atari5200dude82 #1 Posted June 20, 2011 (edited) What version of these tank games do you like better. Atari Battlezone or Activision Robot tank. I like both games. They are both unique in there own way. You decide. Edited June 20, 2011 by atari5200dude82
lhfreak #2 Posted June 20, 2011 I always liked Robot Tank better. It just 'feels' like more action going on to me. I also love the weather changes.

tz101 #4 Posted June 20, 2011 I always thought Robot Tank was the better game, but have learned some appreciation for Battlezone over the last couple years. Not too bad a game either.

SlowCoder #6 Posted June 20, 2011 They're both good games, especially considering the capabilities of the platform. But I have to agree that Robot Tank was at least a little better.
Rex Dart #7 Posted June 20, 2011 I like both of them for their differences. I suppose I should look up some Robot Tank tips, but I never can survive very long in that, always get surprise-murdered.
zylon #8 Posted June 21, 2011 I prefer Battlezone over Robot Tank, but not by much. I like the more realistic dodging you have to do on Battlezone which plays more like driving a tank.
Algus #9 Posted June 21, 2011 I prefer Battlezone over Robot Tank, but not by much. I like the more realistic dodging you have to do on Battlezone which plays more like driving a tank. Agreed. Battlezone may be one of the best titles on the 2600. Then again, so is Robot Tank.
tremoloman2006 #10 Posted June 23, 2011 Both are great titles but I think Robot Tank is much more fun to play.

+bennybingo #12 Posted June 23, 2011 My preference is Robot tank. I just liked the pace of it. I do wish there was a vector version of battlezone for the 2600 or 7800...something more like the original. That would be pretty cool.
jetset #13 Posted June 23, 2011 I always have a special place in my heart for the original. Knockoffs always seem better, but I appreciate originals for what they are. My vote is for Battlezone.
Tinman #14 Posted June 23, 2011 I think Robot Tank has more "advanced" features. I love the weather and time-of-day changes, the moving radar sweep, and the on-screen text messages. But Battlezone has better enemy tank movement for sure. I love that the enemies have to turn slowly towards you before they can fire at you. On Robot Tank, the enemy tanks seem to just face one side direction or the other and can fire at you no matter which way they're facing. Both games are pretty fun and offer pretty cool graphics for the 2600.
jhd #15 Posted June 23, 2011 (edited) I don't have much to add to what has alreday been said -- but I certainly prefer Robot Tank. I really like how individual systems can be damaged (e.g. video, radar, movement) yet the tank can still function. I once finished a round "blind" with no functioning video or radar! Edited to add that I just realised that Battlezone was not re-released by Atari in a modern compilation, although most (all?) of their other vector games (i.e. Asteroids/Deluxe, Space Duel, Major Havok, and Tempest) were. tz101 #16 Posted June 23, 2011 Some bright programmer needs to do a rewrite of the VCS Battlezone game that allows dual joystick use for left-right turning, just like the arcade version. Hint, hint...
SlowCoder #17 Posted June 24, 2011 Some bright programmer needs to do a rewrite of the VCS Battlezone game that allows dual joystick use for left-right turning, just like the arcade version. Hint, hint... Let me know when you get done with that ... AWESOME! Probably would also need to put together some sort of stand to put the controllers in to keep them steady.
Rex Dart #18 Posted June 26, 2011 I just realised that Battlezone was not re-released by Atari in a modern compilation, although most (all?) of their other vector games (i.e. Asteroids/Deluxe, Space Duel, Major Havok, and Tempest) were. Are you saying there was some particular compilation that was missing Battlezone? It's on the Nintendo DS in Atari's Greatest Hits Volume 1. Some bright programmer needs to do a rewrite of the VCS Battlezone game that allows dual joystick use for left-right turning, just like the arcade version. Hint, hint... It's called Battlezone TC. rockman_x_2002 #19 Posted June 27, 2011 Battlezone is fine, but Robot Tank is so much more advanced. It feels like a sequel to Battlezone more than anything. Now what I'd like to have seen is a version of Robot Tank with the two-stick tank controls. That would have been amazing back in the day.

It can't think of many modern Atari compilations that don't have Battlezone. It's in Atari 80 in 1 on PC (and previous PC collections), Atari Greatest Hits iPad, Atari Anthology for Xbox and PS2, one of the DS Atari Greatest Hits collections, Atari Anniversiary Edition DC, and Atari Anniversary Edition Redux PSX. Some of these collections have the 2600 one, as well. Edited June 28, 2011 by BrianC
Emehr #21 Posted June 28, 2011 I like Robot Tank for its more complex game mechanics but I've always played Battlezone the most. I love the intensity as you're turning to get a tank in your sights and you can see that it's doing the same thing and it's all down to who gets there first. It's also cool seeing the enemy's bullets whiz by you as you narrowly escape their trajectory. Plus, Battlezone has a better death screen.
+Nathan Strum #22 Posted June 28, 2011 Robot Tank. However, I prefer the arcade version of Battlezone over either 2600 game.
