Rescue on Fractalus!

Recommended Posts

Tried to load my Rescue on Fractalus! on my XF551 today and got a disk error, did not boot to completion..

Pulled out my Atari 1050 disk drive and loaded fine and played fine :?

Any idea why disk would load on 1050 and not XF551 drive?

The XF-551 just said no . When it says no there isn't really much that can be done. Try talking to it in a calm and soothing voice.

Certain games don't load on the XF551 due to rotational rate differences, Rescue on Fractalus wasn't listed, but it's possible that's the culprit; From the a8 FAQ

Rotation rate: 300RPM. Since all other Atari-specific drives run at 288RPM,

this results in rare compatibility issues. Specifically, these commercial

disks do not load in, and can be damaged by, the XF551:

- Flight Simulator II (subLOGIC)

- Blue Max (Synapse)

- Bank Street Writer (Broderbund). Conflicting reports about this one.

Do other games load ok in the XF? if not could be cold solder joints on the SIO sockets (notorious issue with the XF551)

Lastly if you are loading it on a 130XE there are Caps inside the 130 on the SIO line that are better removed.

Yeah, if you have a 130xe, definitely remove the caps (little green ones next to the SIO port, on the motherboard) That will make the XF551 spit and sputter and do all kinds intermittant crap.

Also, you may try replacing the ROM in the XF551 with the latest version which has the "timing bugs" fixed, or even replace it with the HyperXF ROM which adds additional 1050 compatability (especially where ultraspeed is concerned)..

I dont have any original disks that wont load on my XF drives.. but I dont have an original Rescue on Fractalus..

Interesting. Yeah the xf551 green light goes on and off and keeps looping trying to load without success. I'll stick to my 1050 or actually try to load with my indus gt and see what result I get..

...other games work that I have...this is the only one that it went K-razy on :D
