The Official "Thrift finds" Thread

Recommended Posts

I haven't contributed to this thread in a while. I had last Friday through yesterday off, and I went out hunting a few times for games and vinyl. I've been striking out for the past 6 months whenever I go looking, but this time I actually found some stuff! First, the records:

I have a thing for 80's Hair Metal records, and I picked up a few from a couple different shops. The Steely Dan record was a nice snag too, because it has a lot of their good stuff on there. And a Dr. Demento record? I had to buy that! The King Diamond one was not cheap, but it's a limited reproduction in blue 180 gram vinyl, and it's tough to find.

Yesterday, I hit up a junk shop that's in my rotation of stops, as well as a Salvation Army I never find anything at. Both stops were kind to me. I got all this:

The games are as follows:

Xbox:

Lord of the Rings: The Third Age

Star Wars: The Clone Wars/Tetris Worlds

Splinter Cell

Wii:

Astro Boy

PS2:

Spy Hunter

Sky Odyssey

Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows

Bully

PS1:

Rayman

Genesis:

Sonic Spinball

Atari 2600:

Shark Attack

(not pictured) Kangaroo w/instructions

SNES:

(not pictured) Extra Innings

Misc:

ST: DS9 Chief O'Brien CIB

ST:TNG Enterprise D Schematic Mug

Super Mario Super Show DVD

Sherwood RX-4109 Digital Receiver

I'm especially pumped about the receiver. My old early 80's Technics that I have for my turntable rig was giving me trouble, and the speakers were constantly cutting in and out. I've been on the hunt for a decent replacement, and this Sherwood was a $20 gamble from the Salvation Army. I am running a pair of 80's Mirage bookshelf speakers through it and an old-school Gemini DJQ1200 turntable, and it sounds AWESOME. The thing absolutely cranks!!!

I have a thing for 80's Hair Metal records,

I wish I could like this post twice. Once for "Balls to the Wall" and once for "Abigail". And then a third time, for "Abigail" again.

...did I mention that "karokoenig" is german for "King of Diamonds"?

Ha, that's awesome! I had the pleasure of seeing King Diamond last fall perform Abigail front to back on tour. A buddy of mine got free tickets through his work, and we sat about 5 rows back from the stage. Absolutely incredible. They were sold out of the album by that stop on the tour, so I was happy to snag this one for the collection.

And I don't consider Accept or King Diamond to be "Hair Metal" in any way. ;-) The others though... well, judge for yourselves:

That's a great Vinyl find for sure! I'd be super excited to find most of those also! I also have a thing for Hairbands and Ratt is one of my favorites. I'm a big Dr. Demento fan also. Thanks for sharing.

Found just one interesting thing today. A box for C64 Destroyer Escort, no disk but it had a few things inside: 2 catalogs from SSI, disk sleeves (one blank and one Origin), and JiffyDOS manual plus 1541 installation guide.

UFTAJxrr.jpg

wQSSwju.jpg

The above box with content was 29 cents (59 cents and was half off color) Also found a complete LEGO set 3403 for only 59 cents. Worth a lot more than that on other sites.

A moment of silence for my portables collection, please. One of the 3DS collections I pictured a few weeks back has been repossessed. Apparently it was donated to my thrift store by mistake, and the lady asked if she could have it back. She's incredibly lucky I hadn't sold anything yet and was actually going to hang on to most of it. Oh well, the point is to get all this stuff to good homes, and if that means sending it back to its original home, so be it... *sniff*

More recently I did get hold of these. I'll consider them a consolation prize!

No, that isn't an incredibly rare version of Rhythm Heaven featuring the cast of Peanuts. The previous owner decided the cover might be improved by a Linus sticker! I'll let y'all decide if it works.

I hope that lady at least repaid you the money you spent on it- considering the odds that not only would the store knew who had the unit, but be able to find them & have them still be in possession of everything & willing to give it back... it'd be the least she could do.

Fortunately for everyone involved, no money had exchanged hands yet. I volunteer for the store so I tend to hold onto things while getting them ready to sell or deciding to buy them myself. Like I said, the woman is quite lucky! My understanding is she is in fact a friend of one of the employees, so now us volunteers look a little better too.

She is indeed (and it's still nice of you to do the returning, you could have easily lied and claimed it sold already.)

