youki #2 Posted May 3, 2011 Penguin Land, i love that game! I have it on Colecovision as i didn't have it on SG1000. But a Sega Master System version exists , that is even better with more colored graphics!
ColecoDan #3 Posted May 3, 2011 Not sure what controversy you are talking about. I know there are two releases an early cart release and a re-release by collectorvision. I do not know if there are any differences in the two releases or if they are exactly the same. I have the one from collectorvision. The game is pretty cool and definitely hard, I thought. I still haven't set aside enough time to get good at it but did play it long enough to know it was going to be giving me headaches for a while until I got faster at getting the egg to move so the darn thing wouldn't get eaten. Pixelboy #4 Posted May 3, 2011 Not sure what controversy you are talking about. Perhaps he's referring to the falling out between Steve Bégin and Daniel Bienvenu...? I know there are two releases an early cart release and a re-release by collectorvision. I do not know if there are any differences in the two releases or if they are exactly the same. The title screens are different. That's about it.

The title screens are different. That's about it. And the label is completely different. The original release has a hand drawn label design by, and correct me if I'm wrong, Daniel Bienvenu. The CollectorVision release has a computer generated label which is very sharp as well.
newcoleco #6 Posted May 4, 2011 (edited) As far as I know, there is no controversy regarding Penguin Land. I can tell you the story. The first release of ColecoVision Penguin Land, I've proposed my help to make the cartridges and I've done the label to accelerate the release... drawing by hand and coloring by computer. After awhile, Steve Bégin leaved the active homebrew scene for personal reasons, puting aside work in progress projects including Mr.Do Wild Ride and his original game Wizard Siege. A year later (or so), I've got requests from at least 2 differents persons to contact Steve Bégin about Penguin Land. All I was able to gave them at this point was an email address and my wishes of good luck. One of these person was J-F Dupuis, aka CollectorVision. J-F Dupuis convinced Steve Bégin to work back on Penguin Land, in order to at least mention CollectorVision for a re-release. And so, a complete redesign of the label, and of course a professional looking box, was done for the re-release. So, my contribution to the project was offering my help to publish it in cartridges with my own label design, and later gave the email information needed for CollectorVision to finaly re-release the game... I'm glad that this game is available again. So, my role was more than nothing, surprised? I suppose some people may say that I'm stealing credits, others may even feel uncomfortable to even mention my name while talking about CV Penguin Land. I personaly don't regret my efforts to help back then Steve Bégin and then later J-F Dupuis... well, I guess you may call it a controversy if you want. Actually, Daniel, not to stir any controversy here, but you *are* stealing credit, namely from me. While you did play a role in the events that led to the re-release, I believe it was my vectorized Penguin Land box art (which I first used for my own private custom Penguin Land box) that started it all. When I gave a free copy of my custom box to Steve, he was very impressed with it, so much that when J-F came along and offered to re-release the game, Steve was more than willing to collaborate when he learned that I was going to supply my Penguin Land box art to J-F for the CollectorVision box, manual and cart label (which you can see above). Back when I vectorized that SG-1000 box art (which took roughly 50 hours) I really didn't think it would go beyond my own custom box. I'm happy to see it went much further than that! I read something about un-authorization somewhere. This has been answered good enough above, thank you guys! Edited May 4, 2011 by Rik
retroillucid #10 Posted May 4, 2011 (edited) Not sure what controversy you are talking about. As far as I know, there's no controversy Maybe that's about the fact that Penguin Land did get re-released? BTW: Both release look great in my opinion Edited May 4, 2011 by retroillucid

I knew it... someone has to say that I'm stealing credits. My suggestion : read again what I've written, please. Luc, you say it's your box art that convinced Steve Bégin and I'm sure it's the case. You have talent, no doubt about it. And I've never said that I've convinced Steve Bégin to let you guys re-release Penguin Land. So why you said that I'm stealing credits? All I've written is from my perspective, mostly about my various roles : publishing the first cartridges and helping you guys to contact Steve Bégin in order to deal with him. Now, I wonder if my help was really appreciate to its right value. I admit that I should have mentionned your name Luc in my story; you are one of the "at least 2 persons" who asked me to contact Steve Bégin and, like for J-F Dupuis, I gave you the contact information and my "good luck" wishes. What happenned after, you know it better than me considering that I've no access to your mailbox. Edited May 4, 2011 by newcoleco

It's just that after I spent 50 hours vectorizing that box art, you can understand that I prefer that all the facts of this story be told. I admit that saying that you were "stealing credits" was a little harsh, but I was just repeating your own words, not really making a criticism.
