The Official "Thrift finds" Thread

I'm writing on behalf of SomeGuy.

Last week I bundled a 4-switch Woody with two joysticks and 18 common games for sale at the thrift store I volunteer at. Nothing that would scream "gotta have it!" to a collector, but still a very nice set for someone who didn't already own a 2600. I printed out an info sheet with price, then gave it to them to display behind the register. Some time during the week they lost the info sheet, and they ended up selling it for a little over half my original price.

So, some guy out there is very happy right now. My only hope it ended up in the hands of a player and not a reseller. :)

Went to a Craigslist yard sale today that advertised video games, and came away with:

- six Genesis games, all CIB, including Starflight with map (!) - $21

- complete US Microvision collection, including working system and one or two loose doubles; everything CIB except the system itself - $75

I actually wrote to the seller beforehand to confirm that he was enforcing his "no early birds" policy. He confirmed it, but noted that he'd had people coming by his house two days before the sale (!!). I got there 20 minutes early and, sure enough, there were three guys already there, waiting for them to bring the video game stuff out. One of them had gotten there at 7:00 a.m., two hours before the posted starting time.

The other guys seemed basically reasonable and respectful, but this guy's behavior was pretty ridiculous. He seemed personable enough beforehand, but once the games were out, he was darting in front of everyone, grabbing everything he could get his hands on, and pretty much acting like Gollum. I think he even claimed that he expected to have first dibs since he'd been waiting the longest (to which I replied "This isn't a deli"). He cherrypicked the Master System games, grabbing ALF, King's Quest, and a couple other titles I might like to have had (though I already have ALF), but I was mainly there for the Genesis and Microvision anyway.

I think he pissed everyone off (including me), and I believe he wanted to buy the seller out completely, but I think the seller preferred to deal with the rest of us first; maybe this guy's antics put him off too, or maybe he just thought he'd get a better price that way -- who knows. I commiserated with the guy's wife before I left, as I think she was pretty flabbergasted by the feeding frenzy. At least the Gollum guy seemed like a collector rather than a reseller, but still, it was pretty distasteful.

Either way, I got what I came for, so I'm content. The other Genesis games are nothing special (though I got Hit the Ice, which I believe is fairly rare), but the Microvision deal is a pretty good one, no? I thought it was one game shy of a complete US collection, but I think the one that's not there is either a variant or a European exclusive.

This shit happens all the time here in the Seattle area. Some have gone as far as blocking tables and laying claim saying they had first dibs blah blah. I just say first dibs is what you have in your hand knuckle head and move on by and pick stuff up. There was incident were a little kid probably about 5-7 had a few games in his hands (nothing really worth anything) and some fat ass reseller took them right out of the kids hands. Funny part the kid was a neighbor to the seller and he had saved this games for him (already gave them to him) and escorted him off the property.

I don't understand the whole RETRO GOLD! I mean as a collector I want what I want but I am not going to be an ass over it or take it from peoples hands. Glad I am almost done with my sets :)

Yeah, between scarcity, greed, and Gollumism, it's getting grimmer and grimmer out there. Still, I'd never seen any behavior quite this egregious, and I can only hope that my impression was correct and the guy is a collector (if he's a reseller, I wish I'd been more aggressive with him).

I often don't bother with yard sales that specifically advertise video games -- I'd rather take my chances at big flea markets and unadvertised sales -- but in this case I thought it was a good bet that no one else would jump on the Microvision, and that I could grab what I needed on the Sega front. Funny thing is, I'd just been playing around with two of the games I bought on my flashcart -- Mighty Max and Hit the Ice -- so the timing was perfect, and I beat them both the next day! :)

Odyssey 2 Ebay lot

I got this lot of Odyssey 2 games off of Ebay a couple weeks ago for $21.75 shipped. When the package arrived it had $9.95 postage due which I had to pay, but the seller refunded me $16 because of it, so I only really paid $15.65 for the lot. I still don't have an Odyssey 2, but Mike over at collectorscardsandgames is in the process of testing one (and a TI-99/4a) for me to purchase.

If you paid 21.75 + 9.95 - 16.00 then you paid 15.70 for the lot (not 15.65).

So this really begs the important question, which is more annoying, someone that corrects your math or the annoying guy who always corrects someone's grammar on a blog. You decide. :-D

Oh ... and K.C.'s Crazy Chase is a good one as is the original K.C. Munchkin!

Goddammit. I can't believe I got that wrong, even after using Google as a calculator. I guess I got too hasty when I was inputting my figures and performed one of those 'human errors' which are always making rockets explode.

Been to a retro fair today. It was mixed with eurocon 2013, so there where a lot of international collectors. Had a nice chat with members of the videopac forum, there was a q&a with dutch developers Boys without Brains who developed hawkeye for the c64, there was a nice 8 bit music show. I also chatted with he guy who developed c64anabolt and superbreadbox for the c64.

Also tried mage3 for the videopac and wildforce for ps3 both still in development by revival studios.

I also picked up some nice stuff.

Got sea rescue for videopac and sneak'n peak for free.

So I'm going to be doing something different this time.Instead of posting what I've gotten recently, I'm going to wait until the end of the year to post what I have amassed so you can see everything in one post(and to go out with a Bang!).Now It's not going to be anything mind blowing(as I am 16 with no job and get my spending money from good grades) but It will be some good stuff no doubt. So far I have picked up over 64 games (over 8 consoles) and 6 consoles/handhelds since my last post some months ago and It's still growing.Stay tuned for my end of the year post.

Haven't been around much the past year or two, between and certain games (like Minecraft), and a job that pays well doing the software for this and its soon-to-be-released version with dimming support.

I went to Bussey's flea market today (unplanned) and found a guy selling lots of video games. He had a buttload of Super Famicom games, and must have had them wasting space for a few weeks because he quickly offered to sell them to me for $3 each, if I bought ALL of them, including the "pick of the litter" ones he had been wanting a higher price for. That turned out to be 79 games, with very few dupes (so far I've just seen two Sim City), but most of them are unique, and I had very few SF games already (I just need to find out where my boxed ones went), so most of them I didn't already have. It's a total random mix of RPG, platformer, sports, racing, etc. Since $3 is roughly my "I'll buy it if I don't already have it" price, I was cool with that.

There were even two "SF-Memory" flash cartridges in there. I'll have to set up a SNES to see what's on them.

Then I saw the Vectrex. It had display problems (horizontal deflection pegged to the right... anyone know real quick what that means and how easy it is to fix?), but the controller looks good. He really wanted too much for it, but we agreed on $310 with the SF games (which was almost all the cash I had in my pocket), so $73 for the Vectrex.