I am curious though- is this one of the 'his and hers' sets? If so- which one did she want back? It'd be interesting if it turns out those two where utterly unrelated to each other.

It was the "his" set. No mention was made of the other one, so either they actually were coincidental donations, or maybe only one was supposed to be donated but then both were shipped off accidentally. I dunno, they don't pay me to ask questions. :)

24 XBOX 360 games and 2 XBOX games - $40

post-30739-0-86679100-1470535349_thumb.jpg

XBOX 360 with two rock candy controllers and FIFA 07 - $15

post-30739-0-78352600-1470535401_thumb.jpg

now the really sucky aspect about the xbox 360 is that it was working when I tested it at home. I reset everything and started playing fifa 07 when the disc stopped reading and the tray opened but would not close. Then the immortal RROD happened so I'm stuck with a $15 paperweight. Oh well, both controllers work great and they are in good condition. I will keep the power brick and the A/V cable but I will get rid of the 360. I'm sure someone here will want it for free.

N64 w/power supply, N64 w/power supply, Gamecube w/power supply, A/V, two controllers - $15

post-30739-0-09691300-1470535611_thumb.jpg

Dreamcast system with games - $20 and YES it works great. Seaman has the MIC as well.

fat PS2 - $5 works great

Nice hauls, y'all. I can't help but wonder if that PS1 set was sold because they couldn't get any of those games to work... :)

All I found today was a GC bongo controller for $5, and I passed on it. I already have two CIB and they take up a lot of space. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

LOL no. I asked them for games and they brought up the ps2 games. The guy was sure he had a dreamcast and would look for the missing disc from the 3 empty cases. he asked me if I was interested in a ps1 system. I told him not really lol. I gave him $40 for the ps2 games and when I came back all he found was the ps1 and he just gave it to me.

It was a little annoying as there was another person who was at the sale at the time I asked for games and he all of the sudden popped up and said "Oh I would be interested in those". Soon as the guy brought the ps2 games out he immediately asked what he wanted for them and the seller said $2 each. Before seller even set the games down the guy was ripping trough them.

It kind of irritated me as I asked for the games. So I had to swipe every non-sports game real quick to stop him from picking through them all. I told the guy I was going to offer on the entire lot so they wouldn't get stuck w/tons of games nobody wants. He says ok well I'm still getting these. Then he has the nerve to ask me if he can buy some of the ones I was able to pull aside before he swiped them.

Keeping my composure and not telling him to f-off I just ignored him. I know he took 5 games before I finally put practically every other game in my pile LOL. He got Metal gear, not sure what the other ones were but I already had that game anyhow and it didn't bother me much as it's only worth $2 anyhow. It was just how the ordeal went down that irritated me. I ended up just offering $40 to take what was there and he said ok.

If it was like nes or snes or something he would not have gotten anything as I would have immediately told him to back-off and if he wanted to offer more than me then by all means go for it. But being PS2, I let it slide.

The Hoberman Sphere is neat but I can't imagine why it would be $60. Is there are specific use for it?

Just something expensive. You can buy the small ones that stretch out like a foot in diameter for $15. It looks like Walmart sells this one new for $85 plus tax/shipping. So for me it would be $91.xx if I had it site to store free shipping.

As for it's use. It's just a neat science toy, that looks cool when you roll it and such. Plus the expanding and closing is cool to watch.

Hit up a local flea market real quick yesterday. Didn't really have time to go to every booth, so I went straight to a guy I've been buying from for years that always hooks me up. I've bought a Coleco Expansion Module #1 and a nice 4-port 5200 from him in the past for really good prices. He had a small case with some Famicom games in there, so I snagged these for $5 a piece:

6hcLr7S.jpg

Top to bottom:

Road Fighter

Aighina no Yogen: From the Legend of Balubalouk

Seicross

I picked up an A/V-modded Famicom a few months ago, so I've been slowly building a collection for it. It's not easy to find Famicom carts in the wild around here, so $5 a cart is a decent price, considering there's no shipping costs. I've been trying when possible to get games that I don't have on the NES or that weren't released in North America. The top two never came out here. Seicross did, but I don't have it for the NES.

Or games that were better in Japan, like Castlevania 3 and Contra =)

Yeah, those too. 8) Especially Castlevania 3. The soundtrack is so much better on the Japanese cart with the added sound chip.
