Dual Pokey issues

Recommended Posts

So I ordered another Simple Stereo Upgrade off of Lotharka along with an extra Pokey. Ironically, he had already put the Pokey on the board, and failed to get all the legs in the holes, thus one of them was bent. Needless to say I removed it and corrected it.

Anyhow. I installed the board (yes I've done one of these before and didn't fry my mobo this time), but when I turned on the system, the Power led faded in and out, and the system booted, but with no sound.

My first thought was that I screwed up, but to make sure I removed the board and replaced it with my old Pokey.

Everything booted up fine.

I then removed my Pokey and replaced it with a Ham Sandwich. As expected, no results.

After this I tried Lotharka's Pokey, and the Power Led again Flashed, and the system locked. It would no longer boot to the cursor.

I have a dead 600XL I picked up for $9.00 a while back, so I removed the Pokey fro it and put it into my 800XL, but it did the same thing as Lotharka's Pokey.

So what I am wondering is if the Pokey and or Ham Sandwich needs to be the same exact revision number as the Pokey that originally came with my 600XL, or if they are probably just dead?

Pokey's in the pic are the one's my 800XL does not like.

AFAIK there's no difference in Pokey "revisions".

The only difference you should be aware and careful of between those 2 chips is the location of the notch on the end - always remember, ignore the orientation of the printing, just make sure the notch at the end of the IC is pointed the right way when mounting it.

I noticed that the lettering on the one I received from Lotharka was inverted, but I didn't flip it as I figured that would be a bad move.

Again, the Atari ain't dead...

yet. ;)

It still works with the original Pokey.

Seriously though, do you think the other two Pokey's are dead?

Ohh, do you think my bad spelling might have some relation to my pokey problems? icon_wink.gif

Hehe, why not? :P

Slightly related. I just got a dual pokey upgrade from Lotharek too. Does anyone have installation instructions/photos/best practices?

FastRobPlus:

Simple. A4 connects to pin 13 of your CPU. Then you have your ground and left and right audio connectors right below the A4. Run them to our RCA or Guitar Jack female and that should be that. At least the last time I did it that's all it took. This time, it appears that I have problematic Pokey chips.

Sloopy: The Ham Sandwich did have a thin slice of Colby Cheese on it, though I've heard that Atari's are pretty resistant to Colby as opposed to other cheeses such as Limburger cheese.

24 should be good. Real thin Cheese strands. Though Metal or Sloopy may advice something else, they are better at this Cheese business than I.

duuuude... i only do mozzarella cheese... in general i dont like cheese... as a friend of mine once said, the whole reason i can eat mozzarella but no other is, it would be a sacrilege for a hacker to not eat a 'rotary debugger'...

so the problem isnt the gauge of cheese, its the type of cheese... when you use the wrong type it doesnt matter what gauge it is...

so you have completely screwed your turphid capacitor...

sloopy.

If you are smart, you'll use separate shielded wires for the 2 audio channels, and ground the shields. Doesnt matter what the thickness is.. anything 18ga or thinner is fine..

OH no! I hope I didn't fry my Flux Capacitor and Shield Generator as well. Do you think they'll be O.K.?

the wires from a PC that hooks the CD drive to the mobo/sound card are good if you get a decent one that is shielded...

You know.. When your name becomes a verb, it means that you have gained general recognition for one of two reasons:

Either you have repeatedly done something really kewl,

eg. "That dude Ollied clear over that park bench.. "

Or you have repetitively done something really STUPID..

eg. "Man.. That guy Syfo'd another Atari board!? What a fuk-tard!"

It's not funny. It's sad and sickening to most people in here..
