Recommended Posts

Hello friends. It's possible to access a linux box, via serial port using an atari ste?. if yes, what programs would i need on the atari, and how to configure the server on the linux box?.

Thanks in advance!!!

Yes and I think most people would use a Terminal Emulator cartridge like the Atari VT100, or emulation software. There definitely are people doing stuff with Linux in this way, but using the ST as a dumb terminal to control a Linux box.

Hi....here are two more for you.....

If you have Windows....

http://www.jammingsignal.com/files/ (Telnet BBS Server, very easy to use, menu driven)

http://www.jbrain.com/pub/xplatform/serial/ (TCPSER, a bit harder to use, works in dos window)

For linux

http://www.jbrain.com/pub/linux/serial/ (TCPSER)

I've used both of the Windows ones, and both work fine. If you only plan on calling out, and are using Windows, I'd try the telnetBBS server.

I have to mention that I dont have an STE, just an ST, but I don't think the serial ports are different. I could be wrong.....

I also use an ansi Terminal program on the ST, not a VT emulator....

Look for TAZ, works well, can't use the address book for telnet. Newsie looks interesting, haven't tried that one though....

Thanks all for the info. The bbs server looks interesting and i will have a go this evening and try to get it working. Also i have taz as i saw not too long ago that was a complete and good looking terminal solution.

Will tell you the results and thanks in advance!!!

I forgot to ask, that, apart from having telnet bbs program running on windows side, do i need a tcp/ip stack on the Atari side, or a terminal program is enough?

Terminal program is enough, the Linux as a server will handle everything else. I used tio do this regularly using a 520 ST, crossover cable and the terminal cart. Worked great with a Xenix box.

Thanks guys for the help. Finally i got it working using the BBS Telnet server software and taz on the Atari side for terminal. Works like a charm!!!.

Got a shiver running through the spine when i saw the CONNECT, and the the ascii chars!!!. What memories!.

The only prob i see, is that i need to find a terminal program that allow me to input more digits in the dialing numbers, as some servers have different ports than 23, and taz won't let me fill it, and had to put it through the bbs server phonebook.

When i repair my linux box, will make a try as well, for getting linux stuff done via the Atari.

Thanks!!!

Does the null modem require RTS RST etc support in the serial cable, OR can a "3 wire" serial cable work?

3wire is something you get with MOST USB-to-serial adapters... Just TX, RX, and GND. Most PCs now lack true serial ports.
