Is there a difference between PAL and NTSC Activision Boxes?

Recommended Posts

Other than the PAL sticker, are there any other differences between the boxes?

If I have a Grand Prix loose and a manual, if I get a PAL box, would that make exactly the same as CIB NTSC Grand Prix game?

It would make things a bit easier you see... icon_wink.gif icon_mrgreen.gif

I cant speak for all activision games, but many pal boxes have PAL printed on the spine of the actual box. HERO comes to mind. Not sure about grand prix..

That helps, becuase it's the harder to get CIB games I was actually talking about. For instance, Double Dragon is on Ebay every 5 minutes boxed PAL. Those are more the type I was looking for. Beamrider, Ghostbusters... the later boxes, not so much the standard.

It's tough to tell for many of these games because we don't have scans of many boxes. Rom and I have been seeking as much help as possible. He documents exactly which game came in which box on Atarimania. So for instance, if a black label version of Grand Prix came in a box with the PAL sticker, he'll put that exactly in the black label version. He's very thorough with his information. I don't go into detail like that since it would be redundant. My site I just list the box and describe it as such. I don't say exactly which cartridge came in it. Sometimes I don't even know. I buy many boxes without cartridges.

PAL boxes were smaller, see Fishing Derby (German) next to a PAL game in a US sized box (with Decathlon onwards they resized to 'normal' sized box):

Many early titles had a German title on the box (yellow sticker on the front and on the tope of box Fishing Derby eg Schneller als der Hai, meaning 'faster than the shark')

Some of the international edition boxes were smaller, but not all were PAL carts as these were sometimes released in Canada with NTSC carts.
