HatefulGravey #1 Posted April 9, 2011 I have spent a year now collecting 2600 almost exclusively. So I have a large number of games for it, and have gotten to the point that most games I don't own (or have coming to me early next week) are getting harder to find and pricey. I have Halo 2600 coming to me when Al finishes this run, and that has me thinking I need to get more home brew games. I have heard of a lot of great ones, and I know there are some great ones in the AA store. I do have questions for those that are already into this though. What sites sell homebrew games most often? AA has a bunch, but I know there are more out there. What games should I be getting to start this collection? How long does it take normally to get a game you order from the AA store? I'm sure they aren't in stock all the time so they have to be made and I have no idea what that really calls for. I'm interested in 2600 and 7800 home brews at this point, so please advise. Thank you for your time.
Thomas Jentzsch #2 Posted April 9, 2011 Sort the homebrews by sales. At least for the not brand new ones, this should give you a good start. Though IMO there are quite a lot really good homebrews which are getting less attendance than they should. Also you should have a closer look at the reviews. accousticguitar #3 Posted April 9, 2011 Gooddealgames has homebrews. I really don't know of any other sites that do. The nice thing about AA is oftentimes there are reviews you can read of the games before you buy them.
HatefulGravey #4 Posted April 9, 2011 I have been reading reviews and have found a few I'll get as soon as I get back to buying. I just thought I would ask for direct recommendations. Looks like Lady Bug is a must have for example. I have heard a lot about it from multiple places.

Nukey Shay #6 Posted April 9, 2011 Wolfenstein isn't a homebrew (tho it's probably the best-selling hack out there).

HatefulGravey #10 Posted April 10, 2011 Wolfenstein isn't a homebrew (tho it's probably the best-selling hack out there). Yeah I looked at the hacks here too. I'm going to have to get the Berzerk hack just because I love that game and I've heard good things about it. I'll probably end up with Adventure + as well. Thanks for the recommendations. Based on what I have read and what you have all said I think I'll order Lady Bug next week sometime and maybe that Berzerk hack.
zylon #11 Posted April 10, 2011 I quit buying the original games a couple years ago, except for my computers . I only buy homebrews, hacks, conversions, and some repros anymore. For 2600: Inv+, Wolfenstein, Seawolf, Stratogems, Vault Assault, Skeleton+, Space Treat, Halo, Marble Craze, Medieval Mayhem, Berzerk Enhanced, Galaxian Arcade, Sinistar, Xevious, Bloody Human Freeway, Pepsi Invaders, Spice Invaders, Chunkout 2600, Caverns of Mars, and more. Austin #12 Posted April 10, 2011 I can't recommend any, as asides from Halo 2600, I have only dabbled with 7800 homebrew. However, there is an AtariAge YouTube channel that has a lot of footage of the 2600 homebrews they sell here. I've seen quite a few that look good and I already have an idea of what I want to buy once I decide to pick some up.

Bloody Human Freeway would be a sweet one to have. I think about it every now and then, but have never actually tried to find a copy. I'll have to add it to the list just for the funny of it all. I figured I'd see if I could find some video reviews of home brew games and stumbled on a ton of these videos showing game play. Pretty sweet and helped me get a better idea of game play on some of these games.

Not sure if they are all in the store already, so his blog entry is a good starting point too.

DickNixonArisen #18 Posted April 11, 2011 Yeah, I didn't bother mentioning that it was a hack as Wolfenstein is different enough from venture to feel like a completely different game. I also have the abysmal abyss, which I like since I like venture so much, but it's not super-worthy. Someone mentioned medieval mayhem already, right? Nukey Shay #19 Posted April 11, 2011 Yeah, I didn't bother mentioning that it was a hack as Wolfenstein is different enough from venture to feel like a completely different game. I agree. I just posted the correction so that it can be found in the correct store listing

Where does one get a reproduction copy of Bloody Human Freeway? I know that Al has mentioned before he can do reproductions but its seems he is swamped with other things right now. Lord only knows how long the Halo list is right now. Gooddealgames has some interesting home brew and hack stuff for other systems as well. I might have to get that Final Fantasy II for the NES. I had a translated ROM but that just isn't the same.
