Homemade Arcade Coffee Table

Recommended Posts

Fellas,

I always wanted to have an Arcade machine at home, but with limited space I never actually went for it. Then one day in Walmart I found this All-in-one arcade game, which contained the famous classic Namco games, like Pacman, Galaga, Galaxians etc. It have arcade style joystick and microswiched buttons. I made me thinking... Then on AtariAge, in "Marketplace" same game system is for sale, so I got it. My idea is, lets make it a stand alone system, my favorite was coffee table style. Then, when searching for idea on the web for a design, I found this blog http://mamenetbook.blogspot.com/. Great idea, nice table, IKEA store nearby (well... 100 miles away). Design process starten, got the All-in-one, took it apart. Very easy to add real arcade joystick and buttons. On Ebay, got me real arcade joystick, buttons with LED, and Composite to VGA adapter. I have a old 15in Dell Monitor, fits perfectly in the table. For audio, I used USB amplified speakers, I gut out the electronics and installed it inside it. There was suppose to be glass on top, but the glass is high tempered, so I cant cut it. I will add it later. To make a long story short: Here it is!!!

Nice job! Beats the heck out of paying over 2 grand for an official Namco multi-game arcade machine. :-)

Freaking AWESOME!icon_mrgreen.gif

So what was the total cost?

Let's see...

Table - $75

Gas to get table $20

Arcade joystick $20

Arcade buttons (they light-up when ON) $15

Namco All-in-one games $30

Monitor was free, you can get it on EBAY for $15-25

Speakers were free, common PC speakers

Composite to VGA converter $38

Power strip $10

aluminum Edge $10

Extra wood for the bottom $10

Misc screws, nails, hinges, magnets, I'm not sure

5V DC power supply for the game, free from wireless adapter

Black paint, $3 for a sample.

Now.. the viewing angle is not that great, but I'm not playing it that much. When a Galaga bug comes on me, then it's ready for auction.

There are others who make arcade tables from IKEA, just type "IKEA arcade table" in google under pictures search, you'll see.

This is very cool! You could upgrade it to a real arcade board pretty easy. Those 60 in 1 boards can run off an old pc power supply and output vga. So you could hook it right up to your monitor. Board is around $100. Jamma harness is maybe $15. Something to consider.

Be careful of what you buy. I used to want one of these.. they had a 1078 in 1 jamma board. The website that sold them discontinued them as they were unstable and unreliable. They said you're better off going with a real MAME setup.

Yeah all of the pc based multi-boards like the 1000's in 1 are terrible. Plus they have loud fans on the boards. The 60 in 1's are great though. Very good emulation and the sounds are perfect in most games.
