Duplicating my Disks.

Recommended Posts

I'm sure there is a tread out there on this but what is the best/fastest way to copy/backup my disks?

I'm using Chipmunk 3.0 and it's a lot faster then using Dos 2.5 but is there anything better?

Using APE is probably quickest.

Do a batch of dups to ATRs on the PC using a DOS or program that supports fast I/O to the PC-side emulated drive.

Once you've copied everything, dup back from ATRs to blank floppies.

Stuff like RAM size and program used becomes less important then because you're not swapping disks all the time.

If you're not using a PC I use MyCopyr2.1 which is nice as it supports the extra RAM on the 130XE to do single pass copies most of the time :) In fact I use this with APE too :D

Quickest I've ever used on my setup, a home made single chip SIO2PC, and using AtariSIO on a linux box, was Bibosoft SectorCopy 1.5.

It support RAM disks for single-pass, but also, it writes out the copy at a ridiculous speed. It's the only one I've used (Im sure there are others) that for whatever reason, writes this fast to an emulated disk drive, with no monkeying around.

The only thing I don't like, it will bomb off if it encounters sectors it can't read, would rather it continues on to the end of the disk, even with errors, like the Happy Backup software...but for clean disks its all good.

Oh also, think it's in polish (not hard to use though), and came originally with a hardware mod for the 1050..

BibiSoft Sector Copy is part of the software package around BiboDOS and the 1050 Speedy hardware enhancement from former Compy Shop, Germany. Today the rights with all former Compy Shop products is with ABBUC e.V. (www.abbuc.de).

You will find it on the Speedy System Disk (ABBUC Public Domain #0649). It is one of the fasted copiers on standard systems. If you happen to run a speedy 1050 (all versions) in your 1050 fdd you may use the "HSS Copier" from the same disk providing even more speed (it is said up to 95,000 bd, but I cannot measure it) when copying from/to 1050 speedy drives. It supports 2 at the same time reading the source while formatting the destination drive. You will find information in German on the system disk together with other well known and often ripped off tools like "Speed Start Initializer", "Speedy Backup", "Disk Mapper", etc.

And no, it doesn't simply bomb off, one can skip unreadable sectors. Check it out ...

I'm sure there is a tread out there on this but what is the best/fastest way to copy/backup my disks?

I'm using Chipmunk 3.0 and it's a lot faster then using Dos 2.5 but is there anything better?

I'm thinking of two things you want to do.

1. copy copy protected disks from originals, that's why you're using Chipmunk.

2. copy non-copy protected disks.

Seems like I remember you had to do a sector copy of copy protected disks, with, say, Disk Wizard II and then Chipmunk just

added some cracking code to the copied disk. The bad sectors don't copy.

So, I'm suggesting Disk Wizard II. 2.5 or 2.1

Oh, and there's another way, if you want. Use APE PRO interface and make PRO images that will boot using APE. PRO images you can't use except with APE PRO interface, I think.

Hmmm... I don't remember what Chipmunk did. It has a list of software disks that you can crack, and maybe it also does a partial sector copy, in which case you may be better off just using Chipmunk.

There's also 'Black Patch' from Bob Puff, which was/is copy protected, but like everything else has been cracked. I think Chipmunk was not copy protected to start with. To use Black Patch, tho, you have to have a list of the programs it cracks.

Which brings up the question....'Why make cracked copies, they've already been cracked?'

Yes. I'm very pleased with Chipmunk Software. I've copied original disks that went bad and having a backup really helps! It's a 2 sided disk. Front has the "codes" the back has the software to do the copying. It's very easy to use and copying disks very fast. Don't have to be a "techy" to use :D (see pic)

I see yours is from Alpha Systems. Mine is simply copyright 1986 Eli Tomlinson, microdaft.

I'm guessing yours is the newer one.
