Has anyone used a 1.8" HDD with an A8 IDE Interface?

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of trying this one:

I checked at the Toshiba web site and found very little about it since it is (I think) obsolete by several years. I believe some of these can only be used by IPods, etc. but this one at least says "hand-held PC's". (Needs pin adapter.)

Cheap, and supposedly new, but thought I'd see if anyone has had any experience with these.

It looks like a PCMCIA card.. and the case doesnt look too rigid either. Id be really wary of that thing if there actually is a disc spinning inside it.. (evidently there is, at 4200rpm). I'd do some reading about that form factor disk and what kind of reliability people have experienced with it long term, before spending the cash. You can get CF cards that have several gigs of space on them, and they have a decent track record where reliability is concerned..

Also notice that it needs 3.3v to power it.. That means an additional regulator, unless you can find an "adaptor" thats got it onboard already.. Is it made to plug into a "CF" style slot?

Just my personal oppinion at "first glance".. Ive got no actual experience whatsoever to base it on..

My advice: stay away.

I realize it's cheap, but that cheapness will go away to get it working with the IDE interface. Unlike the 2.5" drives the interface targets, it's got a male interface. And the pins may be different. And as MG is mentioning, 1.8" drives take 3.3v, not 5v. So by the time you get an adapter for the pins, and something to step down the voltage so you don't kill the drive, suddenly you would have been better off with either a 2.5" drive or a CF with adapter.

1.8" drives (IDE ones anyway) are a bit scary. You usually think IDE drives have a standardized connector, but 1.8" drives have like 3-4 different ones. I suspect there is a reason the person on ebay does *not* show the interface like I've seen on other sites.

I don't know why you wouldnt just use a 2.5 drive... But that adaptor looks ok, not sure how you will secure it though...

And I assume that adaptor does the power conversion?

Thanks for the feedback, guys. And thanks for the link to the .pdf.

I should have included the "other piece of the puzzle."

Important detail. I'd still think you could get a refurb 2.5" drive for about the same price, and then you don't have to worry about another adapter in the chain. But maybe that's just me.

I'm assuming it does. The pic has a power converter looking chip that has "3.3" amongst its markings. That was my first thought too though :)
