The Official "Thrift finds" Thread

So here is a fun story. I stopped at few thrift stores on my way home and came up dry. Pulling into my garage I could see my neighbor across the alley was tossing a gas powered weed wacker. Im thinking Im good at fixing that kind of stuff so I figure ill go to grab it and give it a shot. I peek in his garage and ask if he is tossing it. He laughs and says "no I just set it there while I stepped in here to get gas." It is then I see a box by the trash with an NES zapper on top. I say "what about that stuff?" He says "go ahead it's your's." So I grab it and run home like a little kid. There was a bunch of junk but the pic shows what was worth keeping. I went back and asked if he was getting rid of anything else like that. He tells me that the box was given to him by another neighbor because it had some stuff he wanted, but he would ask that neighbor for me. The whole scenario was very odd, including my girlfriend yelling at me for inspecting the nieghbors garbage.

There was nothing super great in here mostly just random stuff, but finding a deal is rough lately so this got me really excited

Did you ever buy a Game system that when you open it up you find out it has a sweet game left inside? Well this is kinda like that. So here is one of my more interesting thrift store finds. I have been looking out for a VHS player for a while, I have been holding out for what seemed like a good one. Finaly found it so I brought it home plugged it in, and it started right up... Started right up playing the porno that was left inside... Soooo yea today I bought porn from Goodwill.

Haven't had a "thrift find" in a while. Answered a CL ad for a free jacked up telegames light sixer but by the time I got there a previous caller had picked it up. The guy offered me this as a consolation prize:

He was really cool and into vinyl so we chatted for a bit. Then when I was leaving he came out and gave me this to:

Not sure what I'm going to do with them but pretty cool none the less! Haven't tested the Pong yet but the computer works. Haven't figured out how to test the printer or tape player yet.

That gives a whole new meaning to "Be kind. Re-wind."

Reminds me of Chris Farley (late Phil Hartman in it too) in SNL's Clarence Thomas skit. Soft-core is the way to go.

...yeah it's a slow year for retro collectors.

  • 2 weeks later...

Found a pink Nintendo DS Lite for $10, included a car charger a few carrying cases and MarioKart DS. Also a few other family games (for sale if you want them). Works great.

ebay has been kind to me recently, got a boxed 130XE for $45 and a boxed 1050 for $24.50. The 1050 also has a few game disks like Dragonriders of Pern and Tail of Beta Lyrae. Hope it works!

Today:

Orange was 1/2 off color this week so I paid only 49 cents for something that at one time was around $15 new. And it is still sealed.

Nice find. I don't find them floppies all too often but I always get them when I see them. I like finding the used ones cuz you never know what your gona get.

Somewhat on topic. I had an interesting conversation with a flea marketer recently. He said he passes on anything pre-Nintendo because there is no market for Atari, Intelli, Coleco, etc. A lot of "flippers" believe / see this. What happens to the stuff? I heard some trash them :( .

This is good and bad for us 45+ year-olds looking for that nostalgia. The low demand keeps the prices down (compared to NES carts -- jeez!!!), but I think a lot are getting tossed. Really thinking of just eBaying to fill in the missing holes of my 2600 collection.

Didn't buy but it's so frickin' rare to see sealed 2600 games outside of eBay. Aside from the sealed Pac Man I got a few months back, this 2 are the only sealed 2600 games I've seen in the wild this decade.

Got these today, the NES games were from a goodwill that wants $5 dollars each for all games but I barely have anything NES so I said might as well. There were two other boxed NES games as well but they were sports as well and in worse condition/not complete.

Well dang. Maybe I'd better start getting my hands on some of the stuff I'm missing, before it's too late.

You need to get word out to as MANY flippers in your area as you can. Give that flea market guy a list of what you want & put your number on top of it. If they know there's a buyer, they'll start looking when someone brings in the old stuff.
