Reaperman #76 Posted March 7, 2011 (edited) I find that kind of hard to believe that anyone would give Empires such a bad view as to say to stay away from it. I don't think it's that hard to believe. Here's two from IGN I bought it with my N64 and it really soured me on the system. Because I bought it when I got my system, I was stuck with just that one game for a very long time. toptenmaterial #77 Posted March 7, 2011 If you don't already have it do yourself a favor and get Episode 1 Racer if you like racing games. I think its one of the best ones ever made for the N64. I really loved that game too, and was surprised to see IGN reviews of the ps2 sequel bagging on the N64 original. (link) For some reason, my copy of racer revenge won't load up on my main PS2, so I can't compare them. The only problem with the N64 one is that it required so much concentration that I would *regularly* forget to blink until it became painful. I still remember that over a decade later. Helluva game. I loved that game....really still do, except for that one level where you're racing in a cloud city (maybe it is 'Cloud City'....I have no idea). I could not, for the life of me, stay on the track. Made me so damn mad. Can't remember if I already mentioned this, but the Dreamcast version of Episode 1 Racer is absolutely phenomenal!!
AtariLeaf #78 Posted March 7, 2011 Anyone have any opinion on Road Rash 64? I love that game on every system I've played and have been thinking about getting the N64 version. Visually it doesn't look very good but if the game play is solid that's the important thing.

+wood_jl #80 Posted March 8, 2011 Anybody play Wipeout 64? I'm a late fan of the series, but never tried that version. It's good. It doesn't seem any better than Wipeout XL on the Playstation; that game has PHENOMENAL PS1 graphics. The 64 version is pretty much the same (good!) but a little blurry. The Analog control is a plus, though. You can get analog control on the PS1, but you have to use a Negcon-compatible controller (etc) rather than just the N64 stick. So it's handier to have the N64 version, since you have an analog stick right there! I really like the Wipeout games. For some reason, I was disappointed in the one for PS2 (whatever it was called) back when it came out. I can't remember why. But Wipeout 64 is a good version, like the others of the generation. I haven't played it, but IIRC, it's a port of Road rash 3D from the PlayStation (one I don't recall hearing good things about).
A_Locomotive #83 Posted March 8, 2011 I find that kind of hard to believe that anyone would give Empires such a bad view as to say to stay away from it. I don't think it's that hard to believe. Here's two from IGN I bought it with my N64 and it really soured me on the system. Because I bought it when I got my system, I was stuck with just that one game for a very long time. Wow. Maybe its just that I'm such a huge fan of the franchise that I'm seeing it through rose tinted glasses. I honestly do think its a pretty good game. That review brought up some good points but overall I think its better then the review they gave it. Can't remember if I already mentioned this, but the Dreamcast version of Episode 1 Racer is absolutely phenomenal!! I've always wanted to try it but never owned a Dreamcast. My brother bought one recently though so maybe I can talk him in to getting it. Anyone have any opinion on Road Rash 64? I love that game on every system I've played and have been thinking about getting the N64 version. Visually it doesn't look very good but if the game play is solid that's the important thing. Honestly, the 3DO version blows every other version out of the water. It seriously does! I borrowed my buddies 3D0 way back when it was still being sold, let him borrow my PlayStation in exchange, man that was a fun few weeks, played Road Rash nearly non stop. In fact it totally over shadowed every other game he loaned me(8-10 I believe), so much so I can't recall the title of a single other game. It would almost be worth buying a 3D0 just smack an old lady with a chain from atop a Firecracker again.
AtariLeaf #84 Posted March 8, 2011 I have the PC version of Road Rash, is it not essentially the same as the 3DO version?

Wipeout 64 is one of those games I played growing up. Many of my friends love that one, even if they didn't play it back in the day! Other futuristic racers I like for the system are F-Zero X and Aerogauge

xg4bx #89 Posted March 9, 2011 No love for Body Harvest? I believe those fellas went on to make grand theft auto. I need to get back into the n64. It was my go-to in the mid 90s because I hated the ps1.

Visually it doesn't look very good but if the game play is solid that's the important thing. Awful, awful game. The Genesis games and the PS1 title are great, but the N64 game is a horrid looking 3D monstrosity.
+Cobra Kai #92 Posted March 9, 2011 N64 has an arcade perfect version of NBA Hangtime. It's the reason I bought the system back in 1996. One of my best friends has an upright of NBA Hangtime that we play regularly still today, and other than a very slight downgrade in resolution, the N64 port is exactly the same. +Cobra Kai #93 Posted March 9, 2011 DK 64 is the only game that requires expansion pack. Wrong. Zelda: Majora's Mask also requires it. Perfect Dark can run without it, but only with a few demo-like features. The full game requires the Expansion Pak. As for a must-have title that likely hasn't been mentioned, is Conker's Bad Fur Day. Obviously not for it's "mature" content, but because it is the most technologically impressive game on the N64. It is THE best looking game on the system. BFD has ridiculously well rendered textures, super long draw distances, excellent use of lighting and shadowing and probably the most impressive of all; Full voice acting. ON A CARTRIDGE SYSTEM BITCHES! And no there isn't like 10 spoken words, Conker 64 has a very generous amount of dialog, all fully spoken (they even still have speech bubbles for some weird reason). BFD has about the same amount of text in it as Banjo Kazooie, which definitely isn't something insignificant. Conker's Bad Fur Day is also one of the largest games ever made on N64, weighing in at 512Mb. Resident Evil 2 is also this size and perhaps one or two other Japanese exclusives. For comparison, the largest official, non-homebrew Neo-Geo game is 716Mb, which is King of Fighters 2003. Conker's isn't that great. In fact, it's just another in a long list of 3d platformers, that all bleed together on the system. You buy one, you've played them all. I didn't find the content of the game all that 'mature' either. It's more like what a little child thinks mature behavior is, like getting drunk and peeing on a fire. For a technically impressive title, I'd list Starcraft 64 as the most advanced game, it's another of the hefty cartridges, utilizes the expansion pak by unlocking the entire Brood Wars expansion within the game, and the fact that the entire Starcraft series is on this single cartridge is an amazing feat. Much more impressive than an anti-aliased farting squirrel.
