HatefulGravey #1 Posted June 15, 2011 I have often wondered just how many games were release for each system, and I often get asked by friends. I know its hard to say for the 2600 because of the name changes and crap, but it can't be that hard for other systems. So, how many games for each system? Let us combine or knowledge. I'm talking official releases only if you have numbers for NTSC and PAL both would be interesting.

Not sure if you just mean Atari systems, but for the Intellivision there were 125 official releases.
+bennybingo #3 Posted June 16, 2011 This is a tricky one...it has been presented here before, never with what I would call an entirely conclusive answer. Here's the difficult parts: Do you include regional official releases (PAL) or just NTSC? Are independent, small companies considered when talking about "official releases"? Do you include re-releases and label variations? Do you include "club / promotion" based releases, even if very limited. etc, etc... I have tried to come to a consensus over the years with regards to the 2600 and if you ask 10 collectors, you are likely to get 10 different answers. I think it is all based on how you collect and what your personal preferences are. Here is one of the answers I could find here: http://www.atariage.com/forums/blog/279/entry-5704-how-many-atari-2600-games-are-there-answer-418/ I hope it helps.
HatefulGravey #4 Posted June 16, 2011 I know why there are all kinds of numbers for the 2600. That has been talked about a ton of times. I really don't understand why this question is always followed by more questions. I'll ask this one question as a pile of different and very specific questions and see how that goes. How many NES games were officially released into retail stores like Toys-R-Us and sold at retail price to anyone that walked in with the money and desire to buy them? How many SNES games were officially released into retail stores like Toys-R-Us and sold at retail price to anyone that walked in with the money and desire to buy them? How many Sega MasterSystem games were officially released into retail stores like Toys-R-Us and sold at retail price to anyone that walked in with the money and desire to buy them? How many Sega Genesis games were officially release into retail stores like Toys-R-Us and sold at retail price to anyone that walked in with the money and desire to buy them? I think you are getting the point at this point. I don't want to list every console here, but I think it would be nice to know how many games we are talking about here. EDIT: Oh, and I mentioned PAL and NTSC as different things in the first post because I knew someone would ask.
tz101 #5 Posted June 16, 2011 PSX has 2418, according to one source. I believe it because there are so many at thrifts and yard sales.
HatefulGravey #6 Posted June 16, 2011 The number I'm finding for NES is 791. As long as people have been collecting for these systems I simply can't believe no one has a list of every game for each system. There are people that seek to own every game for this system or that. How could they collect them all if they didn't know what they all were?
toptenmaterial #7 Posted June 16, 2011 (edited) Wikipedia is showing 691 for the original Game Boy, and 59 for the 7800 excluding homebrew, which it put at 14. Edited June 16, 2011 by toptenmaterial
Algus #8 Posted June 16, 2011 Wikipedia counts 799 but doesn't seem to differentiate between PAL and US titles. Is it even reasonable to count unlicensed NES titles? I guess so, because they exist and they were sold in retail stores but they aren't "official" games as far as Nintendo is concerned. I guess you said you weren't counting them so that discounts most of Tengen's games, American Video Entertainment's games, and so forth. You might find this page interesting. It claims 677 officially licensed games were released in the US and counts the US's total as 767 when unlicensed titles are included.
+bennybingo #9 Posted June 16, 2011 I really don't understand why this question is always followed by more questions. I'll ask this one question as a pile of different and very specific questions and see how that goes. To clarify...I was using the 2600 as a prime example, but this seems to be a common problem (and an answer I have sought many times over the past 30 years of collecting) across multiple platforms. I always get different answers, dependent on the variables of what you want to include or exclude. The 2600 just happens to be my personal favorite, so I thought I would add what I know. With the japanese imports, there are just so many, it is hard to get a true count. It also comes down to figuring out which were commercially released and which were not. I wish I had more input here, but it is truly a question that tends to yield to more questions than answers.
fiddlepaddle #10 Posted June 16, 2011 (edited) My best shot so far (includes unlicensed, but no home brews, hacks, prototypes, or any release that is virtually impossible to find in the wild. US only. Carts only... no tape games, no CD/DVD games.) I don't count Game Genie/Sharks or test carts. 2600 Sears versions count as separate games. I probably have a few games listed more than once due to naming confusion and I'm sure there are still games not in the list. 32X: 36 2600: 521 5200: 74 7800: 64 Astrocade: 43 Channel F: 26 Colecovision: 148 Game.com: 21 Game Boy Advance: 990 Game Boy/Color: TBD Genesis: 745 Game Gear: 241 Intellivision: 136 Jaguar: 69 Lynx: 73 Master System: 117 Nintendo 64: 295 Neo Geo Pocket: 31 NES 784 Odyssey 2: 51 SNES: 736 TurboGrafx: 94 Virtual Boy: 15 Vectrex: 31 Edit: P.S. I believe you likely have some duplicates due to multiple names for the same game, mostly due to licensing agreements expiring with sports leagues. ( ie. Major League Baseball became Big League Baseball).

Similarly for Baseball, Basketball, Football, Golf, Hockey, Bowling, and Skiing. "Big League Baseball" is listed separately. That leaves two more... is "World Series Major League Baseball" the same as "Baseball"? What about: "World Championship Baseball" same as...?

World Series and World Championship are the second and third baseball games, they are unique.
