nes controllers?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering does anybody know. Did nes have any analog controllers or were they all digital including the original and dogbone. And also was nesmax analog or digital. One site said it was analog and one said digital.

Both are digital. If there is an analog NES controller, I'm not aware of it. I've taken apart and modded a couple hundred NES and MAX pads, and they are essentially the same animal.

There is technically one analog NES controller, which is the Arkanoid paddle, for use with Arkanoid.

I can't find it now. Just though I'd ask. Never really liked the d-pad. It should of been more rounded to move all directions. I used to use super controller addon but those broke all the time. I did find this interesting howevre.

This is how it should of been all along.

Wow, that is good. I'm going to have to try that on my NES - Atari mods and see how it feels.

I found it.

"The NES Max Controller has a small analog stick instead of the directional pad found on the original NES Controllers"

So it was analog I guess.

That controller is digital as well. The disc sorta slides around on top of the four contacts that make up the d-pad.

No, it's not. I know the guy that updates their website info. Let's just say that, well.. He generally uses popular "opinion" as fact rather than writing the descriptions based on actual fact and/or personal experience.

Arkanoid Vaus controller was analog for NES.

The rotation is converted into a serial digital data stream by the controller so it can be clocked into the NES. So its not actually analogue at the NES console end.

So then nes never accepted anything analog?

My guess is that for NES to accept analog input, the mainboard would have had to been designed with proper circuityr for analog signal reception. Since the NES came with digital controllers from the beginning, the circuitry was never designed to accept an analog controller signal.

Equate it to the Atari 5200 console. It was designed from the beginning as an analog machine, so it will accept those signals from analog controllers. If it would have been designed for digital controllers from the get-go (much better anyway in many people's eyes) then it would never have received analog input.

But what about VCS? It accepts both digital and analog signals. My guess is that Atari designed the main board for dual controller signal types. Colecovision is dual controller type capable. Nintendo did not allow us that benefit with the NES. :|

I always thought 2600 was digital only. Which controllers were analog?

The paddle is analogue with a digital fire button. The driving controller uses a simple digital encoder that must be read more frequently by the game than a standard joystick to determine direction and speed accurately.

What about 3rd party.

Apart from paddles (if there are sny) they are all digital I expect.

I don't know anything about the SMS motherboard so I can't help you with that question.
