Other sound chips used in the atari 8bit

Recommended Posts

I recently found out that someone was working on a way of hardwiring SID (the sound device from the c64) to working on an A8, i dunno how far they got with the project and whether they had any madefor sale

if something like the c64 sound device could be hardwired to working with the A8, what about other sound chips, like the AY/YM chip ftrom the st/amstrad or spectrum and i believe someone in the a8 forum is trying to re engineer an ancient pc soundchip (the gravisound) for use with the a8

After all, stereo/dual pokey (or gumby, to giving it it's original name) is getting a bit long in the tooth, time to experiment with other slightly modern sound chips, like amy/amie or quad pokey or something slightly 'non' atari

Various implementations of Covox already exist, but it's a software driven DAC system so is somewhat limited.

Candle's soundboard sounds very promising although price could be a factor.

YM - used in BBC as well. Countless times I've said it's inferior to Pokey. The only reason for having it IMO would be to draw on the large library of chiptunes that are available and could be readily converted to be able to run on A8.

But, on the other hand, with dual Pokeys you could run in 2 x 16-bit + 1 16-bit + 2 spare voice modes and fairly closely emulate a YM chip anyhow.

Has it been done? I don't know, part of the disincentive is the afformentioned inferiority of the chip.

SID - I believe it needs 12 V DC for the filters to work. Other than that it'd be a straightforward interface although it would be running on a different base clock.

Same would apply for YM, or most other chips for that matter, so corrections would need to be applied to any ported across chiptunes.

Whatever way you go, there's the problem that a user base doesn't exist. Dual Pokey is only just becoming more prevalent to the point where many new releases support it.

Anything in the future will also take much time to grab a foothold.
