The Last Word 3.21's Rotten Easter Egg...

I always wanted to put an Easter Egg in The Last Word, but it wasn't until last night that I discovered I'd put one in by accident.

 

When deleting files on the disk menu - either individually or as tagged groups - answering "No" to the "Delete file? (Y/N)" prompt did not cancel file deletion. I discovered this to my cost when accidentally hitting CTRL+D in the disk menu. Pressing Escape still worked, however.

 

I've prepared a critical fix in the form of release 3.21a. While I was about it, I fixed a bug in the display routine, and implemented support for custom RAM banking tables (useful if you want to specify exactly which extended banks are used). You can read about the changes in LW321A.TXT on the distribution ATRs.

Strange:

 

I can't get it to run on Altirra v1.9.T34. It will not go past the end of the Progress Bar in the intro/loading-screen.

 

I have tried all machines/memory/video/disk settings I can think of... but to no avail... unless I am missing something here.

My fervent hope is that you are missing a very salient point! Cardiac problems beckon for the author...

Can you carefully explain the events which led up to the lock-up (starting at when you got up in the morning and had breakfast)?

...So here's the summary:

 

1. On my day-to-day Dell 620, I downloaded your copy by the time I reported this, and fired-up-with Altirra, and to this day it continues to crash.

 

2. Slightly after your post here, I downloaded on my home-theater setup (Dell Studio1440z/Nvidia HDMI/Bravia 52" running Win7-64), to install the .ATRs, and it DID WORK, BEAUTIFULLY.

 

Because of the above findings, as well as other strange anomalies I have seen between these two machines, I will (for now) keep LastWord (and its author) blame-exempt.

 

I will continue to investigate what in the world is wrong with that D620.

OK - I'm pleased to have been exonerated (for now).

 

BTW: I notice you have an interest in Ace80. Claus has a credit in the LW manual for the insight and inspiration he provided for the word processor's 80 column renderer.

I am having trouble getting the spell checker to work in 3.21a. I nerver had version 3.21 so I cannot say if it worked. My LW.SYS file contains :

path D9:>LASTWORD>LW;D9:LASTWORD>LW>SPELL

 

NOTE: - This is running under SDX 4.42 beta using the MyIDE + Transcend flash module. I have no trouble reading/writing data with this setup.

 

Last Word 3.21a lives in D9:>LASTWORD>LW>LW.EXE

The dictionary files all live in D9:>LASTWORD>LW>SPELL>*.DCT

 

When running the spell checker, no words are found. When I hit "A" to add it, the status bar flashes Error 150 several times (and the MyIDE LED flashes)
