ATARI7800fan #1 Posted March 17, 2011 Just wondering what are your guys opinion of the 3DS and to some extent the Wii. I will admit I ended up getting a Dreamcast, then a Xbox 360 because I felt dissapointed with the Gamecube. I had grown up with the SNES which is a system that had a good amount of the 3rd party support and felt like a system that had something for everyone. Then the gamecube come along and I will admit I was dissapointed with Nintendo and decided to give someone else a try(too bad my second choice did not last long either.) Then I see the launch line up for the 3DS and it seems like it is the SNES all over again, they have a game for every genre. I have also recently got a Wii because of the fact they are releasing games more for the older generation now. So what is your guys opinion of the 3DS games so far. Rex Dart #2 Posted March 17, 2011 3DS looks promising, but I wonder what list you're looking at... the launch kinda stinks apart from Street Fighter. I'm all over that, though... finally a decent fighter for a nintendo handheld. Wii is awesome, too. Plenty of great games of all types on it. Try Wario Land Shake It or whatever it's called... made by the same folks that made Buster Busts Loose on the SNES & it shows.

Reaperman #4 Posted March 17, 2011 (edited) Neither 3ds nor Wii have much software that really targets me as a customer, so my opinion of the pair of them is quite low. It's a shame since both have the hardware to create excellent gaming experiences for me. As with previous DS incarnations, I dislike the ergonomics and overall design of the 3ds (2 screens and a hinge), but do hope that somebody will see its amazing potential for cockpit spaceflight games. Though since nobody has really done that in the last half decade of DS systems, my hopes are pretty low. A shame, since no other game system would be able to do them nearly as well as a DS. With wii I had always hoped for more mouse-heavy strategy games in front of the big screen. That mostly hasn't happened, and with a few exceptions the system has been targeting the opposite end of the gaming spectrum which are all on ADHD drugs. Menu navigation is my favorite part of the Wii hardware--it makes such a good mouse pointer. I really haven't liked 1st party Nintendo titles since somebody decided it would be a good idea to draw them in 3d and allow them to speak. Even the best of classic Mario games would have been totally ruined if he spoke. Sorry to say, but we're getting to the point where the 1st party titles are the only significant reason to buy Nintendo hardware, and I just can't make myself get into it. As always, I can see real promise in Nintendo hardware, and am hoping that somebody gives me a 'killer app' for one of them. late edit: 3DS Shadow Wars seems to be trying to appeal to me. I don't know if I'd consider it a killer-app level title, but it sure looks like it might be neat to try out. It reminds me of Shadow Watch, an early Tom Clancy game that I enjoyed quite a bit. xg4bx #7 Posted March 17, 2011 As to the topic I'm most excited by the resident evil games so far but if there's a Conduit title ill keep my eye on that too. I'm not wetting my pants over the launch line up,what has me excited is the potential the 3ds has ie augmented reality, netflix streaming, etc.
godslabrat #8 Posted March 17, 2011 I just played with a 3DS. It's... nice. Not $250 worth of nice, but nice. The 3D effect does work, though only within a very narrow viewing angle, and only so long as you keep your head the same distance from the screen. Shaking the system will break the effect for you. I'm definitely waiting for a price drop or a much better selection of games.
liveinabin #9 Posted March 17, 2011 Had a go with one. It's OK. I mean, it's 3D and it's a handheld with, it seems, roughly the same graphical prowess as the iPhone. Still remains to be seen whether the usual Nintendo effect will happen again - ie. Promise of strong third-party support that doesn't last, in quality at least, while the same first-party IPs (that you either love or hate) roll out steadily. Personally, I'm done with Mario, Zelda et al. so I'm not expecting much long term value from this console.
Rex Dart #10 Posted March 17, 2011 I'm looking forward to some mind-bending puzzle games. Picross 3D on the DS was awesome, and I'm pretty excited about the possibilities of the 3DS.

I just recently looked at the specs and actually the GPU's max speed is almost twice the speed of the Wii. I tried it today and will admit I was surprised with how well the 3D work. Reminded me a lot of the 3D movies they have had lately. Doesn't poop out like in amusement parks but does add that extra sense of depth like in movies. The main thing I notice is that it has to be within 14 inches of the front of a person's face to get the full effect, any farther and it starts to lose clearness. Maybe not worth 250, more like 200 would be fine.

Just curious; how would you have designed a two-screen handheld's form differently? This question wasn't addressed to me, but there are two aspects of the DS which drives me nuts. 1) The ergonomics are horrible. Smooth contours that a hand was meant to hold, and buttons easier to reach would have done wonders. 2) The split screens. I don't know if it needs to be split screen, actually. Most games don't seem to utilize this aspect of the DS. But my major problem is that they are positioned vertically. Our eyes are better with horizontal images, not vertical. These split screens make some games, for me, nearly impossible to play. Bomberman, split between the two screens is completely awful. The touch screen was a nice innovation for a hand-held. The 3D, potentially, could be really cool in the next gen. But I don't see the split screens being particularly useful outside of gimmickry.
Austin #13 Posted March 18, 2011 ...But I don't see the split screens being particularly useful outside of gimmickry. For the most part I prefer the single large widescreen of the PSP, but two screens can be nice.. It really depends on the games though. You are right that a lot of games do not support it in an efficient or interesting manner. Some games do, though (the Castlevania games used one for gameplay, and a choice of one as a map screen or an items/inventory/status screen, extremely useful for the nature of the game); Contra 4 makes interesting uses a vertical aspect ratio, the first Contra (IIRC) to do so since the original arcade games). Reaperman #14 Posted March 18, 2011 (edited) Just curious; how would you have designed a two-screen handheld's form differently? I'd rather not design or hold a double-screened handheld to start with. Were I tasked with creating one I would simply quit my job. The one scenario where I see the DS form as superior to the Gameboy form factors is in cockpit spaceflight games. To my knowledge none of the DS systems have one, so it's a good thing that I've stocked up on new GBM systems. It's going to be another half decade of this. Chris Leach #16 Posted March 23, 2011 IMHO i don't like them.....I would rather have my Atari and play the games......the 7800 holds priority over my tv gaming time and then the NES....the games are childhood memories and those memories were good! I don't know how the kids today will say somehting like "Hey remember when I was 5 and we played New Super Mario Bros...?" What about the Old Super Mario Bros.? Kids don't seem to look at the roots and where games come from......show them Mario on the Atari and they SHat themselves...
