FPS for Atari 2600

Recommended Posts

Hey!

I was wondering if anyone has worked on a first person shooter for the atari 2600? I remember playing Quake for my TI-83 calculator and I think it would be neat playing a FPS on atari 2600.

I guess the game could be sorta hacked from Crypts of Chaos? :ponder:

The 2600 is better at vertical scrolling than it is at horizontal scrolling. Which is why Merlin's Walls requires the TV to be rotated 90 to play it. This would work well if you wanted a FPS set inside a buidling.

However the war FPS games I have seen have a lot of the action outside so you could do something like Battle Zone or Robot Tank but replace the tanks with enemy soldiers.

Also there is a thread about using the controller port for output, so you could connect two consoles for multiplayer games.

Technology/programmingwise, I think Robot Tank or BattleZone would qualify as FPS.

I haven't played the other titles that Inpaler or GroovyBee mentioned, but I agree with SlowCoder on RT/BZ. Awesome, fun, playable games that must have really pushed the limits of the console. The graphics are very pretty too. I would imagine that in their day they were revolutionary.

They are all great games but I'm looking for the 'behind the gun' fps type games. I never played merlin's walls so I dunno if that's a behind the gun type of game.

That is a good idea modifying battlezone to make a 'behind the gun' fps.

I think a Quake or Doom type game would be really neat on the Atari 2600.

FP yes, S no! :D

It has shooter elements, its kinds like hitscan, but it does require some strategy with the later skeletons requiring more shots
