Commodore 64 Video Problems

Recommended Posts

I've been attempting to get s-video output on a 15" LCD TV and a C64 without success. I'm using a 8-pin DIN to s-video cable purchased on eBay and I'm not getting any signal. I've tested the following connections:

C64 8-pin DIN -> s-video to 15" LCD TV: no signal

C64 RF -> 15" LCD TV using a RCA to coax adapter in the antenna input: very fuzzy, black and white picture that rolls downwards

C64 RF -> 19" CRT TV using a RCA to coax adapter in the antenna input: passable picture, but nowhere near as sharp as I'd like

C64 8-pin DIN -> borrowed 1702 with a monitor cable: perfect picture (as expected)

It also should be noted that I purchased a similar s-video cable from the same eBay seller for my Atari 800 and it works perfectly on the 15" LCD TV. I know the video output from the C64's monitor port isn't standard, but is it possible that some LCD TV's just will not work with a C64? Based on my testing, I'd assume the s-video cable I bought was suspect...but I got an extremely poor picture on the LCD TV using the RF output also.

If you have a multimeter handy, check continuity on the cable. From what you've described neither the C64 nor the TV seem to be the source of the problem, but if you want to make sure they play nice together try connecting them with the Atari S-Vid cable. You should get black and white image.

From what I've seen, crappy quality over RF is pretty much to be expected. I think it has something to do with the auto-tune feature on modern TVs. They just don't seem to be able to match up to the signal from the computer quite right.
