No Mortal Kombat 9 Thread?

I picked up the skins pack. I have the PS3 version. The skins pack for me is a must only because I like those old costumes. :P

I'm not paying for things that should be unlockable anymore. Remember when you could unlock new characters by beating the game? Remember when you could use cheat codes to unlock even more characters, like the bosses and such? Remember those days? Those were the days.

Just. Not. Doing. It. Anymore.

Yeah but you can still do that in the new MK. I won't spoil it for you but there are multiple unlockable characters in the game, and every character has costumes you can unlock as well. (In addition to art and music tracks)

I do wish you could get everything for free in this world, but you just can't.

This type of thing is no different then the micro transactions on other popular online games. (Think Farmville cash)

Is it a requirement to play through the game? No

Is it a requirement to play others online? No

Is it an option to purchase if you so choose? Yes.

Remember back in the day when you couldn't take a console online? Those days are long, long gone.

For the sake of discussion, would you state specific examples of these older games which you consider superior in content offerred for the original MSRP?

I'll just toss out Soul Calibur, Soul Calibur 2, and Marvel Vs Capcom 2 to start the list - in terms of being able to unlock a lot of extra content by just playing the game rather than handing an extra 10-30 dollars to the developer for a temporary copy of your paid bonuses.

I don't even recall there being a Dreamcast marketplace where a consumer could have bought additional characters if they wanted to.

I'll leave someone else to do a comparison with Marvel Vs Capcom 2. I'm sure it will compare well.

I'll do Soul Calibur 2.

MK has 27 playable characters. SC2 has 20. Both have unplayable boss characters, but MK has more of those too. SC2 has a few other random guys, but they're really just alt costumes for existing characters.

Only PS3 MK players get Kratos. No matter what version of SC2 you buy, you're screwed out of two characters.

Each MK character has 2 costumes available with no DLC. SC2 characters have 2 as well. I think a few characters in SC2 have 3.

MK has more gameplay modes and parallels for all of SC2's modes. MK's Story mode is a hands down winnner here. MK also has co-op and competitive tag team modes which SC2 lacks.

I'm assuming we're grading solely on the content with the game disc, a console, and some controllers, so the fact that MK has an online mode while SC2 doesn't is irrelevant for this discussion.

But this is also comparing the best of the best. Would someone like to compare MK to Bloody Roar 3? How about a comparison with Street Fighter II for the SNES? N64's Killer Instinct? Criticom? Marvel Super Heroes? Virtua Fighter 4?

I'm not sure if Hateful Gravey holds this game in high regard, but where is the bitching for the lack of content in Tatsunoko Vs Capcom: Ultimate All Stars? After all, it only has 26 playable characters, the bare minimum of no-frills game modes, and no alternate costumes outside of pallette swaps. I haven't seen anyone bitching about the lack of content on that one. Oddly, it only seems to be a complaint when DLC is available, regardless of what is available on the disc.

Hell, people bitched about Darth Vader in SC4 for the 360, and he was a single DLC option in a game with 40+ characters on the disc and a character creator to boot!

I didn't, I bought him and I'm glad I did because I beat your virtual hiney with him one time.

That made it worth every penny. :D

I second wanting the Jason DLC. They could model him after the Ps3 exclusive Kratos. They both have big melee weapons. I loved the flick Jason Vs Freddy, I'd love it even more to be able to PLAY Jason Vs Freddy.

Oh and I agree with Gabriel completely unexpected. I was speculating but didn't see that coming! LOL

Freddy, dude, you're late to MK vs DC. That was the shitty one. This was supposed to be the good one.

Ash and some Cenobites would be fun to play as too. I was always fond of The Chatterer. And Freddy has a lot of cool moves.

Thats not nice. My opinion isn't uncommon, infact I expected more folks to agree with me. Its cool that you don't, but you don't have to act like I'm over reacting or something. You can state that you disagree with me without being condescending.

All true, and well put.

Tekken is the one that comes to mind that was very good at rewarding multiple play throughs. Also, Mortal Kombat first used this krypt idea to hide unlockable characters.

Sorry I didn't reply to any of you earlier. I honestly expected that mine would be a more popular opinion. I guess its just not worth as much to me as it is to some.

I guess that online multiplayer has taken fighting games from single player mastery and having friends over or meeting at the arcade to smash their head in. Now its all about playing online all the time and competing with people all the time. I haven't had the time to master a fighting game like that since middle school so I can't bother with online play. So when they take the unlockable characters away I start to lose the need to play through more then once or twice.

I have beaten the game and was actually thrilled to unlock the stuff that I did. The story mode for this game was very very cool and I'll be playing through that again just for giggles soon. Over all I'm pleased with the game.

Aside from all of that, are there more characters coming? Can we expect a character pack some time in the future that allows for a discount in purchasing multiple characters? Maybe another disc release with the new stuff on a disc? I would rather buy the entire game again to have it all on disc for the future then buy DLC.

I seen that today, and I absolutely love it. I'm buying the game and this DLC asap.

I've played through the standard arcade on normal first time playing it. Picked up smoke, no time in practice mode and I did a few 5-6 hit combos, including specials, on my own, on a regular controller.

I can't wait to give this a serious try on an arcade stick.

Guessing you're not a Freddy fan Rex?? LOL

I don't like or dislike the character... but this is Mortal Kombat, not MUGEN.

If I could I would give you +10 for that one. I said something like this when they put that certain character in the PS3 version that has NO BUSINESS in my Mortal Kombat game. Freddy fits better and I still don't want him in there.

Also, why does he have 2 gloves? I could almost be down with him being there if he just had the one glove. This version screwed up the one thing that everyone knows about Freddy.

I think I understand. Kinda like Rex thinks MK Vs DC is shitty I'm guessing because they crossed the MK franchise with another franchise and it doesn't sit well with some because it doesn't "fit" with the MK storyline? Those other characters don't belong so to speak. I personally don't mind seeing these cross franchise's. The longer they keep one franchise going the more ridiculous the characters and convoluted the back story becomes. GI Joe in the 80's is a good example. By the end of the toy run the new characters were silly and getting redundant I thought. I went from loving GIJoe to thinking it was dumb. Maybe rather then keep throwing lame new MK characters at us, they are trying to appeal to fans of other franchises? I dunno. I do know I personally don't care about back stories or keeping in check with some fictional continuum. I think kicking some ass with Freddy sounds like a blast and that's the only reason I'm glad they made him playable, even if he doesn't have anything to do with MK. I just want to have some fun.

No; it was shitty because it was shitty. Having Scorpion fight Superman was just icing on the fecal mound.
