Superchargers and tape games inside. I bought a couple at the time, but always regretted not buying more. That includes Atari Corp. versions of the 5200 box and games as well.
peedenmark7 #14 Posted February 4, 2011 curious if any other buyers of these joysticks have had any troubles ? I got both today and neither function properly, neither go to the right, and one of the 2 does not move up. pretty much the same thing I experienced with the 2 that were in the sealed 2 port system I bought last month... 2 non functional are bad enough, but now 4.. yikes.. Are you sure that your system isn't bad? I have had a few 5200 systems with bad controller ports. It would not shock me to see broken new old stock 5200 controllers but I would expect most of those problems to be fire buttons or other buttons on the controllers. It appears to be a hybrid of the green mylar rev8 with the carbon tracers. these joysticks also carry the later [cheap] pots. everything on the joystick functions perfectly but the movement. I sprayed the pots out and no change. so after having rebuilt a bunch of these joysticks ,[and unless I am doing something very wrong] I am of the mindset that if you want an atari cx-52 box, spend for the box not the joystick inside. I'll admit I wanted a boxed joystick, and paid for as such, but it would be nice if they functioned even after a thorough cleaning. from now on ,I'll stick to rebuilding good clean used ones.... or if the need arises, buy with warranty from best elec. Sorry to hear that your joysticks didn't work. I thought about buying a couple of new 5200 joysticks from that eBay seller when the price was lower. I don't have a working set of Atari 5200 joysticks right now but when I buy them I probably will just buy them refurbished from Best.
peedenmark7 #18 Posted February 5, 2011 seller did take care of me. I believe he is a stand up guy and wasnt trying to dupe anybody, though I would think as a former store owner he would know that they could be junk, and should have listed as such. the rev9 flex circuits in these controllers are indeed some weird hybrid of the rev. 8 with carbon tracers, the pots are total crap .. they are CTS brand which being after a 28 yr guitar repairman I found odd that they were so cheaply made as most guitar guys look for this brand in the vintage circles. they are metal and plastic with a carbon strip glued down for the sweepers to run on, what a joke... one pot was so full of black corrosion it looked like black sand running out of it as I cleaned it... the one I opened needs a new flex circuit and pots for sure... the other I havent even opened but will assume the same.. I'll just get the new parts from best and be done with it. if nothing else I got a NOS controller housing, boot, and no kiddie boogers to contend with All's well that ends well.
