800XL RAM issues

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I finally got my SIO2PC set up, and everything is working great! However, i am having a couple problems with my 800XL. While most games i try to load work fine, i am having two issues: First, some games that work on my 800 don't work at all (like montezumas's revenge, dropzone) even though i know the disk images are 100% working; and some games that require 48k won't work at all (which does not make any sense because the 800XL is 64K?). For example, when trying to load up Ultima I, I get a message that says "ROM CARTRIDGE PRESENT OR MACHINE HAS LESS THAN 48K OR BAD MEMORY AT: A000" I tried to re-seating all the chips, and I am still getting the same message, so i am assuming i have some bad memory. Is there any other tests i can make, or is the RAM easy to replace?

Thanks in advance!

Are you disabling basic?

:ponder: Well, that fixed one problem. Thanks!

I still can't figure out why 30% of the games i try to load come up as garbled letters and symbols, and refuse to load though...any ideas?

Yeah, that was my issue when I started using my SIO2PC cable... holding down the ol' OPTION button solved everything

Perhaps they are old 400/800 only games which require a translator disk or 400/800 compatible OS to run on XL/XE systems.

Is it really 30% or is it just a bad coincidence?

I know a fellow who tested ONE harddisk after he upgraded his blackbox with a Parity chip. That ONE drive worked perfect, so he stated: this upgrade (parity) works with 100% of all harddisks.

When you try 3 games, and one of them does not work it is also 33.333% ... which is really a lot.

I'd say: first try more games, try other distributions of the same game.

You also could do the SELFTEST (type BYE at basic prompt and to the test).

I think you are having some slight issues, because you are not familiar yet with the atari nature...
