toptenmaterial #76 Posted March 26, 2011 Desert Falcon on 2600, judging depth is impossible. Strangely enough the 7800 version is awesome!
Cynicaster #77 Posted March 26, 2011 Xevious- its really just mind numbing on every level. Ok so different strokes for different folks, but you can't be serious. Xevious is one of the worst games you've ever played?

Xevious is one of the worst games you've ever played? Not any weirder than picking "Super Mario Bros." and "Super Mario World". If those games are the worst you've ever played, then you need to play more games. More BAD games, like Friday the 13th and Super Noah's Ark 3D.

Xevious is one of the worst games you've ever played? aesthetically I find the grey/brown/green color palatte unpleasant and the sound effects are just migraine inducing, if they got any more piercing or higher pitched only dogs could hear them. It also has no personality, everything just screams "generic spaceship game" to me. I understand its considered a classic but imo it should have been lost to the sands of time.
NE146 #81 Posted March 27, 2011 (edited) everything just screams "generic spaceship game" to me. It can't be generic when there really wasn't much else like it around. Well.. while I understand Xevious hasn't really aged too well (it wouldn't be my first choice of game to play today ) the game was pretty unique & new feeling in 1982. Especially with the forest graphics & shadowing which seemed nearly photorealistic at the time. And the ability to bomb things that leave craters, and of course the secret flags to find. I'd say it more innovated on, & furthered the popular shooter genre at the time rather than being another cookie cutter game .. unless of course you're looking at it with retrospective glasses knowing all the similar games that followed it. For example, Terra Cresta didn't come out until a couple years later. Edited March 27, 2011 by NE146
Jess Ragan #82 Posted March 27, 2011 Xevious was a big hit in Japan... it pretty much started that whole vertically scrolling shooter genre, and had more sequels than I can count. The 7800 version, from what I can recall, was a pretty solid conversion, and much better than its tepid NES counterpart. Now on the OTHER hand, the Bandai/Namco NES conversion of Galaga was pretty sharp, while Gencom's 7800 game was buggy and stiff. Didn't it crash after ten stages? That's what I heard, anyway... I couldn't stay awake that long. I'd like to nominate Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde for this dubious honor, along with "Super" Pitfall, that cruel joke played on the Pitfall legacy. Dr. J and Mr. H was a painful slog with a pathetic milquetoast so wimpy he could only kill wasps. Anything larger than a cricket would toss him around the screen like a ragdoll until he hulked out, turning into Mr. Hyde. Then the game gets sort of tolerable, but only until you learn that going farther with Hyde than with Jeckyl results in an instant game over. The game actively punishes you for trying to enjoy it! It was like one of those experiments where the rat gets shocked every time it tries to pick up a food pellet.
DickNixonArisen #83 Posted March 27, 2011 Yeah, Xevious is still playable these days and was certainly groundbreaking. It's a little hard in my opinion, depending on version. Super pitfall, bleh. That's a good call. The genesis shadow of the beast is pretty bad, nowhere near worst, but it rarely gets the hate that it does deserve.
Tr3vor #84 Posted March 27, 2011 I find Xevious as dull as staring at a wall.
Cynicaster #85 Posted March 27, 2011 Taking the general progression of games from the past to the present, I'm not much of a shooter fan. Not at all. But still, the first time I played Xevious, I had never played anything else quite like it. The 7800 version was my favorite. For years after, whenever I saw a vertically scrolling shooter, I always compared it to Xevious in my mind, because to me Xevious is essentially the prototype for so many games that came later. DickNixonArisen #86 Posted March 28, 2011 Yep. And, it had an adaptive skill feature as well as a large, impressive boss and memorable music. The real feature in Xevious is the dual-plane idea; that's what I use to differentiate a xevious-type from any other top-down. It was a little slow, though, as I said perhaps too difficult overall. Galaga 7800 doesn't crash after 10 stages (and you can start at that point).
cimerians #88 Posted March 28, 2011 Atari 2600 Football. I was sooo disappointed with the original Football. Flickering nightmare. Ugh.... Intellivision Some dumb ass sumbmarine game I cant remember the name of it or maybe that Skiing game. Atari 5200 Congo Bongo. Garbage. Colecovision Illusions. Only cause as a kid I didnt "get" it. NES - On the NES it was a game with a fat guy who spit fireballs. I cant remember the name of the game. But for me it was horrid. I remember renting many stupid games from local video stores back in the day to play NES games. SNES - All the Y's games were crap. Genesis Sega CD - Nighttrap was it? Modern A game called Wet on the PS3\360 and too many Wii games to mention.

I read on Sega 16's forums that the JP Megadrive version is much better. I saw a youtube video and it looks much smoother with more animation frames and better graphics. DickNixonArisen #93 Posted March 30, 2011 Karnov isn't that bad... honestly, some of the worst games I've played are non-localized famicom games that I got on ebay for a dollar or two plus shipping. Mahjong, dice puzzles, glitchy and bizarre platformers, slot machine games, horse race betting (not racing) games. Pong itself is fun, but some of the variations in ripoffs were pretty awful; I've never played astrocade or channel F games but I bet a few of them are pretty damn bad; odyssey games aren't great (mostly). And, you know, heritage aside, OXO isn't fun. Tennis for two was supposedly pretty popular at the time, never played it of course. Spacewar was popular... Anyway, I guess my point is that one of the first is probably one of the worst; it only makes sense that you have to crawl before you can fly around and shoot lazors.
