jadedrakerider #1 Posted May 22, 2011 Few. Glad that's out of my system. Anyway, I'm playing Streets of Rage on my brand new Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection! It's pretty fun, but man some of these enemies are CHEAP. Take the black dominatices, for instance. You punch them, and they kneel down and are invulnerable until they get up. Then they gang up on you! And don't get me started on the Round 4 Bosses. Those two jumping ladies are cheap, too! Rawr!
Koopa64 #2 Posted May 22, 2011 You mean *phew!*. Cheap enemies are a staple of beat em ups. Best to grab a friend and watch eachother's backs.
sheath #3 Posted May 22, 2011 (edited) Walking straight up to enemies and punching without turbo fire is the best way to take cheap shots before starting a combo. The best way to approach enemies is by walking down or up to them, never straight. Streets of Rage gives you all the gameplay in the world to deal with cheap shots. It's a rhythm that must be learned though. Jump kick, three hit combo who's left standing, grab opponent, knee twice and throw into other enemies as they get back up, or somersault (especially to avoid an attack) and suplex and begin again with the jump kick. It's like a beautiful little dance when you get it. Figuring this out with a modern controller might be *much* harder than it would on a genuine Genesis pad though. jadedrakerider #4 Posted May 22, 2011 Cheap enemies are a staple of beat em ups. Best to grab a friend and watch eachother's backs. That is definitely the way to go. I gotta find a buddy who's into classic games. Jump kick, three hit combo who's left standing, grab opponent, knee twice and throw into other enemies as they get back up, or somersault (especially to avoid an attack) and suplex and begin again with the jump kick. Thanks for the advice, I'll give it some practice. I'm using an XBox 360 controller and I have to say I quite like it for Streets of Rage. Even though the 360 controller is built for FPS games, I'm quite liking it for this title. It's a little more difficult for games like Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix or platformers. The D-Pad on the 360 is a joke.
Classic Pac #5 Posted May 22, 2011 Streets of Rage 1 has it problems, which were thankfully fixed when SOR 2 came out. I swear SOR 1 is 10 times harder than 2.
Koopa64 #6 Posted May 22, 2011 I wonder if SNK has any of their old NEO-GEO beat em ups on compilation packs yet. Most of them were terrible, but they had their qualities (especially if you like the first Final Fight). I think I heard something about a Sengoku collection perhaps. Sengoku 3 (in Japan, it's called Sengoku 2001) is the best beat em up on NG.
+thegoldenband #7 Posted May 23, 2011 Those two jumping ladies are cheap, too! I haven't played SOR much so I could be totally wrong about this, but I seem to remember reading that the trick to beating those ladies involves some sort of reverse attack, like the elbow smash in Double Dragon. Don't know if that helps, but...
Chuplayer #8 Posted May 23, 2011 Take the black dominatices, for instance. You punch them, and they kneel down and are invulnerable until they get up. IIRC, you're supposed to grapple them and throw and suplex them around. Grapple strikes may work, too.
Algus #9 Posted May 23, 2011 As much as I love the original SoR, the game just got phenomenally better in the sequel when the characters were given more moves. Jump kicks are pretty potent (well, weak, but hard to dodge) and grabs are great (though some enemies can counter grabs, especially bosses) though they are a bit harder to pull off than in SoR2 thanks to the smaller sprites. jadedrakerider #10 Posted May 25, 2011 As much as I love the original SoR, the game just got phenomenally better in the sequel ... Agreed. I'm really loving the SoR2! The character differentiation, and Blaze's outfit? Oh yeah. I'm there.
Tr3vor #11 Posted May 25, 2011 Streets of Rage was one of the only 3 games on the genesis that I liked, and strangely, my sister liked to play it with me too. That level 4 or whatever with the jumping ninja girl hoes is so flipping annoying. I liked the stage graphics though, on a boat.
