Space Harrier (when its completed) will be among the absolute best games ever made on the ATari 8-bit.

Tempest Extreme, to me, does not have the same feeling as Tempest did in the Arcade.. But its better than any previous attempts on the ATari..

I thought Tempest Extreme was quite interesting, until I saw it didn't support paddle control. Or, it would have been cool to have it support, say, the 2600 Driving Controller. If I want to play Tempest with compromised digital control, I have so many choices already, that I lost interest.

Last I saw of Space Harrier was a video a year or two ago. It looked really good. I watched a video of Tempest Xtreem last night and was blown away by how great it looked and sounded (love the soundtrack and digitized sounds). As well it looked very smooth. It looks and sounds so much better than the earlier 8bit Tempest. I am told by one person that the joystick control works pretty well. Like the previous poster said it wood be cool if it supported the 2600's driving controllers (however hard they are to obtain). Paddle control would be okay but it seem to me it would change the gameplay because you'd have to go back and forth, you couldn't keep rotating in one direction. So I am enchanted by the videos of both of these games, especially Tempest Xtreem, but I haven't played them yet.

Tempest lacks two things in my opinion. One: a pause button. Two: more challenge / variation... Once you are in the winning flow the game keeps going and appears not to get any harder. As soon as you get to this point, you will lose interest in this version of tempest... At least I did.
