C-Rex2000 #1 Posted May 8, 2011 Hi, I was wondering if anyone could point me to a good and easily available modem to use with an ST? Are the ones designed for the 8bit computers compatable? THANX, CZ
Thorsten Günther #2 Posted May 8, 2011 Many used the ZyXEL U-1496E(plus) back in the days (the ST copes with industry standard modems easily and doesn't need an Atari modem). The problem is that without upgrading the serial port (e.g. with one of Harun Scheutzow's projects RSVE or ST_ESCC or the commercial RSFI upgrade, anything above the ZyXELs speed will be useless anyway. Space Centurion #4 Posted May 21, 2011 Hi, if you don't mind me adding a few thoughts.....have you tried using for lack of better words a "modem emulator" so that the ST can bounce through the internet and hit another computer or bbs using similar software? It's called telnet / telbbs, and this way you don't tie up a phone line, or have to pay long distance. There are a few ST BBS's out there on the telebbs system, many DOS based ones too. Of course, this will be totally useless if you actually need to call another ST by land line..... Anyways, all you need is a PC with a serial port, and a NULL modem cable. There are two good programs out there, both free... http://www.jammingsignal.com/files/ http://www.jbrain.com/pub/xplatform/serial/ The first one, called telnet BBS server is windows based, works well, and easy to use. The second, TCPSER, works under a DOS window, and is a bit harder to setup. It is available for Linux too. I've used both, and for basic outgoing calls, the first one will be more than enough. And yes, I use this with my 1040ST, along with my Commodore 64 and 128. If I ever get an Atari 850 interface, then my Atari 8-bit can see the world too... :-) Just an idea.....if you already knew this, then hopefully someone else might get bitten by the "bug" and try it out. Have fun.
