The Official "Thrift finds" Thread

Recommended Posts

Man, it's always the people who already OWN Chrono Trigger that keep finding cheap copies of it. I haven't seen a loose copy of it out in the wild for under $40, ever...i suspect i shall never play this game. :)

Found a 2600 Heavy Sixer in a thift store a few days ago for $7 in pretty decent working condition.. It needed a good cleaning (lots of dust on it), but that's about it. Before that the only Atari console I found in a thrift store was a light sixer, (complete with box that matches the serial number) and some common carts, for $5. That was a few years back.. Also found a like-new never used Reconditioned ColecoVision in box around that time, probably around the same price.

I had pretty much given up on finding a Heavy Sixer in anything but an "antique" store (where they'd want $30 and up for it), then this one showed up at my local Savers, and according to the tag, it had only been out since the day before. There were a bunch of loose common carts that hit the shelves at the same time (someone must've been spring cleaning). I grabbed four I didn't have. Today I went in and all the other carts were gone, but this time the joysticks were for sale, so I got a few that were in pretty good shape.

I got a Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Tiger handheld today in a church rummage sale. I paid $4 total for a big box of stuff including that, some records, and the following books, which i feel are pretty cool for collectors of odd books such as myself:

th_ChurchBooks.jpg

"Left Behind" by Tim LaHaye: I bought the book and two VHS tapes about this in one week, all based on a Simpsons reference. I hope it's worth it. :D

"Satan" by R.I. Humberd

"How to Prepare for Armageddon"

"The History of the Devil and the Idea of Evil" by Paul Carus. Features over 350 illustrations of the Devil from around the world. Effing sweet. :)

"Possession and Exorcism" by Traugott K. Oesterreich

"The Story of Christianity in Japan" by Otis Cary: This copy of the book, dating from 1909, has been in the Library at Yale University, a couple of Theological Seminaries, and a local Baptist Church.

I passed on a multivolume set of "The History of the Christian Church" books dating from the mid 1800's, because they were in pretty bad disrepair and i try to limit the amount of fifty pound purchases i make in one day. :D Church sales always have the best books...

Game X Change in Norman, OK:

Jr. Pac-Man

Spacechase (un monogrammed)

Superman (Atari pic, bad end label)

Taz

Gyruss

Skate Boardin'

and the cream of the crop...

River Raid II

Ah! Your Game X Change has better prices than the one in the Lafayette area here! Last time I went, their 2600 games (along with just about all other stuff that is pre-NES) were 3 for $5. Oddly enough, Game X Change is where I picked up my River Raid II as well.

Anyway, did my best to wheel and deal at my local used game shop when they called me to let me know that they got a Sega CDX and Power Base Converter - I had a couple extra SegaCD add-ons that I had recently repaired, so I brought those in. For 2 SegaCDs, a barebones Genesis, two power supplies, and about $47, I got them both. It was a fair deal, especially considering that I probably only spent about $12 total on the hardware I traded in. It wouldn't have come with the case if I hadn't been sitting behind the counter and noticed that the official CDX carrying case was in the trash! The manager didn't realize that it wasn't just some generic case or else he wouldn't have thrown it out.

So my Genesis family grows... all I need is the model 3 genesis, and my Genesis hardware should be complete...

NES

Legend of the Ghost Lion (complete): $10

I have NO idea how you keep managing finds like this, but it's certainly impressive. :D

I get a head's up on someone wanting to part with atari stuff. The local stores don't take atari or anything before NES. So they give me a call and I arrange to meet the person with the goods. Sometimes I get lucky on big lots at yardsale's too.

got a box of misc-nintendo stuff, it was in a good condition NES Action pack system box so that was worth the $5 i paid for it alone since, but got 2 controllers, gun, and 4 games, plus a bunch of manuals posters and stuff.

Also got a Sega Nomad in box for $5 with rechargable battery pack. All in all, i guess it was a decent weekend.

Today I found Chess 64 and Mario Kart 64 for $4 each. I already had a Mario Kart 64, so that goes onto the "sell when I have the time to ship crap" pile.

I also found a bunch of DB-9/DB-25 adapters in Radio Shack packaging for 50 cents each (half off 99 cents each). These presumably came from the RS store closings from a few months ago.

...and two Genesis 3-button controllers in apparently good condition for $2 each.

Not really a thrift find, but I recently scored three SUV-loads of Apple IIe/Macintosh, Commodore 64, Tandy, TRS-80, TI99/4A, and other stuff. I ran into a guy who was leaving the hobby, and just wanted to unload all his computer stuff -- I got a king's ransom.

Here's some of the stuff I got...

Two original iMac's, and one iMac DV.

At least eight slimline Mac LC/Performas.

Two IIe Platinums.

Four IIe Enhanced.

Two Apple IIc's.

Two Apple IIGS'es, including one boxed Woz Edition.

Two VTech Laser 128's.

Three BOXED TI99/4A's, and one loose.

At least two Commodore 64's (one boxed). And two boxed 1541 disk drives.

Many Tandy's.

IBM PS/1 console, complete with monitor.

Three TRS-80 consoles w/built-in monitor and dual 5.25" drives -- one Model III and two Model 4.

Many common Mac Performas/Centrises.

At least six Mac Classics, including one Color Classic.

Soem pretty rare stuff, too...

A whole crapload of ultra-rare Exatron Stringy Floppy drives and disks, for the TRS-80.

Two BOXED C64 Datasette attachments.

TI99/4A Peripheral Expansion System. (That thing is HEAVY!)

Also worth noting, were two BOXED Commodore 64 "Incredible Musical Keyboard" attachment/software kits. Haven't had time to go through it all.

I got all this for $300. This guy must have been desperate to unload it all, because he and his wife delivered it all to me for that price.

EDIT: Almost forgot to mention the Win'95 Monorail computer, and the Mac 128 (model M0001) in original canvas carrying case.

Wow! What a nice haul - if I had been drinking/eating something, I would have choked on it. *looks around for something to drink and choke on* Sounds like there's a lot of cool stuff in there!
