Opinion of the Nintendo DS and star fox command

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what are people's opinions of the Nintendo DS, are there certain game types that do not work well on the DS, what games would you recommend getting for it. Which version is the best. Also what are people's opinion of Star Fox Command. I have seen some gameplay lately and it has me intrigued. Thanks for your opinions.

First person shooters do not work well on the DS. Using Metroid Prime Hunters as an example, the default setup has you using the stylus to aim, using L to jump and the d-pad to move and strafe. This leads to a very cramped setup that gets very uncomfortable quickly. Asides from that, most other genres seem to play well on the platform.

Star Fox Command is not a first-person shooter. It's a chase-cam space flight game.

Having said that, the game has much in common with the cancelled Star Fox 2 on the SNES. The gameplay is tactical in nature, as well as action. It's a good game, but it's not quite the pure shooter that the other Starfox games are known for. Not sure how that influences your opinion on the game. I actually liked it though.

If you have a flashcard for the DS.. then it's worth your time either finding a patched copy of Starfox, or getting the patch and applying it yourself to the game.

What it does is add D-Pad control to the game and it makes it 100% more enjoyable. You still have to use the touchpad to do some maneuvers, but it's fine.

Holy poop. I just went from zero interest in getting a flashcart to wishing I had one yesterday.

I like the control setup in Metroid Prime Hunters. If I recall correctly - jump is not L, it's a double tap on the touch screen, and it works well enough. The hands get a little cramped after a while, but its not a game I play in long bursts anyway. The aiming I find to be much more precise than Wii remote IR sighting.

As for Star Fox Command, I loathe the control setup. MPH bases your aim based on directional gestures with the stylus, rather than plotting your physical point of contact on the screen. SFC does the opposite - it is not gesture-based, instead the point of the screen you touch determines the way the ship steers. In effect, the screen becomes a giant analog stick minus the physical feedback of a real stick. Think Super Mario 64 DS - clunky and imprecise. Awful, in a word. I like that they went back and used the ideas from Star Fox 2, but I didn't have the patience to play through the game with awful control. SFC was my first DS game purchase, and 3 months later I sold it back to EB for 25 bucks. Avoid it and wait for the verdict on SF643D.
