Original KMK/JZ with the 800XL?

Recommended Posts

I have the original KMK/JZ design adapter. The only changes I've made was to add a cartridge adapter (solder holes in the board were already there). But this is an XE-only design. Has anyone adapted this to the 800XL? If so, could you post some pics and briefly explain how you did it?

Also, I've never seen any good close-up pics. of the IDEa and it's adapter(s). (I'm aware of the internet store pic.) Could someone post some pics of the device and the adapter(s)?

Thanks,

Larry

OK. Take a bench vice, a 50-way card edge connector, and a length of 50-way SCSI cable. Trim the header connector off one end of the SCSI cable, and then carefully separate pairs of insulated wires, maybe so they separate an inch or so from the end of the cable. You'll end up with 25 pairs of wires, each still bound together by the insulation. Taking - say - four pairs at a time, twist each pair around so the left and right wires are reversed (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 becomes 2, 1, 4, 3, 6, 5, 8, 7) and carefully line them up at the same pitch as the original unseparated cable (this is the hard part: you may find placing the twisted pairs on the adhesive side of a small strip of sticky tape helps get the pitch right, and helps keep them together). Once this is done, put the four pairs of wires over the little forked pins under the cover of the edge connector, and tighten the whole thing up in the vice. Then take the cover off the edge connector, check everything lined up correctly, and proceed to the next four pairs of wires. If everything didn't line up correctly, you have to pull the whole thing apart, trim the cable back and start again.

Hi Jon-

Thanks for your nice, clear explanation of how you made your cable. That is quite useful, but I was asking if anyone has connected the original KMK/JZ device to an 800XL. I presume you have an IDEa which is a little different. IIRC (from an eBay auction long ago), the IDEa has a header that attaches to the ECI connector for the XE models. The ECI adapter is not shown on the net pictures (that I have found, anyway) but here is a picture of the header end of the board: http://afs.atari.org/Support/how_to_connect_IDEa_controller_inside_Atari.pdf

And you have adapted the header to the PBI connector on the XL. (?) My apologies if I have not understood you correctly.

Ah - my apologies Larry. I still get the various models confused (KMK/JZ, IDEa, etc), and I'm not the only one. I wasn't sure which model I had bought until I opened the box. :)

Anyway: that's a useful link. You are correct: basically, I have manufactured an extension cable which means connection to the XL can be achieved without even disconnecting (at the IDEa end) the cable which normally runs between the header on the IDEa PCB and the header on the XE adapter. One simply disconnects the XE adapter from the end of the cable, and plugs in the XL connector. This is essential for me, since my IDEa is housed in a sealed box.

Were did you get it, Larry? Do you know, that only 15 (fifteen) copies were released?

No, this was not one of the original run -- I should have said it is "original design" as opposed to IDEa.
