Rex Dart #1 Posted June 16, 2011 (edited) So I've had this half-working Defender II cart for a while. It loads and is nearly playable, but the behavior's way off. I assume it's because it sat in a hot store window in central Texas for years. I was just curious if it'd be possible to have the cart rom dumped before I turn the plastic shell into a fridge magnet. Could that work, or would there likely be too many read errors? If it could be dumped somehow, would any emulator possibly run it? SlowCoder #2 Posted June 16, 2011 My question is, why would you want to ROM dump a bad cart? Unless it did something weird and interesting.
Wickeycolumbus #3 Posted June 16, 2011 (edited) Yeah, I don't quite understand... That ROM has been on the internet for ages. Edited June 16, 2011 by Wickeycolumbus
mtshark7 #4 Posted June 16, 2011 Just skip dumping the rom and make it into a nice magnet :-)
the.golden.ax #5 Posted June 16, 2011 My question is, why would you eat an Atari cart in the first place? But really, if you just want to fix it, a new rom chip can be put in there, no dump needed. AX

Rex Dart #8 Posted June 16, 2011 (edited) Magnet, repair it, whatever. What would it cost me to get a replacement chip? I would like to have a working copy but not if it'll cost more than a couple of bucks. It would be rad if I could send this @#$*er to somebody & they could dump it and ship it back with a new chip (I could make the swap)... Anyways, I'd still like to dump the rom because I do find the behavior interesting. If you care: the ship sits still until it's destroyed once, then you're in control of it. It moves slowly, the ground scrolls along with you (or is it considered stationary?) and the map of humanoids is all wonky. dwane413 #12 Posted June 24, 2011 I'm guessing that you might be able to dump it, but I don't know. The only way to know for sure it to try it or have someone try it for you. If you have a Harmony cartridge, here are instructions for using it to dump a cartridge: Harmony-based cart dumper
Schizophretard #13 Posted June 25, 2011 Dump it, have someone fix the messed up code, and then resurrect it back into your cart. It will prove to the world that Atari is immortal.

SlowCoder #15 Posted July 27, 2011 Month-old Bumpin' Can it be done? (Y/N) I suppose you'll only know if you try. If for some reason you've got unreadable bits on your cart, you could end up with corrupted or incomplete data.
HatefulGravey #16 Posted July 27, 2011 How does one dump a rom anyway? I assume there is a special set up for this?
Wickeycolumbus #17 Posted July 28, 2011 I'd be willing to dump it for you, but it's probably not worth the trouble of sending it back and forth.
