gooch3008 #1 Posted March 30, 2011 I already have the version of chrono trigger that came on Final Fantasy Chronicles for PS1. I recently decided I wanted an actual SNES copy, so I have been browsing around a bit and the game has doubled in price on Amazon in like 2 weeks, wtf!? I don't like it when I get the urge to buy a specific game and the prices are crazy... It really went up a solid $30 for a used copy on amazon, from $38 to $68....argh... Rex Dart #2 Posted March 30, 2011 You can't be surprised... it's Chrono Trigger.
SoulBlazer #3 Posted March 30, 2011 Why not get the very good DS port?
MagitekAngel #4 Posted March 30, 2011 Agreed, DS port is a solid, conservative port, with extra content that doesn't get in the way of the original classic. As for the SNES game, well... it's coming out to Japanese Virtual Console, maybe it will make it here eventually...
Rex Dart #5 Posted March 30, 2011 Well, you can't play a DS port on anything bigger than a 3" screen. That's the main reason I get tired of DS games that try to offer a console experience; I just wind up wishing I could play it on my damn TV.
Austin #6 Posted March 30, 2011 I started Chrono Trigger on the DSi XL last week and it's pretty awesome, especially on the large screens.
PAC MAN FEVER #7 Posted March 30, 2011 Price of Chrono Trigger rises dramatically argh...right when I decide I want a copy. I hate that when it happens
tz101 #8 Posted March 31, 2011 I don't understand all the price gouging with classic gaming as of late, but feel really fortunate to have found my copy at Goodwill for 50 cents about a month back. Price says $1 but it was half off day at GW.
HatefulGravey #9 Posted March 31, 2011 GW never has video games around me. That place is full of broken stuff, cloths, and glasses. I still swing though once a week, because I know as soon as I stop they will get something great, but man its hard to keep going there sometimes. I need to work on my SNES collection in general, so this game being high doesn't kill me I guess. Then again I never thought it was the greatest game ever or anything anyway. Holy shit! Lucky find! My copy was given to me as a gift, so I can't complain
TheGameCollector #11 Posted March 31, 2011 One thing to note is that prices fluctuate with anything. The only CIB Tails Skypatrol on ebay a month ago was $150 + shipping. It was gone for a couple weeks following the earthquake & tsunami. Another one appeared just today and i bought it now for $77 shipped.
DickNixonArisen #12 Posted April 4, 2011 CT is a favorite for me; I found mine for ten quite some years ago at a flea market. I don't usually find it out there, and when I do, the dealer tends to know what he has and may even ask for more than it's really worth. The best solution I've found is usually to get into the Epoch and go back to when the game was cheaper.
Algus #13 Posted April 4, 2011 I would pay $70 for Chrono Trigger if I had to. It is just that good. Although the risky thing about buying SNES games these days is that the battery can be kind of dicey. Though I guess thats no big deal if you know how to replace them. Still, don't rely on just Amazon for pricing. I've found that sellers on Amazon tend to charge higher prices than elsewhere.

Very true, especially for anything that has a collector's following. I think a lot of Amazon sellers are looking for that one idiot buyer that has never heard of eBay or Craigslist. Chris Leach #15 Posted April 4, 2011 Chrono Trigger is a very common game. Great gameplay if you like the physics to role playing that it included upon its original release. Myself, I really enjoyed the Final Fantasy series and preferred Lufia 2 and Final Fantasy III over the Chrono Trigger game, but Chorno had the ability to replay the game with your end game stats so its a toss up in my book. Chrono used to be $100 strong no matter where you went....and there is still that awe that skids at game stores get when someone brings it in to trade in and they give them like $0.50 for trade in credit....that pisses me off.... But you got be a cheap to get profit in the game store industry or so thats what "They" say....
NE146 #16 Posted April 4, 2011 Well, you can't play a DS port on anything bigger than a 3" screen. You mean 4.2 inches Anyway in regards to Chrono Trigger.. heck play it on an xbox emulator or something. Bam.. done. I guess to me 30-60 bucks aint all that huge a price for a game considering I spent $50 for my copy of Chrono Trigger. But of course that was new in store when it came out. But still.. it aint like used copies are $200-$500 or something.

I really only have my DS for the Castlevania games, but I'm always thinking that same thing...
HatefulGravey #18 Posted April 5, 2011 I guess my only real problem with game pricing with the rarer games is the condition matters more as the price goes up. I've run into games like this in stores before with the label all but missing and they still want full price for the game. The logic is that the game still plays so it must still be worth that much, well thats not the case. If a car still runs fine but all the paint is missing and some kid wrote his name all over it there is going to be price difference. If I'm buying Tetris the label doesn't really matter too much, if I'm buying Chrono Trigger at $65 I want a good looking label or a reduced price. DickNixonArisen #19 Posted April 5, 2011 Yeah, I like to buy mangled but functional carts at lower prices, since i don't really collect for condition as long as it's working and not cut in half. I have a double dragon 2 cart that... well, let's just say that someone took the idea of a toaster NES literally. Still works, but looks like it wouldn't even fit. I got the SNES harvest moon for less than 20 off of ebay one time because it had been a rental and the video store actually melted ID numbers into the plastic of the cart. Turned out to be really small and on the back anyway.
CGQuarterly #20 Posted April 5, 2011 Buy a Super Everdrive. I just started playing Chrono Trigger on it last night. I have a real copy of the game, but this is easier. Chris
gooch3008 #21 Posted April 6, 2011 I broke down and bought a copy off amazon that appeared for $45 with a gift card I had. I wanted a nice label and this one has it. I believe a local shop sells this game for $35 (Cool Stuff in va beach) but they havent had a copy when I have visited in a looong time.
TheGameCollector #22 Posted April 6, 2011 Good that you have found one. I am thinking that a new local game store called D-Pad Gaming has a good chance of selling a cart-only copy if they are not already. They have fixed prices for their items and that means original NES system is $25, Dreamcast system is $20 and so on. One of the owners told me he sold an Atari Lynx to someone for $25 the other day and the person who bought it also paid for all the games he had for it except for one. I should keep my eye on that store.
82atari5200 #23 Posted April 6, 2011 I paid 15 bucks each for Super Mario RPG and Zelda back in 2002. The other day was in play n trade and super mario RPG was 44.99 and Zelda was 30.00 It's all about supply and demand.
HatefulGravey #24 Posted April 6, 2011 Buy a Super Everdrive. I just started playing Chrono Trigger on it last night. I have a real copy of the game, but this is easier. Chris Yeah I'm pretty sure the flash carts are going to become very high on my list as soon as I'm back to buying. (Arcadeguns.com cleared my spending cash for a while) They cost a bit, but they are worth it the more I think about it. I have avoided it because I thought it would take away the joy of collecting the real games but I think I can get around that. I think Harmony and the Sega flash cart have to be first though. I found Zelda at a local thrift store for $2 recently, and I got Mario RPG as a gift from a friend that had it as a child and found it in a box. I should be so lucky with a few other SNES games and I could be a really happy person.
