Cases where you differ from most (online) reviews

Recommended Posts

A little highly subjective list based on my not yet half a year long gaming experience...

- Hard Drivin´ - I definitely like it, it reminds me of Stunt Car Racing and I don´t find it "hard" at all. It´s manageable and great for 10 minute breaks. Don´t expect more than that, however but it´s on my heavy rotation actually!

- Robotron - Sorry, I really can´t manage this at all. I promise I have tried but...I sold it again. I have given up :)

- Hydra - the very same. I have never really been successful with the controls and usually run dry before I reach the first stop! Sold it, too, to swap ot for a diff. game.

- Lemmings - it is ok, sure...but I don´t find it as outstanding as it is described on many places. Maybe I simply can´t plan enough but from all the levels I have managed maybe five...I tend to play the same again. Personally I would never have rated it as one of the very best games for the Lynx... it´s just me. It indeed is beautifully executed, it´s just not my genre I think.

- Turbo Sub. FWIW it generally gets good marks but I was unable to make it past the underwater columns. Swapped it.

- Rampage - Reviewers tend it stress it becomes boring or repetitive soon but I find myself playing this over and over and over, on a par with Xenophobe! Rampage is in my top five.

- Hockey - Not counting the race games, this is my favourite sports game (with the exception of Biathlon in Alpine Games)! Don´t understand why Hockey is so rarely mentioned. I can immerse myself into this much better than into Awesome Golf or Robosquash :)

- California Games - I have loved this on the 2600 but the Lynx game I find overrated. BMX always gives me a chuckle, footbag I can play endlessly but I still suck at surfing, let alone Skateboarding. I know this was a launch title and it offers variety.

Any reviews you´d like to put straight this way because you personally differ from what seems to be the public opinion? Highly subjective, of course! I just find a few names overrated, really just two or three, and others which usually get bad marks I personally enjoy a lot. (This is said by someone who´s just played Kung Food for a full half hour :D )

Lemmings: I have never played the game before I played it on the Lynx (Yes... sometimes I live under a rock).

It is good for what it is... but I need more time with it. For the most part I think it could deserve a higher rotation slot into the Lynx, but I haven't given it much of a chance. Others live by it... say it is greater than beer... but I'm not completely sold on it.

A game like HUMANS for Sega was great... and the adaptation of it for the Lynx is awesome in my opinion.

I think Dinolympics is HIGHLY under-rated.

I too believe California Games is over-rated on the Lynx.

Rampage: it does get repetitive... but alot of those type of games do. I have taken it out of my Lynx for over a year now... because of a High Score Challenge that almost killed me. LOL

Batman - graphically its outstanding, but its one of the most unfair challenges I've played. As a kid I desperately wanted to beat it but never managed. With an emulator I finally got to beat it, and its a big disappointing ending..

Joust - I do like arcade games since they can picked up fast, but for some reason this one doesn't do the trick for me. Its been claimed its a faithful port, I guess I wouldn't like the original either.

Gauntlet - I really enjoyed playing this one. The only thing wrong with it is the name of the game.. it gave wrong expectations I guess.

Looking back at it. That was insane.

I agree with Eric De Lee about DINOLYMPICS being underrated. If you like DINO DUDES on Jaguar, you'll love DINOLYMPICS. It's one of the very best puzzle games on the Lynx (and that is one genre that the Lynx really has a great library).

I also enjoy HOCKEY a lot. It's a good portable version of video game hockey. I used to play it endlessly back in the day.

I strongly recommend MS. PAC MAN, which is arcade-perfect on the Lynx. It is such an addictive game.

The most over-bashed game on the Lynx is KRAZY ACE MINI GOLF. I love the game. The graphics are super-cute and colorful and the premise of the game is really fun. It's the ultimate "chilled" game: no time constraints, nobody shooting at you. Just take your time mastering each of the 9 (really 7...) holes and have fun! The best part is that it sllows two players on one Lynx, one of only a handful of Lynx games to do so. It's perfect to play with your wife or that special someone...

Whether it's worth spending such high prices on, though, is your decision. Right now, 16/32 Systems in the UK has it for 34 British Pounds, plus 4.30 more for shipping to the US, which comes out to under $62. The customer service that Nick Harlow provides is excellent and he packages games really, really well for international orders. If you like this kind of game, go for it...

One of the most underrated games for me is VIKING CHILD. I loved this on the Atari ST and the LYNX version makes for a good solid platformer which just happens to be very good looking to. I think the whole LEMMINGS thing is connected with the fact that is was released so late and it was also very ambitious. The full intro and everything. Does anyone know how many levels it has?

Actually Viking Child is rather overrated in my opinion. The game has potential, but the speed is far too slow and the game is ruined by that. You can emulate it with 200% speed and that is an average speed for a platformer. Why the devs destroyed a promising game with slow motion is beyond me.

As for Rygar... I agree with matashen. Actually, matashen gave me loose copy of Rygar for free and I was immediately hooked. It is a simple yet well designed game. It gets challenging later on, but the average gamer can manage the first levels very well. Great learning curve! It is actually one of the very best Lynx games imo, and I'd rate it an 8,5 out of 10.

Robotron I kind of like, but it does not work perfecty because you usually need two sticks for it. They could have improved the graphics a lot though.

Scrapyard Dog is somewhat overrated imo. It is okay seeing the lack of competition on the system, but it is still many, many miles away from the really good jump'n runs of the late 80ies and early 90ies.

120, I believe. I poured hours of my childhood into that game and beat every one of 'em. The end credits are very funny. They take at least 15 minutes, and whoever coded them was trying to reach a certain number of Kb of text, so they threw in poems and random musings about how awesome the Lynx is. I looked for a Youtube video of it to include here, but I can't seem to find one. I can't find the ending at vgmuseum.com either. Oh, well.

Obviously I don't differ much from the general Lemmings consensus. :)

Back on track, I think Kung Food is a great little beat-em-up. It gets criticized a lot for being overly difficult and who knows what else, but I find it very playable. Although I think I've only picked it up once since I beat it, I had a good time working on it when I was younger.
