HatefulGravey #1 Posted February 19, 2011 I have an Atari 7800 though I rarely use it. I think to use a 2600 for 2600 games and the 7800 is unplayable to me. The controller is the problem, and I know good and well I'm not the only person hating that thing. I have seen videos on youtube that claim the Genesis controller works with it, but all mine work fine with everything but the 7800. They act like the buttons (could be one but I think its both) are always pressed and it has this turbo effect that makes it unusable for some games and no fun for the rest. I know there are control pads made for the 7800 but I haven't really looked into the much that is the next step but I would like another option in case those are too hard to find or too much money to spend right now. I also know I have seen NES controllers modded to work for the 7800 but I haven't seen too much information. I haven't done too much research yet so some of this might be a little off but I thought I would ask people that know and maybe save myself some more "your Genesis controllers will work" style aggravation. Austin #2 Posted February 19, 2011 (edited) The Genny pads should work fine. Not sure why it's acting like perma-auto fire though. That's strange.. unless you're using a third-party turbo controller and you're not telling us something. The NES-7800 pads are a good investment. Sellers here could probably hook you up with one at a decent price. Or you could go to eBay. I think I saw one there recently for about $20. I personally do not care for the Euro 7800 pads. Buttons are spaced too far apart and the D-Pad isn't as accurate as other d-pads of the day are, not to mention it feels weird to me (others will disagree). *edit: Couldn't decide on what I wanted to say, so I said three different things and you probably read each edit, haha. Actually what I'm reading now says they don't work perfectly. Read this! That is all over my head a bit, but it seems to suggest it doesn't work right by itself. I'm going to be looking into buying a few NES pads to mod, or some pre-modded pads in our market place soon I guess. For now I should go to bed. fiddlepaddle #4 Posted February 19, 2011 I use a Genny joystick (three buttons), which works for most games fine if they only require one button. I use the regular 7800 stick if I need two buttons. Also, I've read it's possible to modify the Genny stick so the second button works, fairly easily (needs a resister, I think), but I've never tried it. +GroovyBee #7 Posted February 19, 2011 Maybe you should put an ad in the wanted section asking for two button controllers that have been modded for 7800 use.
The_Laird #8 Posted February 19, 2011 Personally I love the Euro-Pads and the scew in thumb stick is great for games where you need to move around quickly
jaybird3rd #9 Posted February 19, 2011 I've still got enough parts on hand to build one or two RSI 7800 joysticks, if you're interested. I never really liked using gamepads with 2600/7800 games, since these games were really designed for the joystick. The CX-78 gamepads in particular are a bit on the "cheap" side and tend to get stuck. I had a few new ones for a while, but I didn't enjoy using them, so I eventually sold them off.
